The Dedication to Theophilus
1┬аMany have undertaken to compile a narrative about the events that have been fulfilled[a] among us,(A) 2┬аjust as the original eyewitnesses(B) and servants of the word(C) handed them down to us. 3┬аSo it also seemed good to me, since I have carefully investigated everything from the very first, to write to you in an orderly sequence, most honorable(D) Theophilus,(E) 4┬аso that you may know the certainty of the things about which you have been instructed.[b](F)
Gabriel Predicts JohnтАЩs Birth
5┬аIn the days of King Herod(G) of Judea, there was a priest of AbijahтАЩs division(H) named Zechariah. His wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6┬аBoth were righteous in GodтАЩs sight,(I) living without blame(J) according to all the commands and requirements of the Lord. 7┬аBut they had no children because Elizabeth could not conceive, and both of them were well along in years.(K)
8┬аWhen his division was on duty(L) and he was serving as priest before God, 9┬аit happened that he was chosen by lot,(M) according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense.(N) 10┬аAt the hour of incense the whole assembly of the people was praying outside. 11┬аAn angel of the Lord(O) appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense.(P) 12┬аWhen Zechariah saw him, he was terrified and overcome with fear.(Q) 13┬аBut the angel said to him, тАЬDo not be afraid,(R) Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard.(S) Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John.(T) 14┬аThere will be joy and delight for you, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15┬аFor he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer.(U) He will be filled with the Holy Spirit(V) while still in his motherтАЩs womb.(W) 16┬аHe will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.(X) 17┬аAnd he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children,(Y) and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.тАЭ(Z)
18┬атАЬHow can I know this?тАЭ Zechariah asked the angel. тАЬFor I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.тАЭ
19┬аThe angel answered him, тАЬI am Gabriel,(AA) who stands in the presence of God,(AB) and I was sent to speak to you and tell you this good news. 20┬аNow listen. You will become silent and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.тАЭ
21┬аMeanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary. 22┬аWhen he did come out, he could not speak to them. Then they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He was making signs to them(AC) and remained speechless. 23┬аWhen the days of his ministry were completed, he went back home.
24┬аAfter these days his wife Elizabeth conceived and kept herself in seclusion for five months. She said, 25┬атАЬThe Lord has done this for me. He has looked with favor in these days to take away my disgrace(AD) among the people.тАЭ
Gabriel Predicts JesusтАЩs Birth
26┬аIn the sixth month, the angel Gabriel(AE) was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,(AF) 27┬аto a virgin engaged[c](AG) to a man named Joseph, of the house of David.(AH) The virginтАЩs name was Mary. 28┬аAnd the angel came to her and said, тАЬGreetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you.тАЭ[d] 29┬аBut she was deeply troubled(AI) by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. 30┬аThen the angel told her, тАЬDo not be afraid, Mary,(AJ) for you have found favor with God.(AK) 31┬аNow listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.(AL) 32┬аHe will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High,(AM) and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.(AN) 33┬аHe will reign over the house of Jacob(AO) forever, and his kingdom will have no end.тАЭ (AP)
34┬аMary asked the angel, тАЬHow can this be, since I have not had sexual relations with a man?тАЭ [e]
35┬аThe angel replied to her, тАЬThe Holy Spirit will come upon you,(AQ) and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.(AR) 36┬аAnd consider your relative ElizabethтАФeven she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called childless. 37┬аFor nothing will be impossible with God.тАЭ(AS)
38┬атАЬSee, I am the LordтАЩs servant,тАЭ said Mary. тАЬMay it happen to me as you have said.тАЭ Then the angel left her.
MaryтАЩs Visit to Elizabeth
39┬аIn those days Mary set out and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judah 40┬аwhere she entered ZechariahтАЩs house and greeted Elizabeth. 41┬аWhen Elizabeth heard MaryтАЩs greeting, the baby leaped inside her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(AT) 42┬аThen she exclaimed with a loud cry, тАЬBlessed are you among women, and your child will be blessed![f] 43┬аHow could this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44┬аFor you see, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped for joy inside me. 45┬аBlessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill what he has spoken to her!тАЭ
MaryтАЩs Praise
46┬аAnd Mary said:
My soul magnifies the Lord,(AU)
47┬аand my spirit rejoices(AV) in God my Savior,(AW)
48┬аbecause he has looked with favor
on the humble condition of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations
will call me blessed,(AX)
49┬аbecause the Mighty One(AY)
has done great things for me,(AZ)
and his name(BA) is holy.
