The Plot to Kill Jesus
22 The(A) Festival of Unleavened Bread,(B) which is called Passover,(C) was drawing near. 2 The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Him to death,(D) because they were afraid of the people.(E)
3 Then(F) Satan entered Judas,(G) called Iscariot,(H) who was numbered among the Twelve. 4 He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police(I) how he could hand Him over(J) to them. 5 They were glad and agreed to give him silver.[a] 6 So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray Him to them when the crowd was not present.
Preparation for Passover
7 Then(K) the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(L) 8 Jesus sent Peter and John,(M) saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so we can eat it.”
9 “Where do You want us to prepare it?” they asked Him.
10 “Listen,” He said to them, “when you’ve entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters. 11 Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, “Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs.(N) Make the preparations there.”
13 So they went and found it just as He had told them,(O) and they prepared the Passover.
The First Lord’s Supper
14 When(P) the hour came, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again[b] until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”(Q) 17 Then He took a cup,(R) and after giving thanks,(S) He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “This is My body,(T) which is given for you. Do this in remembrance(U) of Me.”
20 In the same way He also took the cup after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant(V) established by My blood;(W) it is shed for you.[c] 21 But(X) look, the hand of the one betraying Me is at the table with Me!(Y) 22 For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined,(Z) but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
23 So they began to argue(AA) among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do this thing.
The Dispute over Greatness
24 Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest.(AB) 25 But He said to them,(AC) “The kings of the Gentiles dominate them, and those who have authority over them are called[d] ‘Benefactors.’[e] 26 But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you must become like the youngest,(AD) and whoever leads, like the one serving. 27 For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn’t it the one at the table? But I am among you as the One who serves.(AE) 28 You are the ones who stood by Me in My trials.(AF) 29 I bestow on you a kingdom,(AG) just as My Father bestowed one on Me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom.(AH) And you will sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel.(AI)
Peter’s Denial Predicted
31 “Simon, Simon,[f] look out! Satan(AJ) has asked to sift you[g] like wheat.(AK) 32 But I have prayed(AL) for you[h] that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen(AM) your brothers.”
33 “Lord,”(AN) he told Him, “I’m ready to go with You both to prison and to death!”
34 “I tell you, Peter,” He said, “the rooster will not crow today until[i] you deny three times that you know Me!”
Be Ready for Trouble
35 He also said to them, “When I sent you out(AO) without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?”
“Not a thing,” they said.
36 Then He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn’t have a sword should sell his robe and buy one. 37 For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in Me: And He was counted among the outlaws.(AP)[j] Yes, what is written about Me is coming to its fulfillment.”(AQ)
38 “Lord,” they said, “look, here are two swords.”
“Enough of that!”[k] He told them.
The Prayer in the Garden
39 He went out and made His way(AR) as usual(AS) to the Mount of Olives,(AT) and the disciples followed Him. 40 When He reached the place,(AU) He told them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”(AV) 41 Then He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray,(AW) 42 “Father, if You are willing, take this cup(AX) away from Me—nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.”
[43 Then an angel from heaven(AY) appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 Being in anguish,(AZ) He prayed more fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.][l] 45 When He got up from prayer and came to the disciples, He found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief.[m] 46 “Why are you sleeping?” He asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation.”
The Judas Kiss
47 While(BA) He was still speaking, suddenly a mob was there, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss Him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?” 50 Then one of them struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus responded, “No more of this!”[n] And touching his ear, He healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal?[o] 53 Every day while I was with you in the temple complex,(BB) you never laid a hand on Me. But this is your hour(BC)—and the dominion of darkness.”(BD)
Peter Denies His Lord
54 They seized Him, led Him away, and brought Him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter(BE) was following at a distance. 55 They(BF) lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard(BG) and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. 56 When a servant saw him sitting in the firelight, and looked closely at him, she said, “This man was with Him too.”
57 But he denied it: “Woman, I don’t know Him!”
58 After a little while, someone else saw him and said, “You’re one of them too!”
“Man, I am not!” Peter said.
59 About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with Him, since he’s also a Galilean.”
60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter.(BH) So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”(BI) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Jesus Mocked and Beaten
63 The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating Him.(BJ) 64 After blindfolding Him, they kept[p] asking, “Prophesy! Who hit You?” 65 And they were saying many other blasphemous(BK) things against Him.
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin
66 When daylight came,(BL) the elders[q] of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes,(BM) convened and brought Him before their Sanhedrin.(BN) 67 They said,(BO) “If You are the Messiah, tell us.”
But He said to them, “If I do tell you, you will not believe. 68 And if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the Power of God.”(BP)
70 They all asked, “Are You, then, the Son of God?”(BQ)
And He said to them, “You say that I am.”(BR)
71 “Why do we need any more testimony,” they said, “since we’ve heard it ourselves from His mouth?”

English Standard Version
The Plot to Kill Jesus
22 (A)Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called (B)the Passover. 2 And the chief priests and the scribes (C)were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.
Judas to Betray Jesus
3 (D)Then (E)Satan entered into (F)Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 4 He went away and conferred with the chief priests and (G)officers how he might betray him to them. 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6 So he consented and sought an opportunity to (H)betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.
