4 Als zij van de markt komen, wassen zij zich eerst en gaan dan pas eten. Er zijn veel van die gewoonten waaraan zij nog altijd vasthouden. Zo spoelen zij ook bekers, potten en pannen af voordat zij die gebruiken. 5 De Farizeeën en bijbelgeleerden vroegen aan Jezus: ‘Waarom trekken uw leerlingen zich niets aan van de traditie? Zij hebben voor het eten niet eens hun handen gewassen.’ 6 Hij antwoordde: ‘Huichelaars! De profeet Jesaja had gelijk toen hij zei: “Deze mensen eren God met de mond, maar in hun hart moeten zij niets van Hem hebben.

4 And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.
5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches.
5 (A)Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”
6 He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you (B)hypocrites, as it is written:
(C)‘This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
