Jesus is Tempted by Satan(A)
4 Then Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan. He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where he was being tempted by the Devil for 40 days. During that time he ate nothing at all, and when they were over he became hungry.
3 The Devil told him, “Since[a] you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
4 Jesus answered him, “It is written,
‘One must not live on bread alone,
but on every word of God.’”[b]
5 The Devil[c] also took him to a high place[d] and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant. 6 He told Jesus,[e] “I will give you all this authority, along with their glory, because it has been given to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 So if you will worship me, all this will be yours.”
8 But Jesus answered him, “It is written,
9 The Devil[h] also took him into Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the Temple. He told Jesus,[i] “Since[j] you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 because it is written,
‘God[k] will put his angels in charge of you
to watch over you carefully.
11 With their hands they will hold you up,
so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.’”[l]
12 Jesus answered him, “It has been said, ‘You must not tempt the Lord[m] your God.’”[n]
13 After the Devil had finished tempting Jesus in every possible way, he left him until another time.
Jesus Begins His Ministry in Galilee(B)
14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee by the power of the Spirit. Meanwhile, the news about him spread throughout the surrounding country. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues and was continuously receiving praise from everyone.
Jesus is Rejected at Nazareth(C)
16 Then Jesus[o] came to Nazareth, where he had been raised. As was his custom, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. When he stood up to read, 17 the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord[p] is upon me;
he has anointed me to tell
the good news to the poor.
He has sent me to announce release to the prisoners
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set oppressed people free,
19 and to announce the year of the Lord’s[q] favor.”[r]
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. While the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him, 21 he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled, as you’ve heard it read aloud.”[s]
22 All the people began to speak well of him and to wonder at the gracious words that flowed from his mouth. They said, “This is Joseph’s son, isn’t it?”
23 So he told them, “You will probably quote this proverb to me, ‘Doctor, heal yourself! Do everything here in your hometown that we hear you did in Capernaum.’”
24 He added, “I tell all of you[t] with certainty, a prophet is not accepted in his hometown. 25 I’m telling you the truth—there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when it didn’t rain[u] for three years and six months and there was a severe famine everywhere in the land. 26 Yet Elijah wasn’t sent to a single one of those widows except to one at Zarephath in Sidon. 27 There were also many lepers in Israel in the prophet Elisha’s time, yet not one of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”
28 All the people in the synagogue became furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, forced Jesus[v] out of the city, and led him to the edge of the hill on which their city was built, intending to throw him off. 30 But he walked right through the middle of them and went away.
Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit(D)
31 Then Jesus[w] went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee, and began teaching the people[x] on Sabbath days.[y] 32 They were utterly amazed at what he taught, because his message was spoken[z] with authority.
33 In the synagogue was a man who had a demon.[aa] He screamed with a loud voice, 34 “Oh, no! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
35 But Jesus rebuked him. “Be quiet,” he said, “and come out of him!” At this, the demon threw the man[ab] down in the middle of the synagogue[ac] and came out of him without hurting him.
36 Overwhelmed with amazement, they all kept saying to one another, “What kind of statement is this?—because with authority and power he gives orders to unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 So news about him spread to every place in the surrounding region.
Jesus Heals Many People(E)
38 Then Jesus[ad] got up to leave the synagogue and went into Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, so they asked Jesus[ae] about her. 39 He bent over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began serving them. 40 When the sun was setting, everyone who had any friends[af] suffering from various diseases brought them to him. He placed his hands on each of them and began healing them. 41 Even demons came out of many people, screaming, “You are the Son of God!” But Jesus[ag] rebuked them and ordered them not to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.[ah]
Jesus Goes on a Preaching Tour(F)
42 At daybreak he left and went to a deserted place, while the crowds kept looking for him. When they came to him, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he told them, “I have to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God in other cities, because I was sent to do that also.” 44 So he continued to preach in the synagogues of Galilee.[ai]

