Sending Out the Seventy-Two

10 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two[a] others, and he sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 He told them,(A) “The harvest(B) is abundant, but the workers(C) are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.(D) 3 Now go; I’m sending you out like lambs among wolves.(E) 4 Don’t carry a money-bag,(F) traveling bag,(G) or sandals; (H) don’t greet anyone along the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace(I) to this household.’ 6 If a person of peace is there, your peace(J) will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages.(K) Don’t move from house to house. 8 When you enter any town, and they welcome you, eat the things set before you.(L) 9 Heal the sick(M) who are there, and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(N) has come near(O) you.’ 10 When you enter any town, and they don’t welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘We are wiping off even the dust of your town that clings to our feet as a witness against you.(P) Know this for certain: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, on that day(Q) it will be more tolerable for Sodom(R) than for that town.(S)

Unrepentant Towns

13 “Woe(T) to you,(U) Chorazin!(V) Woe to you, Bethsaida!(W) For if the miracles(X) that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,(Y) they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.(Z) 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment(AA) than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,(AB) will you be exalted to heaven?(AC) No, you will go down to Hades.(AD) 16 Whoever listens to you listens to me.(AE) Whoever rejects you rejects me.(AF) And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”(AG)

The Return of the Seventy-Two

17 The seventy-two[b](AH) returned with joy, saying,(AI) “Lord, even the demons(AJ) submit to us in your name.”(AK)

18 He said to them, “I watched Satan(AL) fall from heaven like lightning.(AM) 19 Look, I have given you the authority(AN) to trample(AO) on snakes(AP) and scorpions(AQ) and over all the power of the enemy; (AR) nothing at all will harm you.(AS) 20 However, don’t rejoice that[c] the spirits (AT) submit to you,(AU) but rejoice that your names are written(AV) in heaven.”

The Son Reveals the Father

21 At that time(AW) he[d] rejoiced in the Holy[e] Spirit(AX) and said, “I praise[f] you, Father,(AY) Lord of heaven and earth,(AZ) because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent(BA) and revealed them to infants.(BB) Yes, Father, because this was your good pleasure.[g](BC) 22 All things have[h] been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son desires[i] to reveal him.”(BD)

23 Then turning to his disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see the things you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things you see but didn’t see them; to hear the things you hear but didn’t hear them.”(BE)

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 Then(BF) an expert in the law(BG) stood up to test(BH) him, saying, “Teacher,(BI) what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (BJ)

26 “What is written in the law?” he asked him. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “Love the Lord your God(BK) with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,”(BL) and “your neighbor as yourself.”[j](BM)

28 “You’ve answered correctly,” he told him. “Do this and you will live.”(BN)

29 But wanting to justify himself,(BO) he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (BP)

30 Jesus took up the question and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan(BQ) on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion.(BR) 34 He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil(BS) and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day[k] he took out two denarii,[l] gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’

36 “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”

37 “The one who showed mercy(BT) to him,” he said.

Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”

Martha and Mary

38 While they were traveling, he entered a village, and a woman named Martha(BU) welcomed him into her home.[m] 39 She had a sister named Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s[n] feet(BV) and was listening to what he said.[o] 40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, “Lord, don’t you care(BW) that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.”[p](BX)

41 The Lord[q] answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things,(BY) 42 but one thing is necessary.[r](BZ) Mary has made the right choice,[s] and it will not be taken away from her.”

2 "מאחר שהקציר רב והפועלים מעטים," אמר להם ישוע, "התחננו לאלוהים שישלח פועלים נוספים לעזור לכם בעבודתכם למענו. 3 לכו עתה וזכרו שאני שולח אתכם כשלוח כבשים בין זאבים. 4 אל תיקחו אתכם כסף, חפצים אישיים ואף לא זוג נעליים נוסף, ואל תעצרו בדרך לשוחח עם איש.

5 "בכניסתכם לכל בית ברכו אותו תחילה לשלום. 6 אם באותו בית גר אדם אוהב שלום, הברכה תתקיים, ואם אין הוא אוהב שלום באותו בית – הברכה תשוב אליכם.

7 "בבואכם אל כפר או עיר אל תעברו מבית מארח אחד לאחר, אלא התארחו בבית אחד בלבד, ואל תהססו לאכול ולשתות כל מה שמגישים לכם, כי הפועל ראוי לשכרו.

8 בכל עיר שבה מקבלים אתכם בשמחה איכלו את המוגש לפניכם, 9 רפאו את החולים ואמרו להם: 'מלכות האלוהים קרובה אליכם.'

10 בעיר שבה לא מקבלים אתכם צאו לרחובות וקראו: 11 'כמחאה על התנהגותכם אנחנו מנערים את אבק עירכם שדבק ברגלינו, אולם דעו לכם שאכן קרובה מלכות האלוהים!' 12 אני אומר לכם שאפילו לסדום המרושעת יהיה קל יותר ביום הדין מאשר לעיר הזאת.

13 אוי ואבוי לכן, כורזין ובית-צידה! אילו חוללתי בצור ובצידון את הנסים שחוללתי בקרבכן, מזמן היו שם כולם חוזרים בתשובה ולובשים שק ואפר לאות חרטה. 14 כן, צור וצידון תקבלנה עונש קל משלכן ביום הדין! 15 ואתם, אנשי כפר-נחום, החושבים אתם שירוממו אתכם לשמים? לגיהינום תרדו!" 16 ישוע המשיך לדבר אל התלמידים: "מי ששומע לכם שומע לי; מי שמזלזל בכם מזלזל בי; ומי שמזלזל בי מזלזל באלוהים אשר שלח אותי."

