The Prayer in the Garden

³² Then^(A) they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He told His disciples,^(B) “Sit here while I pray.”^{(C) 33} He took Peter,^(D) James,^(E) and John^(F) with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and horrified. ³⁴ Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow^[a] —to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.”^{(G) 35} Then He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour^(H) might pass from Him. ³⁶ And He said, “Abba,^(I) Father!^(J) All things are possible^(K) for You. Take this cup^(L) away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”

³⁷ Then He came and found them sleeping. “Simon,^(M) are you sleeping?” He asked Peter.^(N) “Couldn’t you stay awake one hour? ³⁸ Stay awake and pray^(O) so that you won’t enter into temptation.^(P) The spirit^(Q) is willing, but the flesh^(R) is weak.”

³⁹ Once again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing. ⁴⁰ And He came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open.^[b] They did not know what to say to Him.^{(S) 41} Then He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come. Look, the Son of Man^(T) is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.^{(U) 42} Get up;^(V) let’s go! See—My betrayer is near.”

⁴⁰ When He reached the place,^(A) He told them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”^{(B) 41} Then He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray,^{(C) 42} “Father, if You are willing, take this cup^(D) away from Me—nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.”

[⁴³ Then an angel from heaven^(E) appeared to Him, strengthening Him. ⁴⁴ Being in anguish,^(F) He prayed more fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.]^{[a] 45} When He got up from prayer and came to the disciples, He found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief.^{[b] 46} “Why are you sleeping?” He asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation.”