4 Jesus gik videre fra Jordanfloden, efter at han var blevet fyldt med Helligåndens kraft, og han blev ført rundt i Judæas ødemark under Åndens ledelse, 2 mens han i 40 dage blev fristet af Djævelen. I den tid spiste han intet, og henimod slutningen var han meget sulten. 3 Da sagde Djævelen til ham: „Hvis du virkelig er Guds Søn, hvorfor siger du så ikke til den sten dér, at den skal blive til brød?”
4 Jesus svarede: „Der står skrevet: ‚Et menneske lever ikke af brød alene!’[a]”
5 Derefter tog Djævelen ham med et andet sted hen, og i et glimt viste han Jesus alle verdens lande. 6 Så sagde han: „Jeg vil give dig magt over al den herlighed, du ser, for den magt er blevet overdraget til mig, og jeg giver den til hvem, jeg vil. 7 Hvis bare du vil falde på knæ og tilbede mig, vil jeg overgive det alt sammen til dig.”
8 Jesus svarede: „Der står skrevet: ‚Det er Herren, din Gud, du skal tilbede, og ham alene du skal tjene.’[b]”
9 Så tog Djævelen ham med ind til Jerusalem og op på det højeste hjørne af tempelmuren. „Hvis du virkelig er Guds Søn,” sagde han, „så kast dig ud herfra! 10 Der står jo skrevet: ‚Han befaler sine engle at passe på dig. 11 De skal bære dig på hænder, så du ikke støder din fod på nogen sten.’[c]”
12 Jesus svarede: „Der er sagt: ‚Du må ikke provokere Herren, din Gud.’[d]”
13 Da Djævelen var nået til ende med sine fristelser, lod han Jesus være i fred, indtil han kunne øjne en ny chance.
Jesus begynder at fortælle om Guds rige rundt om i Galilæa(B)
14 Jesus vendte nu tilbage til Galilæa, hvor han vandrede rundt og udførte mange mirakuløse helbredelser ved Helligåndens kraft. Inden længe blev han kendt langt uden for Galilæas grænser. 15 Han underviste også i synagogerne, og folk talte med beundring om ham.
Jesus forkastes som Messias af sine bysbørn
16 Da Jesus kom til Nazaret, hvor han var vokset op, gik han den følgende sabbat hen til synagogen, som han plejede. Under mødet blev han bedt om at læse op fra Skrifterne, så han rejste sig, 17 og man rakte ham profeten Esajas’ bogrulle. Han rullede den ud og læste op fra det sted, hvor der står:
18 „Herrens Ånd er over mig,
fordi han har udvalgt mig.
Han har sendt mig for at bringe godt nyt til de afmægtige,[e]
forkynde frihed for de fangne,
give nyt syn til de blinde,
og rejse dem op, som er blevet trampet ned.
19 Det bliver en tid, hvor Herren tager imod alle,
som kommer til ham.”[f]
20 Derpå rullede Jesus bogrullen sammen igen, gav den tilbage til synagogetjeneren og satte sig ned for at kommentere det, han havde læst.[g] Alle i synagogen stirrede spændt på ham. 21 „I dag er de skriftord, I lige har hørt, gået i opfyldelse!” begyndte han.
22 Alle fik et godt indtryk af ham, og de var betaget af de vidunderlige ord, der kom fra hans mund. Men at Jesus skulle være Messias,[h] det kunne de ikke acceptere. „Jamen, det er jo Josefs søn,” blev de ved med at sige.
23 Jesus svarede: „I vil sikkert bruge ordsproget: ‚Læge, læg dig selv’ på mig,—og I vil sige: ‚Hvorfor gør du ikke de samme undere her i din hjemby, som du gjorde i Kapernaum?’ 24 Men det siger jeg jer: Ingen profet bliver accepteret som profet i sin hjemby. 25-26 Tænk på det mirakel, som profeten Elias gjorde for at hjælpe en enke i Zarepta i Sidons land. Der var ellers enker nok i Israel, som trængte til hjælp, for det regnede ikke i tre et halvt år, og der var stor hungersnød i landet, men Elias blev ikke sendt til nogen af dem. 27 Eller tænk på profeten Elisa, som helbredte syreren Na’aman, skønt der var mange spedalske i Israel, der trængte til hjælp.”
28 Da folk i synagogen hørte den udtalelse, blev de rasende. 29 De sprang op og førte Jesus ud af byen, hen mod randen af det bjerg, Nazaret er bygget på. De ville styrte ham ned, 30 men han gik roligt sin vej midt igennem menneskemængden.
Jesu autoritet—hans magt over de onde ånder(C)
31 Jesus slog sig derefter ned i Kapernaum. Den følgende sabbat underviste han i synagogen, 32 og hans ord gjorde dybt indtryk på folk, for han talte til dem med en autoritet, de ikke var vant til.
33 Nu var der i forsamlingen en mand, der var besat af en ond ånd. Han begyndte at råbe af fuld hals: 34 „Lad os være i fred, Jesus Nazaræer! Er du kommet for at ødelægge os? Jeg ved, hvem du er! Du er Guds hellige Søn!”
35 „Ti stille, og kom ud af ham!” befalede Jesus. Den onde ånd kastede manden til jorden og fór så skrigende ud af ham uden at gøre ham yderligere fortræd. 36 De tilstedeværende blev forfærdede og begyndte at diskutere, hvad der var sket: „Hvilken utrolig magt! Han taler jo med en sådan autoritet, at selv de onde ånder adlyder ham og farer ud.” 37 Og rygtet om ham gik som en løbeild over hele egnen.
Jesus viser sin magt til at helbrede alle mulige sygdomme(D)
38 Fra synagogen gik Jesus hen til Simons hus, hvor Simons svigermor lå med høj feber. Man bad Jesus om at helbrede hende, 39 og han gik hen til hende og befalede feberen at forlade hende. Feberen forsvandt, og hun stod op med det samme og sørgede for mad til dem.
40 Da solen var gået ned, og sabbatten dermed var forbi, kom folk med alle dem, der led af forskellige slags sygdomme. Jesus lagde hænderne på hver enkelt og helbredte dem. 41 Mange blev befriet fra onde ånder, og når ånderne på hans befaling kom ud, råbte de: „Du er Guds Søn!” Men Jesus ønskede ikke, de skulle røbe, at han var Messias. Derfor befalede han dem at tie stille.
Jesus fortsætter med at fortælle om Gud og helbrede i hele Galilæa(E)
42 Tidligt næste morgen gik Jesus ud til et øde sted. Folk ledte efter ham alle vegne, og da de fandt ham, bad de ham om ikke at forlade dem. Men han sagde: 43 „Jeg må også bringe budskabet om Guds rige til de andre byer. Det er det, jeg er blevet sendt for at gøre.” 44 Og han vandrede omkring og forkyndte i landets synagoger.[i]

