²³ Just then a man with an unclean^(A) spirit^(B) was in their synagogue.^(C) He cried out, ²⁴ “What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?^(D) Have you come to destroy^(E) us? I know who you are—the Holy^(F) One of God!” ^(G)

²⁵ Jesus rebuked^(H) him saying, “Be silent,^(I) and come out of him!” ²⁶ And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions,^(J) shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.

²⁷ They were all amazed,^(K) and so they began to ask^(L) each other, “What is this? A new teaching^(M) with authority!^[a](N) He commands even the unclean^(O) spirits,^(P) and they obey him.”

²⁹ For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was guarded, bound by chains and shackles, he would snap the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places.

⁴² As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy,^(A) and gave him back to his father.^(B)

² He called out in a mighty voice:
