14 Tani dy ditë më vonë ishte Pashka dhe festa e të Ndormëve; dhe krerët e priftërinjve dhe skribët kërkonin mënyrën se si ta kapnin Jezusin me mashtrim dhe ta vrisnin.
2 Por thonin: “Jo gjatë festës, që të mos ndodhë ndonjë trazirë nga populli.”
3 Tani ai ishte në Betania, në shtëpinë e Simonit lebroz, dhe ndërsa ishte në tryezë, hyri një grua me një enë alabastri me vaj të parfumuar me nard të vërtetë, shumë të kushtueshëm; ajo e theu enën prej alabastri dhe ia derdhi vajin mbi krye.
4 Disa u indinjuan midis tyre dhe thanë: “Përse bëhet gjithë ky shpenzim i kotë i vajit?
5 Sepse ky vaj mund të shitej për më shumë se treqind denarë dhe këto t’u jepeshin të varfërve.” Dhe ishin të indinjuar ndaj asaj.
6 Por Jezusi tha: “Lëreni të qetë; pse e shqetësoni? Ajo kreu një vepër të mirë ndaj meje.
7 Sepse të varfërit do t’i keni gjithmonë me ju; dhe, kur të doni, mund t’u bëni mirë; por mua nuk do të më keni gjithmonë.
8 Ajo bëri atë që mundi; vajosi para kohe trupin tim për varrim.
9 Por po ju them në të vërtetë se në gjithë botën, kudo që do të predikohet ky ungjill, do të tregojnë edhe atë që ajo bëri, në përkujtim të saj.”
10 Atëherë Juda Iskarioti, një nga të dymbëdhjetët, shkoi te krerët e priftërinjve, që t’ua dorëzonte Jezusin.
11 Dhe ata, kur e dëgjuan, u gëzuan dhe i premtuan se do t’i jepnin para. Kështu ai kërkonte rastin e përshtatshëm për ta tradhtuar.
12 Tani në ditën e parë të festës së të Ndormëve, kur flijohej Pashka, dishepujt e vet i thanë: “Ku don të shkojmë dhe të përgatisim për ta ngrënë Pashkën?.”
13 Atëherë ai dërgoi dy nga dishepujt e vet duke u thënë: “Shkoni në qytet dhe atje do të takoni një njeri, që bart një kanë plot me ujë; ndiqeni atë.
14 Dhe atje ku ai do të hyjë, i thoni të zotit të shtëpisë: "Mësuesi pyet: Ku është dhoma ku mund të ha Pashkën me dishepujt e mi?".
15 Atëherë ai do t’ju tregojë lart një sallë të madhe të mobiluar dhe gati; aty përgatitni për ne.”
16 Dishepujt e tij shkuan, arritën në qytet dhe gjetën ashtu siç ai u kishte thënë; dhe përgatitën Pashkën.
17 Kur u bë darkë, ai erdhi me të dymbëdhjetët.
18 Dhe kur po rrinin në tryezë dhe po hanin, Jezusi tha: “Ju them në të vërtetë se njëri prej jush, që po ha me mua, do të më tradhtojë.”
19 Atëherë ata filluan të trishtohen dhe t’i thoshin njëri pas tjetrit: “Mos jam unë?.” Dhe një tjetër tha: “Mos jam unë?.”
20 Dhe ai, duke u përgjigjur, u tha atyre: “Éshtë një nga të dymbëdhjetët që po ngjyen me mua në çanak.
21 Po, Biri i njeriut po shkon ashtu siç është shkruar për të; por mjerë ai njeri me anë të cilit tradhtohet Biri i njeriut. Do të ishte më mirë për të, që ai njeri të mos kishte lindur kurrë!.”
22 Dhe, ndërsa ata po hanin, Jezusi mori buk, e bekoi, e theu dhe ua dha atyre duke thënë: “Merrni, hani; ky është trupi im.”
23 Pastaj mori kupën, e falënderoi, ua dha atyre dhe të gjithë pinë prej saj.
24 Atëherë u tha: “Ky është gjaku im, gjaku i besëlidhjes së re, që derdhet për shumë veta.
25 Në të vërtetë unë po ju them se nuk do të pi më prej frytit të hardhisë deri në atë ditë kur do ta pi të ri në mbretërinë e Perëndisë.”
26 Dhe, mbasi kënduan një himn, dolën dhe u drejtuan nga mali i Ullinjve.
27 Dhe Jezusi u tha atyre: Ju të gjithë do të skandalizoheni me mua sonte, sepse është shkruar: "Do ta godas Bariun dhe delet do të shpërndahen".