I stedet har teksten et ord, der betyder „acceptere, tage imod, byde velkommen”. Det samme ord kommer igen i 4,24 om en profet, der ikke bliver accepteret og budt velkommen i sin hjemby. Det er underforstået i denne sammenhæng, at det er dem, som føler sig selv magtesløse og kommer til Gud for at bede om hans hjælp, der vil opleve hans hjælp.

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(A)
4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(B) left the Jordan(C) and was led by the Spirit(D) into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days(E) he was tempted[a] by the devil.(F) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(G) tell this stone to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[b]”(H)
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(I) 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(J) and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[c]”(K)
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
14 Jesus returned to Galilee(P) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(Q) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(R) and everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth,(S) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(T) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(U) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(V)
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news(W) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[f](X)
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(Y) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(Z) in your hearing.”
22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.(AA)
23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown(AB) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”(AC)
24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(AD) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.(AE) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.(AF) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[g] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”(AG)

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(AJ)
31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(AK) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(AL) because his words had authority.(AM)
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(AN) Jesus of Nazareth?(AO) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(AP)—the Holy One of God!”(AQ)
35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(AR) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36 All the people were amazed(AS) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(AT) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(AU)
Jesus Heals Many(AV)(AW)
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(AX) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(AY) he healed them.(AZ) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(BA) But he rebuked(BB) them and would not allow them to speak,(BC) because they knew he was the Messiah.
42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(BD) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(BE)

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,
34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.
35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

4 Then (B)Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and (C)was led by the Spirit [a]into the wilderness, 2 being [b]tempted for forty days by the devil. And (D)in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are (E)the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
4 But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, (F)‘Man shall not live by bread alone, [c]but by every word of God.’ ”
5 [d]Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for (G)this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
8 And Jesus answered and said to him, [e]“Get behind Me, Satan! [f]For it is written, (H)‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
9 (I)Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
(J)‘He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you,’
11 and,
(K)‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, (L)‘You shall not [g]tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
13 Now when the devil had ended every [h]temptation, he departed from Him (M)until an opportune time.
Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry(N)
14 (O)Then Jesus returned (P)in the power of the Spirit to (Q)Galilee, and (R)news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He (S)taught in their synagogues, (T)being glorified by all.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth(U)
16 So He came to (V)Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, (W)He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18 “The(X) Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me [i]to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To (Y)set at liberty those who are [j]oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is (Z)fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 So all bore witness to Him, and (AA)marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, (AB)“Is this not Joseph’s son?”
23 He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in (AC)Capernaum,[k] do also here in (AD)Your country.’ ” 24 Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no (AE)prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, (AF)many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to [l]Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 (AG)And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”
28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were (AH)filled with [m]wrath, 29 (AI)and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then (AJ)passing through the midst of them, He went His way.
Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit(AK)
31 Then (AL)He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were (AM)astonished at His teaching, (AN)for His word was with authority. 33 (AO)Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? (AP)I know who You are—(AQ)the Holy One of God!”
35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, [n]“Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed(AR)
38 (AS)Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was [o]sick with a high fever, and they (AT)made request of Him concerning her. 39 So He stood over her and (AU)rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.
Many Healed After Sabbath Sunset(AV)
40 (AW)When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 (AX)And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, (AY)“You are [p]the Christ, the Son of God!”
And He, (AZ)rebuking them, did not allow them to [q]speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.
Jesus Preaches in Galilee(BA)
42 (BB)Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; 43 but He said to them, “I must (BC)preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” 44 (BD)And He was preaching in the synagogues of [r]Galilee.
