16 “Brothers, (A)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (B)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For (C)he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in (D)this ministry.” 18 (Now this man (E)acquired a field with (F)the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong[a] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called (G)in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms,

(H)“‘May his camp become desolate,
    and let there be no one to dwell in it’;

and

(I)“‘Let another take his office.’

21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during (J)all the time that the Lord Jesus (K)went in and out among us, 22 (L)beginning from the baptism of John until the day when (M)he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us (N)a witness to his resurrection.” 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called (O)Barsabbas, who was also called (P)Justus, and (Q)Matthias. 24 And (R)they prayed and said, “You, Lord, (S)who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in (T)this ministry and (U)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”

  1. Acts 1:18 Or swelling up

26 Jesus answered, (A)“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread (B)when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, (C)he gave it to Judas, (D)the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, (E)Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, (F)“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, (G)because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need (H)for the feast,” or that he should (I)give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. (J)And it was night.

But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii[a] and (A)given to the poor?” He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and (B)having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.

Then when (A)Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus[a] was condemned, (B)he changed his mind and brought back (C)the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? (D)See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, (E)he departed, and he went and hanged himself.
