42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(B) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(C) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(D) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died.

42 (A)And when evening had come, since it was (B)the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, (C)a respected member of the council, who (D)was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.[a] And summoning (E)the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.

42 Le soir venu, comme c'était le jour de la préparation, c'est-à-dire la veille du sabbat, 43 Joseph d'Arimathée arriva. C’était un membre éminent du conseil, qui attendait lui aussi le royaume de Dieu. Il osa se rendre vers Pilate pour demander le corps de Jésus. 44 Pilate s'étonna qu'il soit déjà mort; il fit venir l’officier et lui demanda si Jésus était mort depuis longtemps.
