16 Jesus now told this story to his disciples: “A rich man hired an accountant to handle his affairs, but soon a rumor went around that the accountant was thoroughly dishonest.

“So his employer called him in and said, ‘What’s this I hear about your stealing from me? Get your report in order, for you are to be dismissed.’

“The accountant thought to himself, ‘Now what? I’m through here, and I haven’t the strength to go out and dig ditches, and I’m too proud to beg. I know just the thing! And then I’ll have plenty of friends to take care of me when I leave!’

5-6 “So he invited each one who owed money to his employer to come and discuss the situation. He asked the first one, ‘How much do you owe him?’ ‘My debt is 850 gallons of olive oil,’ the man replied. ‘Yes, here is the contract you signed,’ the accountant told him. ‘Tear it up and write another one for half that much!’

“‘And how much do you owe him?’ he asked the next man. ‘A thousand bushels of wheat,’ was the reply. ‘Here,’ the accountant said, ‘take your note and replace it with one for only 800 bushels!’

“The rich man had to admire the rascal for being so shrewd.[a] And it is true that the citizens of this world are more clever in dishonesty than the godly are. But shall I tell you to act that way, to buy friendship through cheating? Will this ensure your entry into an everlasting home in heaven?[b] 10 No! For unless you are honest in small matters, you won’t be in large ones. If you cheat even a little, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. 11 And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? 12 And if you are not faithful with other people’s money, why should you be entrusted with money of your own?

13 “For neither you nor anyone else can serve two masters. You will hate one and show loyalty to the other, or else the other way around—you will be enthusiastic about one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

14 The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money, naturally scoffed at all this.

15 Then he said to them, “You wear a noble, pious expression in public, but God knows your evil hearts. Your pretense brings you honor from the people, but it is an abomination in the sight of God. 16 Until John the Baptist began to preach, the laws of Moses and the messages of the prophets were your guides. But John introduced the Good News that the Kingdom of God would come soon. And now eager multitudes are pressing in. 17 But that doesn’t mean that the Law has lost its force in even the smallest point. It is as strong and unshakable as heaven and earth.

18 “So anyone who divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”

19 “There was a certain rich man,” Jesus said, “who was splendidly clothed and lived each day in mirth and luxury. 20 One day Lazarus, a diseased beggar, was laid at his door. 21 As he lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores. 22 Finally the beggar died and was carried by the angels to be with Abraham in the place of the righteous dead.[c] The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and his soul went into hell.[d] There, in torment, he saw Lazarus in the far distance with Abraham.

24 “‘Father Abraham,’ he shouted, ‘have some pity! Send Lazarus over here if only to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in these flames.’

25 “But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted and you are in anguish. 26 And besides, there is a great chasm separating us, and anyone wanting to come to you from here is stopped at its edge; and no one over there can cross to us.’

27 “Then the rich man said, ‘O Father Abraham, then please send him to my father’s home— 28 for I have five brothers—to warn them about this place of torment lest they come here when they die.’

29 “But Abraham said, ‘The Scriptures have warned them again and again. Your brothers can read them any time they want to.’

30 “The rich man replied, ‘No, Father Abraham, they won’t bother to read them. But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will turn from their sins.’

31 “But Abraham said, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t listen even though someone rises from the dead.’”[e]

Luke 16:9 Will this ensure your entry into an everlasting home in heaven? literally, and probably ironically, “Make to yourselves friends by means of the mammon of unrighteousness; that when it shall fail you, they may receive you into the eternal tabernacles.” Some commentators would interpret this to mean: “Use your money for good, so that it will be waiting to befriend you when you get to heaven.” But this would imply the end justifies the means, an unbiblical idea.

Und er rief ihn zu sich und sprach zu ihm: Was höre ich da von dir? Lege Rechenschaft ab von deiner Verwaltung; denn du kannst künftig nicht mehr Haushalter sein!

Da sprach der Haushalter bei sich selbst: Was soll ich tun, da mein Herr mir die Verwaltung nimmt? Graben kann ich nicht; zu betteln schäme ich mich.

Ich weiß, was ich tun will, damit sie mich, wenn ich von der Verwaltung entfernt bin, in ihre Häuser aufnehmen!

Und er rief jeden von den Schuldnern seines Herrn zu sich und sprach zu dem ersten: Wie viel bist du meinem Herrn schuldig?

Der aber sprach: 100 Bat Öl. Und er sprach zu ihm: Nimm deinen Schuldschein, setze dich und schreibe schnell 50!

Danach sprach er zu einem anderen: Du aber, wie viel bist du schuldig? Der aber sagte: 100 Kor Weizen. Und er sprach zu ihm: Nimm deinen Schuldschein und schreibe 80!

Und der Herr lobte den ungerechten Haushalter, dass er klug gehandelt habe.[a] Denn die Kinder dieser Weltzeit sind ihrem Geschlecht gegenüber klüger als die Kinder des Lichts.

