2 And again he entered into Capernaum, after eight days. And it was heard, that he was in an house,
2 and many came together, so that they might not be in the house, nor at the gate [so that it took them not, neither at the gate]. And he spake to them the word.
3 And there came to him men that brought a man sick in the palsy [And there came to him men bringing a sick man in palsy], which was borne of four.
4 And when they might not bring him to Jesus for the people [And when they might not offer him to him for the company of people], they uncovered the roof where he was, and [they] opened it, and they let down the bed in which the sick man in palsy lay.
5 And when Jesus had seen the faith of them, he said to the sick man in palsy [Soothly when Jesus saw the faith of them, he saith to the sick man in palsy], Son, thy sins be forgiven to thee.
6 But there were some of the scribes sitting, and thinking in their hearts,
7 What speaketh he thus? He blasphemeth; who may forgive sins, but God alone?
8 And [anon] when Jesus had known this by the Holy Ghost, that they thought so within themselves, he saith to them [Jesus said to them], What think ye these things in your hearts?
9 What is lighter to say to the sick man in palsy, Sins be forgiven to thee, or to say, Rise, take thy bed, and walk?
10 But that ye know that man's Son hath power in earth to forgive sins, he said to the sick man in palsy [he saith to the sick man in palsy],
11 I say to thee, rise up, [and] take thy bed, and go into thine house.
12 And at once he rose up, and when he had taken the bed [And anon, he rose up, and, the bed taken up], he went before all men, so that all men wondered, and honoured God, and said [saying], For we saw never so.
13 And he went out again to the sea, and all the people [and all the company of people] came to him; and he taught them.
14 And when he passed, he saw Levi of Alphaeus sitting at the tollbooth, and he said to him, Follow me. And he rose, and followed him.
15 And it was done, when he sat at the meat in his house, many publicans and sinful men sat together at the meat [sat together at meat] with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many that followed him.
16 And scribes and Pharisees seeing, that he ate with publicans and sinful men, said to his disciples, Why eateth and drinketh your master with publicans and sinners [Why your master eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners]?
17 When this was heard, Jesus said to them, Whole men have no need to a physician, but they that be evil-at-ease [This thing heard, Jesus saith to them, Whole men have no need to a leech, but they that have evil]; for I came not to call just men, but sinners.
18 And the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came, and said to him, Why fast the disciples of John, and the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? [And the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came, and say to him, Why the disciples of John and of Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?]
19 And Jesus said to them, Whether the sons of the spousals be able to fast [Whether the sons of the weddings may fast], as long as the spouse is with them? As long time as they have the spouse with them, they be not able to fast [they may not fast].
20 But days shall come, when the spouse shall be taken away from them, and then they shall fast in those days.
21 No man seweth a patch of new cloth to an old cloak [to an old cloth], else he taketh away [else it taketh away] the new patch from the old, and a more breaking is made.
22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles, else the wine shall burst the bottles, and the wine shall be shed out [and the wine shall be poured out], and the bottles shall perish. But new wine shall be put into new bottles [But new wine oweth to be put into new wine vessels].
23 And it was done again, when the Lord walked in the sabbaths by the corns, and his disciples began to pass forth [and his disciples began to go forth], and [to] pluck ears of the corn.
24 And the Pharisees said to him, Lo! what thy disciples do in the sabbaths, that is not leaveful [Lo! what do thy disciples in sabbaths, the thing that is not leaveful(?)].
25 And he said to them, Read ye never what David did, when he had need, and he hungered, and they that were with him?
26 How he went into the house of God, under Abiathar, prince of priests, and ate loaves of proposition [and ate loaves of proposition, either of setting forth], which it was not leaveful to eat, but to priests alone, and he gave to them that were with him.
27 And he said to them, The sabbath is made for man, and not man for the sabbath;
28 and so man's Son is Lord also of the sabbath.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic
2 And when he returned to (A)Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. 3 (B)And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, (C)they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. 5 And when Jesus (D)saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, (E)your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? (F)He is blaspheming! (G)Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 And immediately Jesus, (H)perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that (I)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and (J)glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
Jesus Calls Levi
13 He went out again beside the sea, and (K)all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. 14 (L)And as he passed by, he saw (M)Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
15 And as he reclined at table in his house, many (N)tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 And (O)the scribes of[a] the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, (P)“Why does he eat[b] with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. (Q)I came not to call the righteous, (R)but sinners.”
