Jesus Appoints the Twelve Apostles

¹³ Jesus went up the mountain, summoned those he wanted, and they came to him. ¹⁴ He appointed twelve whom he designated apostles,^[a] so that they would be with him and so that he could send them out to preach ¹⁵ and to have authority to drive out demons. ¹⁶ He appointed the Twelve: Simon, to whom he gave the name Peter; ¹⁷ then James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, to whom he gave the nickname Boanerges, which means “Sons of Thunder”; ¹⁸ also Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus; finally, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, ¹⁹ and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
