³⁵ Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!”

⁴⁷ Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” ⁴⁸ Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, ^(A)filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.

⁴⁹ The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”

¹¹ And they asked Him, saying, “Why do the scribes say ^(A)that Elijah must come first?”

¹² Then He answered and told them, “Indeed, Elijah is coming first and restores all things. And ^(B)how is it written concerning the Son of Man, that He must suffer many things and ^(C)be treated with contempt? ¹³ But I say to you that ^(D)Elijah has also come, and they did to him whatever they wished, as it is written of him.”

¹¹ Jesus answered and said to them, “Indeed, Elijah is coming ^[a]first and will ^(A)restore all things. ^12 (B)But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they ^(C)did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise ^(D)the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.” ^13 (E)Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.
