Primera elegía
1 ¡Qué solitaria se encuentra
la ciudad superpoblada!
Ha quedado como viuda
la grande ante las naciones.
La reina de las provincias
se ha convertido en esclava.
2 Pasa las noches llorando,
riega el llanto sus mejillas;
no hay nadie que la consuele
entre todos sus amantes;
sus amigos la han dejado
y se le han vuelto enemigos.
3 Desterrada y humillada,
Judá sufre esclavitud
y habita entre las naciones
sin encontrar su morada;
todos sus perseguidores
le han dado caza en su asedio.
4 De luto están las calzadas
de Sión, sin peregrinos;
sus puertas están en ruinas
y sus sacerdotes gimen;
sus doncellas se lamentan
y ella padece amargura.
5 Sus enemigos la oprimen,
sus adversarios prosperan,
porque el Señor la ha afligido
por sus copiosos pecados;
sus niños van al destierro
delante del enemigo.
6 Sión se ha visto privada
de toda su majestad;
sus príncipes, como ciervos
que no han encontrado pastos,
caminan desfallecidos
ante sus perseguidores.
7 Recuerda Jerusalén
días tristes de vida errante,
cayendo en mano enemiga
sin que nadie la ayudara.
Los enemigos, al verla,
se burlaban de su ruina.
8 ¡Jerusalén ha pecado:
por eso ha quedado impura!
Los que la honraban la humillan
porque la han visto desnuda;
ella también se lamenta
y hasta se vuelve de espaldas.
9 Su impureza está en sus ropas,
no pensó en tales extremos.
Su caída fue increíble
y ya no hay quien la consuele.
“Mira, Señor, mi desgracia
y el triunfo del enemigo”.
10 Mano ha puesto el enemigo
sobre todos sus tesoros;
ella ha visto a los paganos
profanar el santuario,
aunque tú habías prohibido
que entraran en tu asamblea.
11 Toda su gente se queja,
anda en busca de alimento;
cambian sus joyas por pan
para mantenerse vivos.
“Mira, Señor, y contempla
en qué vileza he caído”.
12 ¿No os dice nada a vosotros,
los que vais por el camino?
Mirad bien si hay un dolor
como el dolor que me aflige,
que el Señor me castigó
el día de su furor.
13 Desde el cielo mandó un fuego
que me ha abrasado los huesos;
tendió una trampa a mi paso
y me hizo volver atrás;
me ha dejado destrozada
y sufriendo todo el día.
14 Con mi delito hizo un yugo
bien atado por su mano
y me lo cargó en el cuello,
debilitando mis fuerzas;
pues me ha entregado mi Dios
a quien no puedo hacer frente.
15 Desbarató a mis valientes
mi Dios en medio de mí;
llamó contra mí un ejército
para acabar con mis jóvenes.
¡Mi Dios pisó en el lagar
a la virgen de Judá!
16 Por eso yo estoy llorando
y mis ojos vierten lágrimas,
porque no hay quien me consuele
ni quien me devuelva el ánimo.
Mis hijos están atónitos
por la victoria enemiga.
17 Aunque Sión tiende sus manos,
no hay nadie que la consuele.
Mandó el Señor que a Jacob
lo cercasen enemigos;
Jerusalén ha quedado
mancillada en medio de ellos.
18 El Señor ha sido justo,
pues me opuse a su mandato.
Escuchadme, pueblos todos,
y contemplad mi dolor:
mis jóvenes y doncellas
se marcharon al destierro.
19 Pedí auxilio a mis amantes,
pero ellos me traicionaron.
Mis sacerdotes y ancianos
murieron en la ciudad
buscando algún alimento
con que reanimar sus vidas.
20 Contempla, Señor, mi angustia:
mis entrañas se estremecen,
dentro el corazón se agita
porque he sido muy rebelde.
Fuera me quedo sin hijos
y en casa ronda la muerte.
21 Aunque escuchan mis gemidos,
¡no hay nadie que me consuele!
Mi enemigo oye mi mal
y celebra lo que has hecho.
¡Haz que llegue el día anunciado
y corra mi misma suerte!
22 Ten presente su maldad
y trátalo a él también
como me has tratado a mí
por todas mis rebeldías.
¡Que son muchos mis lamentos
y mi corazón flaquea!

