4 ^[a]How the gold has lost its luster,
    the fine gold become dull!
The sacred gems are scattered
    at every street corner.^(A)

¹⁹ “‘They will throw their silver into the streets,^(A)
    and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean.
Their silver and gold
    will not be able to deliver them
    in the day of the Lord’s wrath.^(B)
It will not satisfy^(C) their hunger
    or fill their stomachs,
    for it has caused them to stumble^(D) into sin.^(E)
20 They took pride in their beautiful jewelry
    and used it to make^(F) their detestable idols.
They made it into vile images;^(G)
    therefore I will make it a thing unclean for them.^(H)
21 I will give their wealth as plunder^(I) to foreigners
    and as loot to the wicked of the earth,
    who will defile it.^(J)
22 I will turn my face^(K) away from the people,
    and robbers will desecrate the place I treasure.
They will enter it
    and will defile it.^(L)

¹⁹ Arise, cry out in the night,
    as the watches of the night begin;
pour out your heart^(A) like water
    in the presence of the Lord.^(B)
Lift up your hands^(C) to him
    for the lives of your children,
who faint^(D) from hunger
    at every street corner.

²¹ See how the faithful city
    has become a prostitute!^(A)
She once was full of justice;
    righteousness^(B) used to dwell in her—
    but now murderers!^(C)

¹² How you have fallen^(A) from heaven,
    morning star,^(B) son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
    you who once laid low the nations!^(C)