28 Por, mbasi të ringjallem, unë do t’ju pararend në Galile.”
29 Dhe Pjetri i tha: “Edhe sikur të gjithë të tjerët të skandalizohen me ty, unë nuk do të skandalizohem.”
30 Dhe Jezusi i tha: “Unë po të them në të vërtetë se sot, pikërisht në këtë natë, para se gjeli të këndojë dy herë, ti do të më mohosh tri herë.”
31 Por ai, duke ngulur këmbë më tepër, thoshte: “Edhe sikur të më duhet të vdes me ty, nuk do të të mohoj kurrë.” Të njëjtën gjë thoshnin edhe gjithë të tjerët.
32 Pastaj ata arritën në një vend që quhej Gjetsemani; dhe ai u tha dishepujve të vet: “Uluni këtu, deri sa unë të jem lutur.”
33 Mori, pra, me vete Pjetrin, Jakobin dhe Gjonin, dhe filloi ta zërë frika dhe ankthi;
34 dhe u tha atyre: “Shpirti im është thellësisht i trishtuar, deri në vdekje; qëndroni këtu dhe rrini zgjuar.”
35 Dhe, si shkoi pak përpara, ra përmbys përtokë dhe lutej që, po të ishte e mundur, të largohej prej tij ajo orë.
36 Dhe tha: “Abba, Atë, çdo gjë për ty është e mundur; largoje prej meje këtë kupë! Por jo atë që dua unë, por atë që do ti!.”
37 Pastaj u kthye mbrapa, i gjeti dishepujt duke fjetur dhe i tha Pjetrit: “Simon, po fle? S’ke qenë i zoti të rrish zgjuar një orë të vetme?
38 Rrini zgjuar dhe lutuni që të mos hyni në tundim; sigurisht fryma është e gatshme, por mishi është i dobët.”
39 U largua përsëri dhe u lut duke thënë të njëjtat fjalë.
40 Kur u kthye, i gjeti përsëri në gjumë dishepujt, sepse sytë e tyre ishin rënduar dhe ata nuk dinin çfarë t’i përgjigjeshin.
41 Së fundi, kthehet për të tretën herë dhe u thotë atyre: “Ende po flini dhe pushoni? Mjaft! Erdhi ora. Ja, Biri i njeriut po dorëzohet në duart e mëkatarëve.
42 Çohuni, të shkojmë; ja, ai që po më tradhton është afër!.”
43 Dhe në atë çast, ndërsa ai ende po fliste, erdhi Juda, një nga të dymbëdhjetët, dhe me të një turmë e madhe me shpata e shkopinj, e dërguar nga krerët e priftërinjve, nga skribët dhe nga pleqtë.
44 Dhe ai që po e tradhtonte u kishte dhënë atyre një shenjë: “Kë do të puth, ai është. Kapeni dhe çojeni me shoqërim të sigurt.”
45 Dhe si arriti, u afrua menjëherë tek ai dhe tha: “Rabbi, Rabbi!”; dhe e puthi përzemërsisht!
46 Atëherë ata vunë dorë mbi të dhe e arrestuan.
47 Dhe një nga të pranishmit nxori shpatën, i ra shërbëtorit të kryepriftit dhe ia preu veshin.
48 Atëherë Jezusi, duke iu përgjigjur, i tha: “Paskeni ardhur me shpata e me shkopinj që të më kapni sikurse të isha një cub?
49 E pra, përditë isha midis jush në tempull duke i mësuar njerëzit dhe ju nuk më kapët; por kjo po ndodh që të përmbushen Shkrimet!.”
50 Atëherë dishepujt e lanë dhe ikën të gjithë.
51 Dhe një farë djaloshi, që ishte i mbështjellur me një çarçaf mbi trupin e zhveshur, po e ndiqte, por ata e kapën.
52 Por ai e lëshoi çarçafin dhe iku lakuriq nga duart e tyre.
53 Atëherë ata e çuan Jezusin te kryeprifti, ku u mblodhën të gjithë krerët e priftërinjve, pleqtë dhe skribët.
54 Dhe Pjetri e ndoqi nga larg deri brenda në pallatin e kryepriftit dhe u ul atje bashkë me rojat dhe ngrohej afër zjarrit.
