Judas Iscariot becomes the tool of the authorities
22 1-2 Now as the feast of unleavened bread, called the Passover, was approaching, fear of the people made the chief priests and scribes try desperately to find a way of getting rid of Jesus.
3-6 Then a diabolical plan came into the mind of Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve. He went and discussed with the chief priests and officers a method of getting Jesus into their hands. They were delighted and arranged to pay him for it. He agreed, and began to look for a suitable opportunity for betrayal when there was no crowd present.
Jesus makes arrangements for his last Passover with his disciples
7-8 Then the day of unleavened bread arrived, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed and Jesus sent off Peter and John with the words, “Go and make all the preparations for us to eat the Passover.”
9 “Where would you like us to do this?” they asked.
10-12 And he replied, “Listen, just as you’re going into the city a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he is making for. Then say to the owner of the house, ‘The Master has this message for you—which is the room where my disciples and I may eat the Passover?’ And he will take you upstairs and show you a large room furnished for our needs. Make all the preparations there.”
13 So they went off and found everything exactly as he had told them it would be, and they made the Passover preparations.
14-16 Then, when the time came, he took his seat at table with the apostles, and spoke to them, “With all my heart I have longed to eat this Passover with you before the time comes for me to suffer. Believe me, I shall not eat the Passover again until all that it means is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17-18 Then taking a cup from them he thanked God, and said, “Take this and share it amongst yourselves, for I tell you I shall drink no more wine until the kingdom of God comes.”
The mysterious words which were remembered later
19 Then he took a loaf and after thanking God he broke it and gave it to them, with these words, “This is my body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me.”
20-22 So too, he gave them a cup after supper with the words, “This cup is the new agreement made in my own blood which is shed for you. Yet the hand of the man who is betraying me lies with mine at this moment on the table. The Son of Man goes on his appointed way: yet alas for the man by whom he is betrayed!”
Jesus again teaches humility
23 And at this they began to debate among themselves as to which of them would do this thing.
24 And then a dispute arose among them as to who should be considered the most important.
25-30 But Jesus said to them, “Among the heathen it is their kings who lord it over them, and their rulers are given the title of ‘benefactors.’ But it must not be so with you! Your greatest man must become like a junior and your leader must be a servant. Who is the greater, the man who sits down to dinner or the man who serves him? Obviously, the man who sits down to dinner—yet I am the one who is the servant among you. But you are the men who have stood by me in all that I have gone through, and as surely as my Father has given me my kingdom, so I give you the right to eat and drink at my table in that kingdom. Yes, you will sit on thrones and rule the twelve tribes of Israel!
The personal warning to Simon
31-32 “Oh Simon, Simon, do you know that Satan has asked to have you all to sift like wheat?—but I have prayed for you that you may not lose your faith. Yes, when you have turned back to me, you must strengthen these brothers of yours.”
33 Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison or even to die with you!”
34 “I tell you, Peter,” returned Jesus, “before the cock crows today you will deny three times that you know me!”
Jesus tells his disciples that the crisis has arrived
35 Then he continued to tell all, “That time when I sent you out without any purse or wallet or shoes—did you find you needed anything?” “No, not a thing,” they replied.
36-37 “But now,” Jesus continued, “if you have a purse or wallet, take it with you, and if you have no sword, sell your coat and buy one! For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me—‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’. So comes the end of what they wrote about me.”
38 Then the disciples said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And Jesus returned, “That is enough.”
39-40 Then he went out of the city and up on to the Mount of Olives, as he had often done before, with the disciples following him. And when he reached his usual place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not have to face temptation!”
41-42 Then he went off by himself, about a stone’s throw away, and falling on his knees, prayed in these words—“Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me—but it is not my will, but yours, that must be done.”
43-45 And an angel from Heaven appeared, strengthening him. He was in agony and prayed even more intensely so that his sweat was like great drops of blood falling to the ground. Then he got to his feet from his prayer and walking back to his disciples, he found them sleeping through sheer grief.
46 “Why are you sleeping?” he said to them. “You must get up and go on praying that you may not have to face temptation.”
The mob arrives and Judas betrays
47 While he was still speaking a crowd of people arrived, led by the man called Judas, one of the twelve. He stepped up to Jesus to kiss him.
48 “Judas, would you betray the son of Man with a kiss?” said Jesus to him.
49 And the disciples, seeing what was going to happen, cried, “Lord, shall we use our swords?”
50-51 And one of them did slash at the High Priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. But Jesus retorted, “That will do!”
52-53 And he touched his ear and healed him. Then he spoke to the chief priests, Temple officers and elders who were there to arrest him, “So you have come out with your swords and staves as if I were a bandit. Day after day I was with you in the Temple and you never laid a finger on me—but this is your hour and the power of darkness is yours!”
Jesus is arrested: Peter follows but denies his master three times
54-56 Then they arrested him and marched him off to the High Priest’s house. Peter followed at a distance, and sat down among some people who had lighted a fire in the middle of the courtyard and were sitting round it. A maid-servant saw him sitting there in the firelight, peered into his face, and said “This man was with him too.”
57 But he denied it and said, “I don’t know him, girl!”
58 A few minutes later someone else noticed Peter, and said, “You’re one of these men too.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”.
59 Then about an hour later someone else insisted, “I am convinced this fellow was with him. Why, he is a Galilean!”
60-62 “Man,” returned Peter, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the cock crew. The Lord turned his head and looked straight at Peter, and into his mind flashed the words that the Lord had said to him ... “You will disown me three times before the cock crows today.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.
63-65 Then the men who held Jesus made a great game of knocking him about. And they blindfolded him and asked him, “Now prophet, guess who hit you that time!” And that was only the beginning of the way they insulted him.
In the early morning Jesus is formally interrogated
66-67 Then when daylight came, the assembly of the elders of the people, which included both chief priests and scribes, met and marched him off to their own council. There they asked him, “If you really are Christ, tell us!”
68-69 “If I tell you, you will never believe me, and if I ask you a question, you will not answer me. But from now on the Son of Man will take his seat at the right hand of almighty God.”
70 Then they all said, “So you are the Son of God then?” “You are right; I am,” Jesus told them.
71 Then they said, “Why do we need to call any more witnesses, for we ourselves have heard this thing from his own lips?”

