¹⁶ Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord must be put to death;^(A) the whole community is to stone him. If he blasphemes the Name, he is to be put to death, whether the resident alien or the native.

³ At this, some of the scribes said to themselves, “He’s blaspheming!” ^(A)

⁶² The high priest stood up and said to him, “Don’t you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you?” ⁶³ But^(A) Jesus kept silent.^(B) The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath^(C) by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”^(D)

⁶⁴ “You have said it,” Jesus told him. “But I tell you, in the future^[a] you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”^[b](E)

⁶⁵ Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed!^(F) Why do we still need witnesses? See, now you’ve heard the blasphemy.^{(G) 66} What is your decision?”

They answered, “He deserves death!” ^(H)

¹⁸ This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill him:^(A) Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

⁵⁹ So they picked up stones^(A) to throw at him.^(B) But Jesus was hidden^[a](C) and went out of the temple.^[b](D)