50┬аHis mercy is from generation to generation(BB)
on those who fear him.
51┬аHe has done a mighty deed with his arm;(BC)
he has scattered the proud
because of the thoughts of their hearts;(BD)
52┬аhe has toppled the mighty from their thrones
and exalted the lowly.(BE)
53┬аHe has satisfied the hungry with good things(BF)
and sent the rich away empty.
54┬аHe has helped his servant Israel,
remembering his mercy
55┬аto Abraham and his descendants[g] forever,(BG)
just as he spoke to our ancestors.
56┬аAnd Mary stayed with her about three months; then she returned to her home.
The Birth and Naming of John
57┬аNow the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she had a son. 58┬аThen her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her his great mercy,(BH) and they rejoiced with her.
59┬аWhen they came to circumcise the child on the eighth day,(BI) they were going to name him Zechariah, after his father. 60┬аBut his mother responded, тАЬNo. He will be called John.тАЭ(BJ)
61┬аThen they said to her, тАЬNone of your relatives has that name.тАЭ 62┬аSo they motioned to his father(BK) to find out what he wanted him to be called. 63┬аHe asked for a writing tablet and wrote, тАЬHis name is John.тАЭ And they were all amazed. 64┬аImmediately his mouth was opened(BL) and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. 65┬аFear came on all those who lived around them, and all these things were being talked about throughout the hill country of Judea. 66┬аAll who heard about him(BM) took it to heart, saying, тАЬWhat then will this child become?тАЭ For, indeed, the LordтАЩs hand was with him.
ZechariahтАЩs Prophecy
67┬аThen his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit(BN) and prophesied:(BO)
68┬аBlessed is the Lord, the God of Israel,(BP)
because he has visited
and provided redemption for his people.(BQ)
69┬аHe has raised up a horn of salvation for us(BR)
in the house of his servant David,(BS)
70┬аjust as he spoke by the mouth
of his holy prophets in ancient times;(BT)
71┬аsalvation from our enemies
and from the hand of those who hate us.
72┬аHe has dealt mercifully with our ancestors(BU)
and remembered his holy covenant(BV)тАФ
73┬аthe oath that he swore to our father Abraham,(BW)
to grant that we,
74┬аhaving been rescued
from the hand of our enemies,
would serve him without fear
75┬аin holiness and righteousness
in his presence all our days.
76┬аAnd you, child, will be called
a prophet of the Most High,(BX)
for you will go before the Lord
to prepare his ways,(BY)
77┬аto give his people knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins.(BZ)
78┬аBecause of our GodтАЩs merciful compassion,
the dawn from on high(CA) will visit us
79┬аto shine on those who live in darkness
and the shadow of death,(CB)
to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80┬аThe child grew up and became strong in spirit,[h](CC) and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

Wycliffe Bible
[1┬аForsooth for many men endeavoured to ordain the telling of things, which be filled in us,
2┬аas they that saw at the beginning, and were ministers of the word, betaken,
3┬аit is seen also to me, having from the beginning all things diligently by order, to write to thee, thou best Theophilus,
4┬аthat thou know the truth of those words, of which thou art learned.][a]
5┬аIn the days of Herod, king of Judaea, there was a priest [there was some priest], Zacharias by name, of the sort of Abia, and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6┬аAnd [they] both were just before God, going in all the commandments and justifyings of the Lord, without plaint.
7┬аAnd they had no child, for [that] Elisabeth was barren, and both were of great age in their days [and both had gone far in their days].
8┬аAnd it befell [Soothly it was done], that when Zacharias should do the office of priesthood, in the order of his course before God,
9┬аafter the custom of the priesthood, he went forth by lot [by sort he went forth], and entered into the temple [of the Lord], to incense.
10┬аAnd all the multitude of the people was withoutforth, and prayed in the hour of incensing [praying in the hour of incense].
11┬аAnd an angel of the Lord appeared to him, and stood on the right half of the altar of incense [standing on the right half of the altar of incense].
12┬аAnd Zacharias seeing was afraid [And Zacharias seeing was distroubled], and dread fell upon him.
13┬аAnd the angel said to him, Zacharias, dread thou not; for thy prayer is heard, and Elisabeth, thy wife, shall bear to thee a son, and his name shall be called John.