17 כעבור זמן-מה חזרו שבעים השליחים אל ישוע ודיווחו לו בשמחה: "אדוננו, אפילו השדים נכנעים לנו כשאנו מצווים עליהם בשמך!" 18 "אכן," ענה ישוע, "ראיתי את השטן נופל מן השמים כברק! 19 באמת הענקתי לכם סמכות וכוח להתגבר על כל כוחות האויב, ולרמוס נחשים ועקרבים. דבר לא יוכל לפגוע בכם! 20 אף-על-פי-כן עליכם לשמוח לא משום שאתם יכולים להתגבר על השדים, אלא משום ששמותיכם כתובים בשמים!"

21 לאחר מכן נמלא ישוע שמחת רוח הקודש וקרא: "אבי, אדון השמים והארץ, אני מודה לך על שהסתרת דברים אלה מפני חכמים ומשכילים, וגילית אותם לאנשים פשוטים שבוטחים בך כמו ילדים. כן, תודה לך אבי, מפני שכך רצית. 22 הכול נמסר לי מאבי; אף אחד אינו מכיר ממש את הבן, מלבד האב, ואף אחד אינו מכיר ממש את האב, מלבד הבן ואלה שהוא בוחר לגלות להם את האב."

23 ישוע פנה אל תלמידיו ואמר להם בשקט: "זכות גדולה נפלה בחלקכם, שיכולים אתם לראות את אשר ראיתם. 24 נביאים ומלכים רבים השתוקקו לראות ולשמוע את אשר אתם ראיתם ושמעתם, אולם הם לא יכלו."

25 פעם רצה אחד מחכמי-התורה לנסות את ישוע. "רבי," שאל החכם, "מה עלי לעשות כדי לזכות בחיי נצח?"

26 "מה אומרת על כך התורה?" השיב לו ישוע בשאלה.

27 "התורה אומרת: 'ואהבת את ה' אלוהיך בכל לבבך, ובכל נפשך ובכל מאודך; ואהבת לרעך כמוך'," השיב החכם.

28 "נכון מאוד," אישר ישוע. 'אם תקיים מצוות אלה תזכה בחיי נצח."

29 החכם רצה להצדיק את רגשותיו (מפני שלא אהב אנשים מסוימים), ולכן שאל: "מיהו רעי?" 30 ישוע השיב במשל: "יהודי אחד הלך בדרך מירושלים ליריחו והותקף על-ידי שודדים. הם הפשיטו את בגדיו מעליו, גזלו את כספו, הכו אותו באכזריות והשאירו אותו בצד הדרך פצוע קשות. 31 במקרה עבר שם כהן אחד, אולם בראותו את הפצוע עבר לצדו השני של השביל. 32 עבר במקום גם איש משבט לוי. הוא הביט בפצוע המוטל בצד הדרך, אולם המשיך בדרכו. 33 הזדמן למקום שומרוני אחד, ובראותו את הפצוע נמלא רחמים. 34 השומרוני ניגש אל הפצוע, משח את פצעיו וחבש אותם, לאחר מכן הרכיב אותו על חמורו והביאו לאכסניה, שם טיפל בו והאכיל אותו. 35 למחרת, לפני שהמשיך בדרכו, שילם השומרוני סכום כסף לבעל האכסניה ואמר: 'דאג בבקשה לכל מחסורו של הפצוע, ואם לא יספיק הכסף – אשלם את החסר בשובי.'

36 "מי מהשלושה היה לדעתך רע טוב לאיש הפצוע?"

37 "האדם שריחם עליו," השיב החכם.

"נכון," הסכים איתו ישוע. "לך ועשה כמוהו."

38 ישוע ותלמידיו המשיכו בדרכם, וכשהגיעו לאחד הכפרים הזמינה אותם אישה בשם מרתא להתארח בביתה. 39 אחותה מרים התיישבה על הארץ לרגלי ישוע והקשיבה לדבריו.

40 מרתא חשה לחץ מהעבודה שבהכנת ארוחה גדולה לכולם, ומשום כך פרצה לחדר וקראה: "נכון שאין זה הוגן שאחותי תשאיר לי את כל העבודה? אמור לה בבקשה שתבוא לעזור לי."

41 "מרתא, יקירתי," השיב לה האדון, "את דואגת לכל כך הרבה דברים. עליך לדאוג לדבר אחד בלבד. מרים בחרה בדבר האחד הזה אשר לא יילקח ממנה."

10 After these things the Lord appointed [a]seventy others also, and (A)sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. 2 Then He said to them, (B)“The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore (C)pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3 Go your way; (D)behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. 4 (E)Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and (F)greet no one along the road. 5 (G)But whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you. 7 (H)And remain in the same house, (I)eating and drinking such things as they give, for (J)the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. 9 (K)And heal the sick there, and say to them, (L)‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 (M)‘The very dust of your city which clings to [b]us we wipe off against you. Woe to the Impenitent Cities(O)

13 (P)“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! (Q)For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 (R)And you, Capernaum, [d]who are (S)exalted to heaven, (T)will be brought down to Hades. 16 (U)He who hears you hears Me, (V)he who rejects you rejects Me, and (W)he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”

The Seventy Return with Joy

17 Then (X)the [e]seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”

18 And He said to them, (Y)“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, (Z)I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but [f]rather rejoice because (AA)your names are written in heaven.”

Jesus Rejoices in the Spirit(AB)

21 (AC)In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 22 (AD)All[g] things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and (AE)no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, (AF)“Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you (AG)that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”

38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named (AS)Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, (AT)who also (AU)sat at [k]Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

41 And [l]Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But (AV)one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
