헤롯이 예수를 세례자 요한으로 생각하다
(마 14:1-12; 눅 9:7-9)
14 헤롯왕[a]도 예수의 소문을 들었다. 예수의 이름이 널리 퍼져 있었기 때문이었다. 어떤 사람들은 예수를 두고 이렇게 말하고 있었다. “그에게서 이런 기적의 힘이 나타나는 것을 보면, 죽은 세례자 요한[b]이 다시 살아난 것이 틀림없다.”
15 어떤 사람들은 “아니, 그는 엘리야[c]다.” 라고 말하였다.
또 어떤 사람들은 “그는 옛 예언자들 가운데 한 사람과 같은 예언자다.” 라고 말하였다
16 그러나 헤롯은 이런저런 이야기들을 듣고 이렇게 말하였다. “내가 목을 벤 그 요한이 다시 살아났구나.” 헤롯이 그렇게 말한 것은 다음과 같은 일이 있었기 때문이다.
세례자 요한의 죽음
17-18 헤롯은 동생 빌립의 아내인 헤로디아와 결혼했었다. 그러자 요한은 헤롯에게, “동생의 아내와 결혼하는 것은 옳지 않다.” 고 여러 차례 말하였다. 그래서 헤롯은 요한을 잡아 감옥에 넣으라는 명령을 내렸다. 19 헤로디아는 요한에게 원한을 품고 그를 죽이고 싶어하였으나 죽이지는 못하였다. 20 헤롯이 요한을 의롭고 성스러운 사람으로 알고, 그를 두려워하며 보호해 주었기 때문이었다. 헤롯은 요한의 설교를 들으면 마음이 편치 않았다. 그러면서도 즐겨 그의 설교를 들었다.
21 그러다가 헤로디아에게 좋은 기회가 왔다. 헤롯은 자신의 생일을 맞이하여 잔치를 벌였다. 그는 정부의 고관들과 군대의 장성들과 갈릴리의 유력 인사들을 초대하였다. 22 잔치가 한창일 때 헤로디아의 딸이 들어와 춤을 추어 헤롯과 그의 손님들을 기쁘게 하였다.
그래서 헤롯이 그 소녀를 보고 말하였다. “네 소원을 말해 보라. 내가 다 들어주겠다.” 23 그는 “네가 원하는 것은 무엇이든 들어줄 테니 어서 말해 보라. 내 왕국의 절반이라도 떼어 주겠다.” 라고 소녀에게 약속하였다.
24 소녀는 제 어미에게 가서 물었다. “임금님께 무엇을 달라고 청할까요?”
헤로디아가 대답하였다. “세례자 요한의 머리를 달라고 하여라.”
25 소녀는 곧 왕에게 가서 말하였다. “세례자 요한의 머리를 주십시오. 지금 곧 쟁반에 담아 갖다 주시기 바랍니다.”
26 왕은 매우 괴로웠지만 손님들 앞에서 한 맹세 때문에 소녀의 청을 거절하고 싶지 않았다. 27 그래서 왕은 경비병을 보내며 요한의 머리를 베어 오라고 명하였다. 경비병은 감옥으로 가서 요한의 머리를 베어, 28 쟁반에 담아 왔다. 왕은 그것을 소녀에게 주었고, 소녀는 그것을 제 어미에게 가져갔다.
29 요한의 제자들이 이 소식을 듣고 와서 그의 주검을 찾아다가 무덤에 모셨다.

14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[a] “John the Baptist(C) has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
15 Others said, “He is Elijah.”(D)
And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,(E) like one of the prophets of long ago.”(F)
16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”
17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.(G) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(H) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(I) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[b]; yet he liked to listen to him.
21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(J) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(K) 22 When the daughter of[c] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.
The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(L)
24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”
“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.
25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