A Question About Fasting
18 Now (S)John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, (T)“Why do John's disciples and (U)the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, (V)“Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20 (W)The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and (X)then they will fast in that day. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. 22 And no one puts new wine into old (Y)wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”[c]
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
23 (Z)One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples (AA)began to pluck heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, (AB)why are they doing (AC)what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 And he said to them, (AD)“Have you never read (AE)what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: 26 how he entered the house of God, in the time of[d] (AF)Abiathar the high priest, and ate (AG)the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” 27 And he said to them, (AH)“The Sabbath was made for man, (AI)not man for the Sabbath. 28 So (AJ)the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”

Jesus helbreder en mann som var lam
2 Noen dager seinere kom Jesus på nytt til Kapernaum. Nyheten om at ham var kommet, spredde seg raskt i byen. 2 Snart var huset der han bodde, så fullt av folk at de sto langt ute på gaten og tråkket på hverandre. Han talte til dem om budskapet fra Gud.[a]
3 Da kom fire menn bærende på en lam mann som lå på en liggematte. 4 De klarte ikke å trenge seg inn på grunn av folkemassen, og kunne derfor heller ikke komme fram til Jesus. De laget hull i taket over der han satt. Gjennom åpningen firte de ned liggematten med den lamme mannen. 5 Da Jesus så hvor stor tro de hadde, sa han til den lamme: ”Min sønn, jeg har tilgitt syndene dine!”
6 Men noen av de skriftlærde[b] som satt der, mumlet for seg selv: 7 ”Hvordan kan han snakke på denne blasfemiske måten og spotte[c] Gud? Det er jo bare Gud som kan tilgi synder.”

12 Da reiste mannen seg, rullet straks sammen liggematten og gikk ut, rett foran øynene på de sjokkerte tilskuerne som hyllet Gud og ropte: ”Aldri før har vi sett noe slikt!”
Jesus kaller en toller
13 Så fortsatte Jesus langs Genesaretsjøen. Store folkemasser kom til ham, og han underviste dem. 14 Mens han dro fram, fikk han se Levi, som var sønn til Alfeus, sitte ved tollboden. ”Kom og bli min disippel”, sa Jesus til ham. Levi reiste seg og fulgte Jesus.
15 Senere da Jesus og disiplene spiste sammen i huset til Levi, hadde mange av Levis gamle kolleger i tolletaten blandet seg med gjestene. Også noen andre ukjente folk var på plass i selskapet. Mange av disse hadde begynt å følge Jesus.
16 Da de skriftlærde[e] og fariseerne[f] så Jesus i dette selskapet, sa de til disiplene: ”Er han virkelig falt så dypt at han spiser sammen med tollere og syndere?” 17 Jesus hørte det som ble hvisket, og sa: ”Det er ikke de friske som trenger lege, men de syke. Min oppgave her på jorden er å føre syndere tilbake til Gud, ikke å ta hånd om de som allerede gjør Guds vilje.”
Jesus svarer på spørsmål om faste
18 Disiplene til døperen Johannes og fariseerne[g] fastet regelmessig. En dag kom noen og spurte Jesus hvorfor ikke disiplene hans fastet, siden dette var vanlig både hos Johannes og fariseerne.
19 Jesus svarte: ”Bryllupsgjestene kan da vel ikke faste og gå sultne mens brudgommen ennå er hos dem? Nei, så lenge brudgommen er sammen med dem, kan de ikke faste. 20 Men den dagen han blir tatt fra dem, da kommer de til å faste. 21 Alt har sin rette tid! Ingen lapper for eksempel et gammelt klesplagg med et stykke nytt tøy som aldri har blitt vasket. Da vil det nye tøyet krympe og rive i stykker plagget, slik at hullet blir enda større. 22 Heller ikke slår noen ny vin i gamle vinsekker, for når vinen gjærer, vil sekkene bli sprengt og alt blir ødelagt, både vinen og sekkene. Nei, ny vin slår de i nye skinnsekker som tåler trykket.”
Disiplene plukker aks på hviledagen
23 En gang da det var hviledag[h], gikk Jesus og disiplene langs en kornåker. Mens de gikk, nappet disiplene en håndfull aks for å spise.
24 Noen av fariseerne[i] sa da til Jesus: ”Hvorfor gjør de dette? Det er jo forbudt etter Moseloven[j] å høste på hviledagen.”
25-26 Men Jesus svarte dem: ”Har dere aldri lest hva kong David og mennene hans gjorde den gangen da Abjatar var øversteprest, og de ble sultne og ikke hadde noe å spise?[k] David gikk inn i Guds hus og spiste av det spesielle brødet som bare prestene hadde lov til å spise. Han lot også mennene sine spise det. Dette var jo også et slags brudd mot loven.” 27 Så sa Jesus til fariseerne: ”Husk på at hviledagen ble skapt for menneskene sin skyld, og ikke menneskene for hviledagen sin skyld. 28 Derfor har jeg, Menneskesønnen[l], rett til å avgjøre hva som er tillatt på hviledagen.”