14┬аAnd joy and gladding shall be to thee; and many shall have joy in his nativity, or birth.
15┬аFor he shall be great before the Lord, and he shall not drink wine nor cider, and he shall be full-filled with the Holy Ghost [and he shall be filled of the Holy Ghost] yet from his mother's womb.
16┬аAnd he shall convert many of the children of Israel to their Lord God; [And he shall convert many of the sons of Israel to the Lord God of them;]
17┬аand he shall go before him in the spirit and virtue of Elias; and he shall turn the hearts of the fathers into the sons [and shall turn the hearts of the fathers into the sons], and men out of belief to the prudence of just men, to make ready a perfect people to the Lord.
18┬аAnd Zacharias said to the angel, Whereof shall I know this? for I am old, and my wife hath gone far in her days.
19┬аAnd the angel answered, and said to him [And the angel answering said to him], For I am Gabriel, that stand nigh before God; and I am sent to thee to speak, and to evangelize to thee these things [and to evangelize, or tell, to thee these things].
20┬аAnd lo! thou shalt be dumb, and thou shalt not be able to speak till into the day, in which these things shall be done; for thou hast not believed to my words, which shall be fulfilled in their time.
21┬аAnd the people was abiding Zacharias, and they wondered, that he tarried in the temple.
22┬аAnd he went out, and might not speak to them, and they knew that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he beckoned to them, and dwelled still dumb.
23┬аAnd it was done, when the days of his office were fulfilled, he went into his house.
24┬аAnd after these days Elisabeth, his wife, conceived, and hid her(self) five months, and said [saying],
25┬аFor so the Lord did to me in the days, in which he beheld, to take away my reproof among men.
26┬аBut in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, whose name was Nazareth [to which the name Nazareth],
27┬аto a maiden [to a virgin], wedded to a man, whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the name of the maiden was Mary.
28┬аAnd the angel entered to her, and said, Hail, full of grace; the Lord is with thee; blessed be thou among women.
29┬аAnd when she had heard, she was troubled in his word, and thought what manner salutation this was.
30┬аAnd the angel said to her, Dread thou not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.
31┬аLo! thou shalt conceive in [the] womb, and shalt bear a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus.
32┬аThis shall be great [He shall be great], and he shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give to him the seat of David, his father,
33┬аand he shall reign in the house of Jacob without end [and he shall reign in the house of Jacob into without end], and of his realm shall be none end.
34┬аAnd Mary said to the angel, On what manner shall this thing be done, for I know not man?
35┬аAnd the angel answered, and said to her, The Holy Ghost shall come from above into thee, and the virtue of the Highest shall overshadow thee; and therefore that holy thing that shall be born of thee, shall be called the Son of God.
36┬аAnd lo! Elisabeth, thy cousin, and she also hath conceived a son in her old (age), and this month is the sixth to her that is called barren;
37┬аfor every word shall not be impossible with God.
38┬аAnd Mary said, Lo! the handmaid of the Lord[b]; be it done to me after thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39┬аAnd Mary rose up in those days, and went with haste into the mountains, into a city of Judaea. [Soothly Mary rising up in those days, went with haste into the hilly places, into a city of Judaea.]
40┬аAnd she entered into the house of Zacharias, and greeted Elisabeth.
41┬аAnd it was done, as Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the young child in her womb gladded. And Elisabeth was full-filled with the Holy Ghost [And Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost],
42┬аand cried with a great voice, and said, Blessed be thou among women, and blessed be the fruit of thy womb.
43┬аAnd whereof is this thing to me, that the mother of my Lord come to me?
44┬аFor lo! as the voice of thy salutation was made in mine ears, the young child gladded in joy in my womb [the young child gladded with joy in my womb].
45┬аAnd blessed be thou, that hast believed, for those things that be said of the Lord to thee [for those things that be said to thee from the Lord], shall be perfectly done.
46┬аAnd Mary said, My soul magnifieth the Lord,
47┬аand my spirit hath gladded in God, mine health [mine health-giver].
48┬аFor he hath beheld the meekness of his handmaiden. For lo! of this all generations shall say that I am blessed.[c]
49┬аFor he that is mighty hath done to me great things, and his name is holy.
50┬аAnd his mercy is from kindred into kindreds [from kindreds into kindreds], to men that dread him.