Jerusalem in Affliction
1 How lonely sits the city
That was full of people!
(A)How like a widow is she,
Who was great among the nations!
The (B)princess among the provinces
Has become a [a]slave!
2 She (C)weeps bitterly in the (D)night,
Her tears are on her cheeks;
Among all her lovers
She has none to comfort her.
All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies.
3 (E)Judah has gone into captivity,
Under affliction and hard servitude;
(F)She dwells among the [b]nations,
She finds no (G)rest;
All her persecutors overtake her in dire straits.
4 The roads to Zion mourn
Because no one comes to the [c]set feasts.
All her gates are (H)desolate;
Her priests sigh,
Her virgins are afflicted,
And she is in bitterness.
5 Her adversaries (I)have become [d]the master,
Her enemies prosper;
For the Lord has afflicted her
(J)Because of the multitude of her transgressions.
Her (K)children have gone into captivity before the enemy.
6 And from the daughter of Zion
All her splendor has departed.
Her princes have become like deer
That find no pasture,
That [e]flee without strength
Before the pursuer.
7 In the days of her affliction and roaming,
Jerusalem (L)remembers all her pleasant things
That she had in the days of old.
When her people fell into the hand of the enemy,
With no one to help her,
The adversaries saw her
And mocked at her [f]downfall.
8 (M)Jerusalem has sinned gravely,
Therefore she has become [g]vile.
All who honored her despise her
Because (N)they have seen her nakedness;
Yes, she sighs and turns away.
9 Her uncleanness is in her skirts;
She (O)did not consider her destiny;
Therefore her collapse was awesome;
She had no comforter.
“O Lord, behold my affliction,
For the enemy is exalted!”
10 The adversary has spread his hand
Over all her [h]pleasant things;
For she has seen (P)the nations enter her [i]sanctuary,
Those whom You commanded
(Q)Not to enter Your assembly.
11 All her people sigh,
(R)They [j]seek bread;
They have given their [k]valuables for food to restore life.
“See, O Lord, and consider,
For I am scorned.”
12 “Is it nothing to you, all you who [l]pass by?
Behold and see
(S)If there is any sorrow like my sorrow,
Which has been brought on me,
Which the Lord has inflicted
In the day of His fierce anger.
13 “From above He has sent fire into my bones,
And it overpowered them;
He has (T)spread a net for my feet
And turned me back;
He has made me desolate
And faint all the day.
14 “The(U) yoke of my transgressions was [m]bound;
They were woven together by His hands,
And thrust upon my neck.
He made my strength fail;
The Lord delivered me into the hands of those whom I am not able to withstand.
15 “The Lord has trampled underfoot all my mighty men in my midst;
He has called an assembly against me
To crush my young men;
(V)The Lord trampled as in a winepress
The virgin daughter of Judah.
16 “For these things I weep;
My eye, (W)my eye overflows with water;
Because the comforter, who should restore my life,
Is far from me.
My children are desolate
Because the enemy prevailed.”
17 (X)Zion [n]spreads out her hands,
But no one comforts her;
The Lord has commanded concerning Jacob
That those (Y)around him become his adversaries;
Jerusalem has become an unclean thing among them.
18 “The Lord is (Z)righteous,
For I (AA)rebelled against His [o]commandment.
Hear now, all peoples,
And behold my sorrow;
My virgins and my young men
Have gone into captivity.
19 “I called for my lovers,
But they deceived me;
My priests and my elders
Breathed their last in the city,
While they sought food
To restore their life.
20 “See, O Lord, that I am in distress;
My (AB)soul[p] is troubled;
My heart is overturned within me,
For I have been very rebellious.
(AC)Outside the sword bereaves,
At home it is like death.
21 “They have heard that I sigh,
But no one comforts me.
All my enemies have heard of my trouble;
They are (AD)glad that You have done it.
Bring on (AE)the day You have [q]announced,
That they may become like me.
22 “Let(AF) all their wickedness come before You,
And do to them as You have done to me
For all my transgressions;
For my sighs are many,
And my heart is faint.”