55 Dhe krerët e priftërinjve dhe gjithë sinedrit kërkonin dëshmi kundër Jezusit për ta vrarë, por nuk po gjenin.
56 Shumë veta në fakt jepnin dëshmi të rreme kundër tij; por dëshmitë e tyre nuk përkonin.
57 Atëherë disa u ngritën dhe dëshmuan rrejshëm kundër tij duke thënë:
58 “Ne e kemi dëgjuar se ka thënë: "Unë do ta shkatërroj këtë tempull të bërë me duar, dhe brenda tri ditësh do të ndërtoj një tjetër që nuk është bërë me duar".”
59 Por as mbi këtë dëshmia e tyre nuk përkonte.
60 Atëherë kryeprifti u ngrit në mes të kuvendit dhe e pyeti Jezusin duke thënë: “Nuk përgjigjesh fare? Çfarë po dëshmojnë këta kundër teje?.”
61 Por ai heshti dhe nuk u përgjegj fare. Përsëri kryeprifti e pyeti dhe i tha: “A je ti Krishti, Biri i të Bekuarit?.”
62 Dhe Jezusi tha: “Unë jam. Dhe ju do ta shihni Birin e njeriut të ulur në të djathtën e Pushtetit dhe duke ardhur me retë e qiellit.”
63 Atëherë kryeprifti, duke i shqyer rrobat, tha: “Ç’nevojë kemi më për dëshmitarë?
64 Ju e dëgjuat blasfeminë, ç’ju duket?.” Dhe të gjithë gjykuan se meritonte vdekjen.
65 Atëherë disa filluan ta pështyjnë, t’ia zënë fytyrën, ta qëllojnë me shuplaka dhe t’i thonë: “Profetizo!.” Dhe rojat e godisnin.
66 Ndërsa Pjetri ishte poshtë në pallat, erdhi një shërbëtore e kryepriftit.

68 Por ai e mohoi duke thënë: “Nuk e njoh, nuk kuptoj çfarë thua.” Pastaj doli jashtë në hajat dhe gjeli këndoi.
69 Dhe shërbëtorja, duke e parë përsëri, filloi t’u flasë të pranishmëve: “Ky është një nga ata.”

The Plan to Kill Jesus(A)
14 It was now only two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread [C the annual festival that celebrates God’s rescue of Israel from Egypt; Ex. 12]. The ·leading [T chief] priests and ·teachers of the law [scribes] were trying to find a ·trick [secret way] to arrest Jesus and kill him. 2 But they said, “We must not do it during the feast, because the people might cause a riot.”
A Woman with Perfume for Jesus(B)
3 Jesus was in Bethany at the house of ·Simon, who had a skin disease [L Simon the leper; C for leprosy, see 1:40; Simon may have been healed by Jesus]. While Jesus was ·eating there [L reclining; C the posture for a banquet or dinner party; 2:15], a woman approached him with an alabaster ·jar [vial] filled with very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She ·opened [broke open] the ·jar [vial] and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.
4 Some who were there became ·upset [indignant] and said to each other, “Why waste that perfume? 5 It was worth ·a full year’s work [L over three hundred denarii]. It could have been sold and the money given to the poor.” And they ·got very angry with [harshly scolded] the woman.
6 Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you ·troubling [bothering; criticizing] her? She did an ·excellent thing [beautiful/good deed] for me. 7 You will always have the poor with you, and you can help them anytime you want [Deut. 15:11]. But you will not always have me. 8 This woman did the only thing she could do for me; she ·poured perfume on [anointed] my body to prepare me for burial. 9 I tell you the truth, wherever the ·Good News [Gospel] is preached in all the world, what this woman has done will be told, and people will remember her.”
Judas Betrays Jesus(C)
10 One of ·the twelve apostles [the Twelve], Judas Iscariot, went to talk to the ·leading [T chief] priests to offer to ·hand Jesus over [betray him] to them. 11 These priests were pleased about this and promised to pay Judas money. So he watched for ·the best time [an opportunity] to ·turn Jesus in [betray him].
Jesus Eats the Passover Meal(D)
12 It was now the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread when the Passover lamb was sacrificed. Jesus’ ·followers [disciples] said to him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?”
13 Jesus sent two of his ·followers [disciples] and said to them, “Go into the city and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 When he goes into a house, tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says: “Where is my guest room in which I can eat the Passover meal with my ·followers [disciples]?”’ 15 The owner will show you a large ·room upstairs [T upper room] that is furnished and ready. ·Prepare the food [Make preparations] for us there.”
16 So the ·followers [disciples] left and went into the city. Everything happened as Jesus had said, so they prepared the Passover meal.
