¹⁹ And they answered, ^(A)“John the Baptist. But others say, ^(B)Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.”

²¹ And they asked him, “What then? ^(A)Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you ^(B)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus

^7 (A)Now ^(B)Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that ^(C)John had been raised from the dead, ^8 (D)by some that Elijah had appeared, and ^(E)by others that one of the prophets of old had risen.

^15 (A)But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is ^(B)a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”

² and he said to his servants, ^(A)“This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”

^5 (A)“Behold, I will send you ^(B)Elijah the prophet ^(C)before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

¹⁷ So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, ^(A)“He is a prophet.”

Division Among the People

⁴⁰ When they heard these words, ^(A)some of the people said, “This really is ^(B)the Prophet.”

²⁵ They asked him, ^(A)“Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