How Lonely Sits the City
1 (A)How lonely sits the city
that was full of people!
How like (B)a widow has she become,
she who was great among the nations!
She who was (C)a princess among the provinces
has become (D)a slave.
2 (E)She weeps bitterly in the night,
with tears on her cheeks;
(F)among all her lovers
she has (G)none to comfort her;
(H)all her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
they have become her enemies.
3 (I)Judah has gone into exile because of affliction[a]
and hard servitude;
(J)she dwells now among the nations,
(K)but finds no resting place;
her pursuers have all overtaken her
in the midst of her distress.[b]
4 The roads to Zion mourn,
for none come to (L)the festival;
(M)all her gates are desolate;
her priests (N)groan;
her virgins have been afflicted,[c]
and she herself suffers bitterly.
5 (O)Her foes have become the head;
her (P)enemies prosper,
because (Q)the Lord has afflicted her
(R)for the multitude of her transgressions;
(S)her children have gone away,
captives before the foe.
6 From the daughter of Zion
all her majesty has departed.
Her princes have become like deer

they fled without strength

7 Jerusalem remembers
in the days of her affliction and wandering
(U)all the precious things
that were hers from (V)days of old.
When her people fell into the hand of the foe,
and there was none to help her,
her foes gloated over her;
they (W)mocked at her downfall.
8 (X)Jerusalem sinned grievously;
therefore she became filthy;
all who honored her despise her,
(Y)for they have seen her nakedness;
she herself (Z)groans
and turns her face away.
9 Her uncleanness was (AA)in her skirts;

therefore her fall is terrible;

“O Lord, behold my affliction,

10 The enemy has stretched out his hands

enter her sanctuary,

to enter your congregation.

as (AI)they search for bread;

to revive their strength.
“Look, O Lord, and see,
for I am despised.”
12 “Is it nothing to you, all (AL)you who pass by?
(AM)Look and see
if there is any sorrow like my sorrow,
which was brought upon me,
which (AN)the Lord inflicted
on (AO)the day of his fierce anger.
13 “From on high he (AP)sent fire;
into my bones[e] he made it descend;
(AQ)he spread a net for my feet;
he turned me back;
(AR)he has left me stunned,
faint all the day long.
14 “My transgressions were bound[f] into (AS)a yoke;
by his hand they were fastened together;
they were set upon my neck;
he caused my strength to fail;
the Lord gave me into the hands
of those whom I cannot withstand.
15 “The Lord rejected
all my mighty men in my midst;
he summoned an assembly against me
to crush my young men;
(AT)the Lord has trodden as in a winepress
the virgin daughter of Judah.
16 “For these things (AU)I weep;
my eyes flow with tears;
for (AV)a comforter is far from me,
one to (AW)revive my spirit;
my children are desolate,
for the enemy has prevailed.”
17 (AX)Zion stretches out her hands,
but (AY)there is none to comfort her;
the Lord has commanded against Jacob
that his neighbors should be his foes;
Jerusalem has become
a filthy thing among them.
18 (AZ)“The Lord is in the right,
(BA)for I have rebelled against his word;
but hear, all you peoples,
and see my suffering;
(BB)my young women and my young men
have gone into captivity.
19 “I called to (BC)my lovers,
but they deceived me;
my priests and elders
perished in the city,
while (BD)they sought food
to revive their strength.
20 “Look, O Lord, for I am in distress;
(BE)my stomach churns;
my heart is wrung within me,
because I have been very rebellious.
(BF)In the street the sword bereaves;
in the house it is like death.
21 “They heard[g] (BG)my groaning,
yet (BH)there is no one to comfort me.
All my enemies have heard of my trouble;
(BI)they are glad that you have done it.
You have brought[h] the day you announced;
(BJ)now let them be as I am.
22 (BK)“Let all their evildoing come before you,
and deal with them
as (BL)you have dealt with me
because of all my transgressions;
for (BM)my groans are many,
