²⁴ “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.^(A)

⁵⁷ And they took offense^(A) at him.

But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.”^(B)

⁴⁴ (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)^(A)

⁴ Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”^{(A) 5} He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on^(B) a few sick people and heal them.

³ “I am a Jew,^(A) born in Tarsus^(B) of Cilicia,^(C) but brought up in this city. I studied under^(D) Gamaliel^(E) and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors.^(F) I was just as zealous^(G) for God as any of you are today.

¹⁸ and saw the Lord speaking to me. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.’

¹⁹ “‘Lord,’ I replied, ‘these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison^(A) and beat^(B) those who believe in you. ²⁰ And when the blood of your martyr^[a] Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’^(C)

²¹ “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’ ”^(D)

²² The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him!^(E) He’s not fit to live!”^(F)

⁴¹ And because of his words many more became believers.