17 In the evening, Jesus went to that house with the twelve. 18 While they were all ·eating [L reclining and eating; see v. 3], Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will ·turn against [betray] me—one of you eating with me now.”
19 The ·followers [disciples] were very ·sad [distressed; pained] to hear this. Each one began to say to Jesus, “·I am not the one, am I [Surely not I; or Is it I]?”
20 Jesus answered, “It is one of the twelve—one who dips his bread into the bowl with me [C probably not a signal, but means “one who shares close fellowship with me”]. 21 The Son of Man will ·die [go to his fate; L go], just as the Scriptures say. But ·how terrible it will be for [L woe to] the person ·who hands the Son of Man over to be killed [L by whom the Son of Man is betrayed]. It would be better for him if he had never been born.”
The Lord’s Supper(E)
22 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread and ·thanked God for [blessed] it and broke it. Then he gave it to his ·followers [disciples] and said, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then Jesus took a cup and ·thanked God for it [gave thanks] and gave it to ·the followers [the disciples; them], and they all drank from the cup.
24 Then Jesus said, “This is my blood ·which is the new[a] agreement that God makes with his people [or which confirms/establishes the new covenant; L of the new covenant; Ex. 24:8. Jer. 31:31–34]. This blood is poured out for many [Is. 53:12]. 25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine [C wine] again until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 After singing a hymn [C probably the Hallel psalms (Ps. 113—118), sung during the Passover meal], they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus’ Followers Will Leave Him(F)
27 Then Jesus told them, “You will all ·stumble in your faith [fall away; desert me], because it is written in the Scriptures:
‘I will ·kill [strike] the shepherd,
and the sheep will ·scatter [be scattered]’ [Zech. 13:7].
28 But after ·I rise from the dead [L I am raised], I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
29 Peter said, “Everyone else may ·stumble in their faith [fall away; desert you], but I will not.”
30 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, tonight before the rooster crows twice you will ·say three times you don’t know me [deny/disown me three times].”
31 But Peter insisted, “Even if I must die with you, I will never ·say that I don’t know [deny/disown] you!” And all the others said the same thing.
Jesus Prays Alone(G)
32 Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] went to a place called Gethsemane. He said to them, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him, and he began to be very ·sad [distressed] and ·troubled [anguished]. 34 He said to them, “My ·heart [soul] is ·full of sorrow [overwhelmed with grief], to the point of death. Stay here and ·watch [stay awake; be alert].”
35 After walking a little farther away from them, Jesus fell [with his face] to the ground and prayed that, if possible, ·he would not have this time of suffering [L the hour might pass him by]. 36 He prayed, “Abba [C Aramaic for “father”], Father! You can do all things. ·Take away this cup of suffering [L Take this cup from me; C suffering is metaphorically portrayed as something bitter to drink; see 10:38]. But do ·what you want [your will], not ·what I want [my will].”
37 Then Jesus went back to his ·followers [disciples] and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you ·stay awake [watch] with me for one hour? 38 ·Stay awake [Keep watch] and pray for strength ·against temptation [or not to fail the test]. The spirit ·wants to do what is right [is willing], but ·the body [human nature; T the flesh] is weak.”
39 Again Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40 Then he went back to his ·followers [disciples], and again he found them asleep, because their eyes were very heavy. And they did not know what to say to him.
41 After Jesus prayed a third time, he went back to his ·followers [disciples] and said to them, “·Are you still sleeping and resting? [or Go ahead, sleep and have your rest!] ·That’s enough [It’s all over; The account is settled; C the meaning of this phrase is uncertain]. The time has come for the Son of Man to be ·handed over to [L betrayed/delivered into the hands of] sinful people. 42 Get up, we must go. Look, here comes ·the man who has turned against me [my betrayer].”
Jesus Is Arrested(H)
43 At once, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of ·the twelve apostles [the Twelve], came up. With him were many people carrying swords and clubs who had been sent from the ·leading [T chief] priests, the ·teachers of the law [scribes], and the Jewish elders.
44 ·Judas [L The betrayer] had planned a signal for them, saying, “The man I kiss is Jesus. ·Arrest [Seize] him and guard him while you lead him away.” 45 So Judas went straight to Jesus and said, “·Teacher [L Rabbi]!” and kissed him. 46 Then the people grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47 One of ·his followers [L those] standing nearby pulled out his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48 Then Jesus said, “You came to get me with swords and clubs as if I were a ·criminal [revolutionary; rebel; L robber; C the term “robber” was used by the Romans of insurrectionists]. 49 Every day I was with you teaching in the Temple, and you did not arrest me there. But all these things have happened to ·make the Scriptures come true [fulfill the Scriptures].” 50 Then ·all of Jesus’ followers [L everyone] ·left [deserted] him and ·ran away [fled].