Auch ich sage euch: Macht euch Freunde mit dem ungerechten Mammon, damit, wenn ihr Mangel habt, sie euch aufnehmen in die ewigen Hütten!

Ermahnung zum treuen Dienen

10 Wer im Geringsten treu ist, der ist auch im Großen treu; und wer im Geringsten ungerecht ist, der ist auch im Großen ungerecht.

11 Wenn ihr nun mit dem ungerechten Mammon nicht treu wart, wer wird euch das Wahre anvertrauen?

12 Und wenn ihr mit dem Gut eines anderen nicht treu wart, wer wird euch das Eure geben?

13 Kein Knecht kann zwei Herren dienen; denn entweder wird er den einen hassen und den anderen lieben, oder er wird dem einen anhängen und den anderen verachten. Ihr könnt nicht Gott dienen und dem Mammon!

14 Das alles hörten aber auch die Pharisäer, die geldgierig waren, und sie verspotteten ihn.

15 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Ihr seid es, die sich selbst rechtfertigen vor den Menschen, aber Gott kennt eure Herzen; denn was bei den Menschen hoch angesehen ist, das ist ein Gräuel vor Gott.

Das Gesetz und das Reich Gottes

16 Das Gesetz und die Propheten [weissagen] bis auf Johannes; von da an wird das Reich Gottes verkündigt, und jedermann drängt sich mit Gewalt hinein.

17 Es ist aber leichter, dass Himmel und Erde vergehen, als dass ein einziges Strichlein des Gesetzes falle.

Ehebruch und Ehescheidung

18 Jeder, der sich von seiner Frau scheidet und eine andere heiratet, der bricht die Ehe, und jeder, der eine von ihrem Mann Geschiedene heiratet, der bricht die Ehe.

Der reiche Mann und der arme Lazarus

19 Es war aber ein reicher Mann, der kleidete sich in Purpur und kostbare Leinwand und lebte alle Tage herrlich und in Freuden.

20 Es war aber ein Armer namens Lazarus, der lag vor dessen Tür voller Geschwüre

21 und begehrte, sich zu sättigen von den Brosamen, die vom Tisch des Reichen fielen; und es kamen sogar Hunde und leckten seine Geschwüre.

22 Es geschah aber, dass der Arme starb und von den Engeln in Abrahams Schoß getragen wurde. Es starb aber auch der Reiche und wurde begraben.

23 Und als er im Totenreich[b] seine Augen erhob, da er Qualen litt, sieht er den Abraham von ferne und Lazarus in seinem Schoß.

24 Und er rief und sprach: Vater Abraham, erbarme dich über mich und sende Lazarus, dass er die Spitze seines Fingers ins Wasser tauche und meine Zunge kühle; denn ich leide Pein in dieser Flamme!

25 Abraham aber sprach: Sohn, bedenke, dass du dein Gutes empfangen hast in deinem Leben und Lazarus gleichermaßen das Böse; nun wird er getröstet, du aber wirst gepeinigt.

26 Und zu alledem ist zwischen uns und euch eine große Kluft befestigt, sodass die, welche von hier zu euch hinübersteigen wollen, es nicht können, noch die, welche von dort zu uns herüberkommen wollen.

27 Da sprach er: So bitte ich dich, Vater, dass du ihn in das Haus meines Vaters sendest —

28 denn ich habe fünf Brüder —, dass er sie warnt, damit nicht auch sie an diesen Ort der Qual kommen!

29 Abraham spricht zu ihm: Sie haben Mose und die Propheten; auf diese sollen sie hören!

30 Er aber sprach: Nein, Vater Abraham, sondern wenn jemand von den Toten zu ihnen ginge, so würden sie Buße tun!

31 Er aber sprach zu ihm: Wenn sie auf Mose und die Propheten nicht hören, so würden sie sich auch nicht überzeugen lassen, wenn einer aus den Toten auferstände!

16 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.

And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.

Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.

I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.

So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?

And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.

Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.

And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?

13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

14 And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.

15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.

17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.

18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.

19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:

28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

The Parable of the Shrewd Manager

16 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.(A) So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’

“The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’

“So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’

“‘Nine hundred gallons[a] of olive oil,’ he replied.

“The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.’

“Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’

“‘A thousand bushels[b] of wheat,’ he replied.

“He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’

“The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world(B) are more shrewd(C) in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.(D) I tell you, use worldly wealth(E) to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.(F)

10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much,(G) and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth,(H) who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

13 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”(I)

14 The Pharisees, who loved money,(J) heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.(K) 15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves(L) in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts.(M) What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

Additional Teachings

16 “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John.(N) Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached,(O) and everyone is forcing their way into it. 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.(P)

18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(Q)

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.(R) 20 At his gate was laid a beggar(S) named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table.(T) Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham,(U) have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’(V)

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things,(W) but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.(X) 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them,(Y) so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses(Z) and the Prophets;(AA) let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’(AB) he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