The Plot to Kill Jesus(A)
22 Now (B)the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover. 2 And (C)the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.
3 (D)Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the (E)twelve. 4 So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. 5 And they were glad, and (F)agreed to give him money. 6 So he promised and sought opportunity to (G)betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.
Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover
7 (H)Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be [a]killed. 8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”
9 So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”
10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”
13 So they went and (I)found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.
Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper
14 (J)When the hour had come, He sat down, and the [b]twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it (K)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for (L)I say to you, [c]I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 (M)And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My (N)body which is given for you; (O)do this in remembrance of Me.”
20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, (P)“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. 21 (Q)But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. 22 (R)And truly the Son of Man goes (S)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
23 (T)Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.
The Disciples Argue About Greatness
24 (U)Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 (V)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ 26 (W)But not so among you; on the contrary, (X)he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27 (Y)For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet (Z)I am among you as the One who serves.
28 “But you are those who have continued with Me in (AA)My trials. 29 And (AB)I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, 30 that (AC)you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, (AD)and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AE)
31 [d]And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, (AF)Satan has asked for you, that he may (AG)sift you as wheat. 32 But (AH)I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, (AI)strengthen your brethren.”
33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”
34 (AJ)Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”
Supplies for the Road
35 (AK)And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”
So they said, “Nothing.”
36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be [e]accomplished in Me: (AL)‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”
38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”
And He said to them, “It is enough.”
The Prayer in the Garden(AM)
39 (AN)Coming out, (AO)He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 (AP)When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
41 (AQ)And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless (AR)not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 [f]Then (AS)an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 (AT)And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why (AU)do you sleep? Rise and (AV)pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(AW)
47 And while He was still speaking, (AX)behold, a multitude; and he who was called (AY)Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a (AZ)kiss?”
49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And (BA)one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.
52 (BB)Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a (BC)robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the (BD)temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your (BE)hour, and the power of darkness.”
Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(BF)
54 (BG)Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. (BH)But Peter followed at a distance. 55 (BI)Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”
57 But he denied [g]Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
58 (BJ)And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”
But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59 (BK)Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a (BL)Galilean.”
60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”
Immediately, while he was still speaking, [h]the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then (BM)Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, (BN)“Before the rooster [i]crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62 So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Jesus Mocked and Beaten(BO)
63 (BP)Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and (BQ)beat Him. 64 [j]And having blindfolded Him, they (BR)struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” 65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(BS)
66 (BT)As soon as it was day, (BU)the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 (BV)“If You are the Christ, tell us.”
But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will (BW)by no means believe. 68 And if I [k]also ask you, you will by no means answer [l]Me or let Me go. 69 (BX)Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”

Who Is the Greatest?

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
39 (BB)And he came out and went, (BC)as was his custom, to (BD)the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 (BE)And when he came to (BF)the place, he said to them, (BG)“Pray that you may not (BH)enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and (BI)knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, (BJ)“Father, if you are willing, remove (BK)this cup from me. Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
47 (BP)While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called (BQ)Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike (BR)with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant[h] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (BS)officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When (BT)I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. Peter Denies Jesus
54 (BW)Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, (BX)and Peter was following at a distance. 55 (BY)And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of (BZ)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another (CA)insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and (CB)looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, (CC)“Before the rooster crows today, you will (CD)deny me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.
Jesus Is Mocked
63 (CE)Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. 64 (CF)They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, (CG)“Prophesy! (CH)Who is it that struck you?” 65 And they said many other things against him, (CI)blaspheming him.
Jesus Before the Council
66 (CJ)When day came, (CK)the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their (CL)council, and they (CM)said, 67 (CN)“If you are (CO)the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated (CP)at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 So they all said, “Are you (CQ)the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, (CR)“You say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”