51 A young man [C perhaps the author Mark himself], wearing only a linen ·cloth [sheet; shirt], was following Jesus, and the people also grabbed him. 52 But the cloth [sheet; shirt] he was wearing came off, and he ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Leaders(I)
53 The people who arrested Jesus led him to the house of the high priest, where all the ·leading [T chief] priests, the elders, and the ·teachers of the law [scribes] were gathered. 54 Peter followed far behind and entered the courtyard of the high priest’s house. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
55 The ·leading [T chief] priests and the whole ·Jewish council [Sanhedrin; C the highest Jewish court] tried to find ·something that Jesus had done wrong [evidence/testimony against him] so they could ·kill [execute] him. But the council could find no proof of anything. 56 Many people came and ·told false things [gave false testimony] about him, but all said different things—none of them agreed.
57 Then some people stood up and ·lied [gave false testimony] about Jesus, saying, 58 “We heard this man say, ‘I will destroy this Temple that people made. And three days later, I will build another Temple not made by people.’” 59 But even ·the things these people said [their testimony] did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood before them and asked Jesus, “Aren’t you going to answer? ·Don’t you have something to say about their [or What are these] ·charges [testimony] against you?” 61 But Jesus ·said nothing [was silent; Is. 53:7]; he did not answer.
The high priest asked Jesus another question: “Are you the ·Christ [Messiah], the Son of ·the blessed God [L the blessed (one)]?”
62 Jesus answered, “I am. And ·in the future you will see [L you will see] the Son of Man sitting at the right ·side [L hand; see 12:36] of God, the Powerful One, and coming on clouds ·in the sky [of heaven; Ps. 110:1; Dan. 7:13–14].”
63 When the high priest heard this, he tore his clothes [C a sign of sorrow or outrage] and said, “Why do we need more witnesses? 64 You all heard ·him say these things against God [the blasphemy]. What ·do you think [is your verdict]?”
They all said that Jesus was guilty and ·should [deserved to] die. 65 Some of the people there began to spit at Jesus. They blindfolded him and beat him with their fists and said, “·Prophesy! [Prove you are a prophet!]” Then the guards led Jesus away and beat him.
Peter Denies Jesus(J)
66 While Peter was in the courtyard, a servant girl of the high priest came there. 67 She saw Peter warming himself at the fire and looked closely at him.
Then she said, “You also were with Jesus, that man from Nazareth.”
68 But Peter denied it. He said, “I don’t know or understand what you are talking about.” Then Peter left and went toward the entrance of the courtyard. And the rooster crowed.[b]
69 The servant girl saw Peter there, and again she said to the people who were standing nearby, “This man is one of those who followed Jesus.” 70 Again Peter ·said that it was not true [denied it].
A short time later, some people were standing near Peter saying, “Surely you are one of those who followed Jesus, because you are from Galilee, too [C Peter’s Galilean accent gave him away; Matt. 26:73].”
71 Then Peter began to place a curse on himself and swear, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
72 At once, the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will ·say three times that you don’t know me [deny/disown me three times].” Then Peter broke down and began to cry.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(A)(B)(C)
14 Now the Passover(D) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(E) 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3 While he was in Bethany,(F) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(G)
4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[a] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

The Last Supper(M)(N)
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(O) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(P) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(Q) 21 The Son of Man(R) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(S) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(T)
24 “This is my blood of the[c] covenant,(U) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(V)
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(W)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(X)
27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(Z)
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[e] you yourself will disown me three times.”(AA)
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(AB) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
Gethsemane(AC)
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(AD) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(AE) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(AF) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[f] Father,”(AG) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(AH) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(AI)
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AJ) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(AK)
39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(AL) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AM)
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(AN) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(AO) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(AP) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(AQ) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(AR)
51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AS)(AT)
53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(AU) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(AV)
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AW) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(AX) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(AY)
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(AZ)
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(BA)
63 The high priest tore his clothes.(BB) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death.(BC) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(BD)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BE)
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(BF) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(BG) she looked closely at him.
“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(BH) she said.
68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(BI) he said, and went out into the entryway.[g]
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(BJ)
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(BK)
71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(BL)
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[h] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[i] you will disown me three times.”(BM) And he broke down and wept.
