The Resurrection
24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared [to finish anointing the body].(A) 2 And they found the [large, circular] stone rolled back from the tomb, 3 but when they went inside, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed and wondering about this, suddenly, two men in dazzling clothing stood near them; 5 and as the women were terrified and were bowing their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why are you looking for the living One among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how He told you, while He was still in Galilee, 7 saying that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise [from death to life].”(B) 8 And they remembered His words, 9 and after returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven [apostles] and to all the rest. 10 Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna [the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward] and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles. 11 But their report seemed to them like idle talk and nonsense, and they would not believe them. 12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping [at the small entrance] and looking in, he saw only the linen [a]wrappings; and he went away, wondering about what had happened.(C)
The Road to Emmaus
13 And then, that very day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, which was about [b]seven miles from Jerusalem.(D) 14 And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. 15 While they were talking and discussing it, Jesus Himself came up and began walking with them. 16 But their eyes were [miraculously] prevented from recognizing Him. 17 Then Jesus asked them, “What are you discussing with one another as you walk along?” And they stood still, looking brokenhearted. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, answered Him, “Are you the only stranger visiting Jerusalem who is unaware of the things which have happened here in these [recent] days?” 19 He asked, “What things?” And they replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel and set our nation free. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. 22 And also some of the women among us shocked us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and they did not find His body. Then they came back, saying that they had even seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive! 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women had said, but they did not see Him.” 25 Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish men, and slow of heart to trust and believe in everything that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and [only then to] enter His glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and [throughout] all the [writings of the] prophets, He explained and interpreted for them the things referring to Himself [found] in all the Scriptures.
28 Then they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as if He were going farther. 29 But they urged Him [not to go on], saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening, and the day has just about ended.” So He went inside to stay with them. 30 And it happened that as He reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. 31 Then their eyes were [suddenly] opened [by God] and they [clearly] recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. 32 They said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking with us on the road and opening the Scriptures to us?” 33 They got up that very hour and went back to Jerusalem, and found the eleven [apostles] gathered together and those who were with them, 34 saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon [Peter]!” 35 They began describing in detail what had happened on the road, and how Jesus was recognized by them when He broke the bread.
Other Appearances
36 While they were talking about this, Jesus Himself [suddenly] stood among them and said to them, “Peace be to you.” 37 But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a spirit. 38 And He said, “Why are you troubled, and why are doubts rising in your hearts? 39 Look at [the marks in] My hands and My feet, [and see] that it is I Myself. Touch Me and see; a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”(E) 40 After saying this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 While they still did not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave Him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and He took it and ate it in front of them.(F)
44 Then He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you, everything which has been written about Me in the [c]Law of Moses and the [writings of the] Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He opened their minds to [help them] understand the Scriptures, 46 and said, “And so it is written, that the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,(G) 47 and that repentance [necessary] for forgiveness of sins would be preached in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 Listen carefully: I am sending the Promise of My Father [the Holy Spirit] upon you; but you are to remain in the city [of Jerusalem] until you are clothed (fully equipped) with power from on high.”(H)
The Ascension
50 Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifted up His hands and blessed them.(I) 51 While He was blessing them, He left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy [fully understanding that He lives and that He is the Son of God]; 53 and they were continually in the temple blessing and praising God.

1 Now the (A)[a]first day of the week [b]early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, and brought the odors which they had prepared, and certain women with them.
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher,
3 And went in, but found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 And it came to pass, that as they were amazed thereat, behold, two men suddenly stood by them in shining vestures.
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said to them, Why seek ye him that liveth, among the dead?
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember (B)how he spake unto you, when he was yet in Galilee,
7 Saying, that the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
8 And they remembered his words,
9 [c]And returned from the sepulcher, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the remnant.
10 Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women with them which told these things unto the Apostles.
11 But their words seemed unto them as a feigned thing, neither believed they them.
12 (C)[d]Then arose Peter and ran unto the sepulcher, and [e]looked in and saw the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
13 ¶ (D)[f]And behold two of them went that same day to a town which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs, called Emmaus.
14 And they talked together of all these things that were done.
15 And it came to pass, as they communed together, and reasoned, that Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
16 [g]But their eyes were holden, that they could not know him.
17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another as ye walk and are sad?
18 And [h]the one (named Cleopas) answered and said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass therein in these days?
19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Of Jesus of Nazareth, which was a Prophet, mighty indeed and in word before God, and all people,
20 [i]And how the high Priests, and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
21 But we trusted that it had been he that should have delivered Israel, and as touching all these things, today is the third day, that they were done.
22 Yea, and certain women among us made us astonied, which came early unto the sepulcher.
23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of Angels, which said, that he was alive.
24 Therefore certain of them which were with us, went to the sepulcher, and found it even so as the women had said, but him they saw not.
25 Then he said unto them, O fools and slow of heart to believe all that the Prophets have spoken!
26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
27 And he began at Moses, and at all the Prophets, and interpreted unto them in all the Scriptures the things which were written of him.
28 And they drew near unto the town, which they went to, but he made as though he would have gone further.
29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us, for it is towards night, and the day is far spent. So he went in to tarry with them.
30 And it came to pass, as he sat at table with them, he took the bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave it to them.
31 Then their eyes were opened, and they knew him: and he was [j]no more seen of them.
32 And they said between themselves, Did not our hearts burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and when he opened to us the Scriptures?
33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
34 Which said, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
35 Then they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in [k]breaking of bread.
36 ¶ (E)[l]And as they spake these things, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said unto them, Peace be to you.
37 But they were abashed and afraid, supposing that they had seen a spirit.
38 Then he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and wherefore do [m]doubts arise in your hearts?
39 Behold mine hands and my feet: for it is I myself: handle me, and see: for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
40 And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and feet.
41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb,
43 And he took it, and did eat before them.
44 [n]And he said unto them, These are the words, which I spake unto you while I was yet with you, that all must be fulfilled which are written of me in the Law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms.
45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures,
46 And said unto them, Thus is it written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead the third day,
47 And that repentance, and remission of sins should be preached in his Name among all nations, [o]beginning at Jerusalem.
48 Now ye are witnesses of these things.
49 And behold, I do send the (F)promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, [p]until ye be endued with power from on high.
50 [q]Afterward he lead them out into Bethany, and lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
51 And it came to pass, that as he blessed them, (G)he departed from them, and was carried up into heaven.
52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
53 And were continually in the Temple, praising, and lauding God. Amen.

- Luke 24:1 Poor silly women, even beside their expectation are chosen to be the first witnesses of the resurrection, that there might be no suspicion either of deceit or violence.

Jesus Has Risen(A)

Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:(E) 7 ‘The Son of Man(F) must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”(G) 8 Then they remembered his words.(H)

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.(AK) 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see;(AL) a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.(AM)
44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:(AN) Everything must be fulfilled(AO) that is written about me in the Law of Moses,(AP) the Prophets(AQ) and the Psalms.”(AR)
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer(AS) and rise from the dead on the third day,(AT) 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name(AU) to all nations,(AV) beginning at Jerusalem.(AW) 48 You are witnesses(AX) of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised;(AY) but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension of Jesus
50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany,(AZ) he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.(BA) 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple,(BB) praising God.