The Passover with the Disciples
7 (I)Then came (J)the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 So Jesus[a] sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” 9 They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, (K)‘The Teacher says to you, Where is (L)the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you (M)a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And they went and found it (N)just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
Institution of the Lord's Supper
14 (O)And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it[b] (P)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and (Q)when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 (R)For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine (S)until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 (T)And he took bread, and (U)when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, (V)“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, (W)“This cup that is poured out for you is (X)the new (Y)covenant in my blood.[c] 21 (Z)But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is (AA)with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes (AB)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.
Who Is the Greatest?
24 (AC)A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 (AD)And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles (AE)exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 (AF)But not so with you. Rather, let (AG)the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, (AH)one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But (AI)I am among you as the one who serves.
28 “You are those who have stayed with me (AJ)in my trials, 29 and (AK)I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 (AL)that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and (AM)sit on thrones judging (AN)the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial
31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (AO)Satan demanded to have you,[d] (AP)that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but (AQ)I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, (AR)strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter[e] said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both (AS)to prison and (AT)to death.” 34 (AU)Jesus[f] said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”
Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus
35 And he said to them, (AV)“When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that (AW)this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: (AX)‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For (AY)what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two (AZ)swords.” And he said to them, (BA)“It is enough.”
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
39 (BB)And he came out and went, (BC)as was his custom, to (BD)the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 (BE)And when he came to (BF)the place, he said to them, (BG)“Pray that you may not (BH)enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and (BI)knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, (BJ)“Father, if you are willing, remove (BK)this cup from me. (BL)Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him (BM)an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And (BN)being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.[g] 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and (BO)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
47 (BP)While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called (BQ)Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike (BR)with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant[h] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (BS)officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When (BT)I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is (BU)your hour, and (BV)the power of darkness.”
Peter Denies Jesus
54 (BW)Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, (BX)and Peter was following at a distance. 55 (BY)And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of (BZ)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another (CA)insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and (CB)looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, (CC)“Before the rooster crows today, you will (CD)deny me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.
Jesus Is Mocked
63 (CE)Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. 64 (CF)They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, (CG)“Prophesy! (CH)Who is it that struck you?” 65 And they said many other things against him, (CI)blaspheming him.
Jesus Before the Council
66 (CJ)When day came, (CK)the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their (CL)council, and they (CM)said, 67 (CN)“If you are (CO)the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated (CP)at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 So they all said, “Are you (CQ)the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, (CR)“You say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

New King James Version
The Plot to Kill Jesus(A)
22 Now (B)the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover. 2 And (C)the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.
3 (D)Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the (E)twelve. 4 So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. 5 And they were glad, and (F)agreed to give him money. 6 So he promised and sought opportunity to (G)betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.
Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover
7 (H)Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be [a]killed. 8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”
9 So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”
10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”
13 So they went and (I)found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.
Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper
14 (J)When the hour had come, He sat down, and the [b]twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it (K)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for (L)I say to you, [c]I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 (M)And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My (N)body which is given for you; (O)do this in remembrance of Me.”
20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, (P)“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. 21 (Q)But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. 22 (R)And truly the Son of Man goes (S)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
23 (T)Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.
The Disciples Argue About Greatness
24 (U)Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 (V)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ 26 (W)But not so among you; on the contrary, (X)he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27 (Y)For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet (Z)I am among you as the One who serves.
28 “But you are those who have continued with Me in (AA)My trials. 29 And (AB)I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, 30 that (AC)you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, (AD)and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AE)
31 [d]And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, (AF)Satan has asked for you, that he may (AG)sift you as wheat. 32 But (AH)I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, (AI)strengthen your brethren.”
33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”
34 (AJ)Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”
Supplies for the Road
35 (AK)And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”
So they said, “Nothing.”
36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be [e]accomplished in Me: (AL)‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”
38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”
And He said to them, “It is enough.”
The Prayer in the Garden(AM)
39 (AN)Coming out, (AO)He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 (AP)When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
41 (AQ)And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless (AR)not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 [f]Then (AS)an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 (AT)And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why (AU)do you sleep? Rise and (AV)pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(AW)
47 And while He was still speaking, (AX)behold, a multitude; and he who was called (AY)Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a (AZ)kiss?”
49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And (BA)one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.
52 (BB)Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a (BC)robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the (BD)temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your (BE)hour, and the power of darkness.”
Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(BF)
54 (BG)Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. (BH)But Peter followed at a distance. 55 (BI)Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”
57 But he denied [g]Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
58 (BJ)And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”
But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59 (BK)Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a (BL)Galilean.”
60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”
Immediately, while he was still speaking, [h]the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then (BM)Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, (BN)“Before the rooster [i]crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62 So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Jesus Mocked and Beaten(BO)
63 (BP)Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and (BQ)beat Him. 64 [j]And having blindfolded Him, they (BR)struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” 65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(BS)
66 (BT)As soon as it was day, (BU)the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 (BV)“If You are the Christ, tell us.”
But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will (BW)by no means believe. 68 And if I [k]also ask you, you will by no means answer [l]Me or let Me go. 69 (BX)Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”
So He said to them, (BY)“You rightly say that I am.”
71 (BZ)And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