51┬аHe made might in his arm, he scattered proud men with the thought of his heart.
52┬аHe put down mighty men from their seats, and enhanced meek men.
53┬аHe hath full-filled hungry men with goods [He hath filled hungry men with good things], and he hath left rich men void.
54┬аHe, having mind of his mercy, took Israel, his child;
55┬аas he hath spoken to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed, into worlds.
56┬аAnd Mary dwelled with her, as it were three months [Forsooth Mary dwelled with her as three months], and turned again into her house.
57┬аBut the time of bearing child was fulfilled to Elisabeth, and she bare a son.
58┬аAnd the neighbours and the cousins of her heard, that the Lord had magnified his mercy with her; and they thanked him [and they together joyed to her].
59┬аAnd it was done in the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, by the name of his father.
60┬аAnd his mother answered, and said, Nay, but he shall be called John.
61┬аAnd they said to her, For no man is in thy kindred, that is called [by] this name.
62┬аAnd they beckoned to his father, what he would that he were called. [Soothly they made a sign to his father, whom he would him to be called.]
63┬аAnd he asking a stylus [a pointel], wrote, saying, John is his name. And all men wondered.
64┬аAnd at once his mouth was opened [Forsooth his mouth was opened anon], and his tongue, and he spake, and blessed God.
65┬аAnd dread was made on all their neighbours, and all these words were published on all the mountains of Judaea [on all the hilly places of Judaea].
66┬аAnd all men that heard putted in their heart, and said, What manner child shall this be? For the hand of the Lord was with him. [And all men that heard put in their heart, saying, Who guessest thou, this child shall be? And soothly the hand of the Lord was with him.]
67┬аAnd Zacharias, his father, was full-filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, and said, [And Zacharias, his father, was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,]
68┬аBlessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited, and made redemption of his people.
69┬аAnd he hath raised to us an horn of health in the house of David, his child.
70┬аAs he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, that were from the world.
71┬аHealth from our enemies, and from the hand of all men that hated us [and from the hand of all that hated us].
72┬аTo do mercy with our fathers, and to have mind of his holy testament.
73┬аThe great oath [The oath] that he swore to Abraham, our father,
74┬аto give himself to us. That we without dread delivered from the hand of our enemies, serve to him [That we delivered from the hand of our enemies, serve to him without dread],
75┬аin holiness and rightwiseness before him in all our days.
76┬аAnd thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, to make ready his ways.
77┬аTo give science of health to his people, into remission of their sins;
78┬аby the inwardness of the mercy of our God, in the which [in which] he springing up from on high hath visited us.
79┬аTo give light to them that sit in darknesses and in the shadow of death; to direct [to dress] our feet into the way of peace.
80┬аAnd the child waxed, and was comforted in spirit, and was in desert places unto the day [and was in desert till the day] of his showing to Israel.

King James Version
1┬аForasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
2┬аEven as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
3┬аIt seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
4┬аThat thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
5┬аThere was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6┬аAnd they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7┬аAnd they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
8┬аAnd it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
9┬аAccording to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
10┬аAnd the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
11┬аAnd there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12┬аAnd when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13┬аBut the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14┬аAnd thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15┬аFor he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
16┬аAnd many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17┬аAnd he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
18┬аAnd Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19┬аAnd the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
20┬аAnd, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21┬аAnd the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
22┬аAnd when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
23┬аAnd it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24┬аAnd after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25┬аThus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
26┬аAnd in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27┬аTo a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28┬аAnd the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29┬аAnd when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30┬аAnd the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31┬аAnd, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
32┬аHe shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33┬аAnd he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34┬аThen said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35┬аAnd the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36┬аAnd, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37┬аFor with God nothing shall be impossible.
