^17 (A)And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. ¹⁸ And as they were reclining at table and eating, ^(B)Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, ^(C)one who is eating with me.” ¹⁹ They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” ²⁰ He said to them, “It is ^(D)one of the twelve, ^(E)one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. ²¹ For the Son of Man goes ^(F)as it is written of him, but ^(G)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^(H)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

^14 (A)And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him.

^21 (A)But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is ^(B)with me on the table. ²² For the Son of Man goes ^(C)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” ²³ And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

One of You Will Betray Me

²¹ After saying these things, ^(A)Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, ^(B)“Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(C)one of you will betray me.” ^22 (D)The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. ^23 (E)One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table ^(F)at Jesus' side,^{[a] 24} so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus^[b] of whom he was speaking. ^25 (G)So that disciple, ^(H)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” ²⁶ Jesus answered, ^(I)“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread ^(J)when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, ^(K)he gave it to Judas, ^(L)the son of Simon Iscariot.
