³ And Pharisees came up to him and ^(A)tested him by asking, ^(B)“Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?”

² And Pharisees came up and in order ^(A)to test him asked, ^(B)“Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

⁶ This they said ^(A)to test him, ^(B)that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

⁵³ As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, ^54 (A)lying in wait for him, ^(B)to catch him in something he might say.

¹⁵ But, knowing ^(A)their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why ^(B)put me to the test? Bring me ^(C)a denarius^[a] and let me look at it.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

^13 (A)And they sent to him some of ^(B)the Pharisees and some of ^(C)the Herodians, to ^(D)trap him in his talk.

^35 (A)And one of them, ^(B)a lawyer, asked him a question ^(C)to test him.

¹⁶ And they sent ^(A)their disciples to him, along with ^(B)the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, ^(C)we know that you are true and teach ^(D)the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for ^(E)you are not swayed by appearances.^{[a] 17} Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay ^(F)taxes to ^(G)Caesar, or not?” ¹⁸ But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why ^(H)put me to the test, you hypocrites?