38┬аAnd Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39┬аAnd Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40┬аAnd entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41┬аAnd it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42┬аAnd she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43┬аAnd whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44┬аFor, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45┬аAnd blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46┬аAnd Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47┬аAnd my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48┬аFor he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49┬аFor he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50┬аAnd his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51┬аHe hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52┬аHe hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53┬аHe hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54┬аHe hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55┬аAs he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
56┬аAnd Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
57┬аNow Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58┬аAnd her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59┬аAnd it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60┬аAnd his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61┬аAnd they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62┬аAnd they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63┬аAnd he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64┬аAnd his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
65┬аAnd fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
66┬аAnd all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67┬аAnd his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68┬аBlessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69┬аAnd hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70┬аAs he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71┬аThat we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72┬аTo perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73┬аThe oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74┬аThat he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75┬аIn holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76┬аAnd thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77┬аTo give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78┬аThrough the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79┬аTo give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80┬аAnd the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

5┬аIn the time of Herod king of Judea(I) there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah;(J) his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6┬аBoth of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the LordтАЩs commands and decrees blamelessly.(K) 7┬аBut they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8┬аOnce when ZechariahтАЩs division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,(L) 9┬аhe was chosen by lot,(M) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.(N) 10┬аAnd when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.(O)
11┬аThen an angel(P) of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.(Q) 12┬аWhen Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.(R) 13┬аBut the angel said to him: тАЬDo not be afraid,(S) Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.(T) 14┬аHe will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,(U) 15┬аfor he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink,(V) and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit(W) even before he is born.(X) 16┬аHe will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17┬аAnd he will go on before the Lord,(Y) in the spirit and power of Elijah,(Z) to turn the hearts of the parents to their children(AA) and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteousтАФto make ready a people prepared for the Lord.тАЭ(AB)
18┬аZechariah asked the angel, тАЬHow can I be sure of this?(AC) I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.тАЭ(AD)
19┬аThe angel said to him, тАЬI am Gabriel.(AE) I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20┬аAnd now you will be silent and not able to speak(AF) until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.тАЭ
21┬аMeanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22┬аWhen he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs(AG) to them but remained unable to speak.
23┬аWhen his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24┬аAfter this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25┬атАЬThe Lord has done this for me,тАЭ she said. тАЬIn these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace(AH) among the people.тАЭ
The Birth of Jesus Foretold
26┬аIn the sixth month of ElizabethтАЩs pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel(AI) to Nazareth,(AJ) a town in Galilee, 27┬аto a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(AK) a descendant of David. The virginтАЩs name was Mary. 28┬аThe angel went to her and said, тАЬGreetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.тАЭ
29┬аMary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30┬аBut the angel said to her, тАЬDo not be afraid,(AL) Mary; you have found favor with God.(AM) 31┬аYou will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(AN) 32┬аHe will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(AO) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(AP) 33┬аand he will reign over JacobтАЩs descendants forever; his kingdom(AQ) will never end.тАЭ(AR)
34┬атАЬHow will this be,тАЭ Mary asked the angel, тАЬsince I am a virgin?тАЭ
35┬аThe angel answered, тАЬThe Holy Spirit will come on you,(AS) and the power of the Most High(AT) will overshadow you. So the holy one(AU) to be born will be called[b] the Son of God.(AV) 36┬аEven Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child(AW) in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37┬аFor no word from God will ever fail.тАЭ(AX)
38┬атАЬI am the LordтАЩs servant,тАЭ Mary answered. тАЬMay your word to me be fulfilled.тАЭ Then the angel left her.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39┬аAt that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(AY) 40┬аwhere she entered ZechariahтАЩs home and greeted Elizabeth. 41┬аWhen Elizabeth heard MaryтАЩs greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 42┬аIn a loud voice she exclaimed: тАЬBlessed are you among women,(BA) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43┬аBut why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(BB) should come to me? 44┬аAs soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45┬аBlessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!тАЭ
MaryтАЩs Song(BC)
46┬аAnd Mary said:
тАЬMy soul glorifies the Lord(BD)
47┬а and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,(BE)
48┬аfor he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.(BF)
From now on all generations will call me blessed,(BG)

56┬аMary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
The Birth of John the Baptist
57┬аWhen it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58┬аHer neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
59┬аOn the eighth day they came to circumcise(BQ) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60┬аbut his mother spoke up and said, тАЬNo! He is to be called John.тАЭ(BR)
61┬аThey said to her, тАЬThere is no one among your relatives who has that name.тАЭ
62┬аThen they made signs(BS) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63┬аHe asked for a writing tablet, and to everyoneтАЩs astonishment he wrote, тАЬHis name is John.тАЭ(BT) 64┬аImmediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(BU) praising God. 65┬аAll the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(BV) people were talking about all these things. 66┬аEveryone who heard this wondered about it, asking, тАЬWhat then is this child going to be?тАЭ For the LordтАЩs hand was with him.(BW)
ZechariahтАЩs Song
