13 Les enfants d’Israël firent encore ce qui déplaît à l’Eternel; et l’Eternel les livra entre les mains des Philistins, pendant quarante ans.

2 Il y avait un homme de Tsorea, de la famille des Danites, et qui s’appelait Manoach. Sa femme était stérile, et n’enfantait pas. 3 L’ange de l’Eternel apparut à la femme, et lui dit: Voici, tu es stérile, et tu n’as point d’enfants; tu deviendras enceinte, et tu enfanteras un fils. 4 Maintenant prends bien garde, ne bois ni vin ni liqueur forte, et ne mange rien d’impur. 5 Car tu vas devenir enceinte et tu enfanteras un fils. Le rasoir ne passera point sur sa tête, parce que cet enfant sera consacré à Dieu dès le ventre de sa mère; et ce sera lui qui commencera à délivrer Israël de la main des Philistins.

6 La femme alla dire à son mari: Un homme de Dieu est venu vers moi, et il avait l’aspect d’un ange de Dieu, un aspect redoutable. Je ne lui ai pas demandé d’où il était, et il ne m’a pas fait connaître son nom. 7 Mais il m’a dit: Tu vas devenir enceinte, et tu enfanteras un fils; et maintenant ne bois ni vin ni liqueur forte, et ne mange rien d’impur, parce que cet enfant sera consacré à Dieu dès le ventre de sa mère jusqu’au jour de sa mort.

8 Manoach fit cette prière à l’Eternel: Ah! Seigneur, que l’homme de Dieu que tu as envoyé vienne encore vers nous, et qu’il nous enseigne ce que nous devons faire pour l’enfant qui naîtra! 9 Dieu exauça la prière de Manoach, et l’ange de Dieu vint encore vers la femme. Elle était assise dans un champ, et Manoach, son mari, n’était pas avec elle. 10 Elle courut promptement donner cette nouvelle à son mari, et lui dit: Voici, l’homme qui était venu l’autre jour vers moi m’est apparu. 11 Manoach se leva, suivit sa femme, alla vers l’homme, et lui dit: Est-ce toi qui as parlé à cette femme? Il répondit: C’est moi. 12 Manoach dit: Maintenant, si ta parole s’accomplit, que faudra-t-il observer à l’égard de l’enfant, et qu’y aura-t-il à faire? 13 L’ange de l’Eternel répondit à Manoach: La femme s’abstiendra de tout ce que je lui ai dit. 14 Elle ne goûtera d’aucun produit de la vigne, elle ne boira ni vin ni liqueur forte, et elle ne mangera rien d’impur; elle observera tout ce que je lui ai prescrit. 15 Manoach dit à l’ange de l’Eternel: Permets-nous de te retenir, et de t’apprêter un chevreau. 16 L’ange de l’Eternel répondit à Manoach: Quand tu me retiendrais, je ne mangerais pas de ton mets; mais si tu veux faire un holocauste, tu l’offriras à l’Eternel. Manoach ne savait point que c’était un ange de l’Eternel. 17 Et Manoach dit à l’ange de l’Eternel: Quel est ton nom, afin que nous te rendions gloire, quand ta parole s’accomplira? 18 L’ange de l’Eternel lui répondit: Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom? Il est merveilleux. 19 Manoach prit le chevreau et l’offrande, et fit un sacrifice à l’Eternel sur le rocher. Il s’opéra un prodige, pendant que Manoach et sa femme regardaient. 20 Comme la flamme montait de dessus l’autel vers le ciel, l’ange de l’Eternel monta dans la flamme de l’autel. A cette vue, Manoach et sa femme tombèrent la face contre terre. 21 L’ange de l’Eternel n’apparut plus à Manoach et à sa femme. Alors Manoach comprit que c’était l’ange de l’Eternel, 22 et il dit à sa femme: Nous allons mourir, car nous avons vu Dieu. 23 Sa femme lui répondit: Si l’Eternel avait voulu nous faire mourir, il n’aurait pas pris de nos mains l’holocauste et l’offrande, il ne nous aurait pas fait voir tout cela, et il ne nous aurait pas maintenant fait entendre pareilles choses.

24 La femme enfanta un fils, et lui donna le nom de Samson. L’enfant grandit, et l’Eternel le bénit. 25 Et l’Esprit de l’Eternel commença à l’agiter à Machané-Dan, entre Tsorea et Eschthaol.

Samson’s Birth

13 The Israelites again did evil in the Lord’s sight,[a] so the Lord handed them over to the Philistines for forty years.

2 There was a man named Manoah from Zorah, from the Danite tribe. His wife was infertile and childless.[b] 3 The angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “You[c] are infertile and childless,[d] but you will conceive and have a son. 4 Now be careful! Do not drink wine or beer, and do not eat any food that will make you ritually unclean.[e] 5 Look, you will conceive and have a son.[f] You must never cut his hair,[g] for the child will be dedicated to God[h] from birth. He will begin to deliver Israel from the power[i] of the Philistines.”

6 The woman went and said to her husband, “A man sent from God[j] came to me! He looked like God’s angel—he was very awesome.[k] I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name. 7 He said to me, ‘Look, you will conceive and have a son.[l] So now, do not drink wine or beer and do not eat any food that will make you ritually unclean.[m] For the child will be dedicated[n] to God from birth till the day he dies.’”

8 Manoah prayed to the Lord,[o] “Please, Lord, allow the man sent from God[p] to visit[q] us again, so he can teach[r] us how we should raise[s] the child who will be born.” 9 God answered Manoah’s prayer.[t] God’s angel visited[u] the woman again while she was sitting in the field. But her husband Manoah was not with her. 10 The woman ran at once and told her husband,[v] “Come quickly,[w] the man who visited[x] me the other day has appeared to me!” 11 So Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he met[y] the man, he said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to my wife?”[z] He said, “Yes.”[aa] 12 Manoah said, “Now, when your announcement comes true,[ab] how should the child be raised and what should he do?”[ac] 13 The angel of the Lord told[ad] Manoah, “Your wife should pay attention to everything I told her.[ae] 14 She should not drink[af] anything that the grapevine produces. She must not drink wine or beer, and she must not eat any food that will make her ritually unclean.[ag] She should obey everything I commanded her to do.” 15 Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “Please stay here awhile,[ah] so we can prepare a young goat for you to eat.”[ai] 16 The angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “If I stay,[aj] I will not eat your food. But if you want to make a burnt sacrifice to the Lord, you should offer it.” (He said this because Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the Lord.)[ak] 17 Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “Tell us your name, so we can honor you when your announcement comes true.”[al] 18 The angel of the Lord said to him, “You should not ask me my name, because you cannot comprehend it.”[am] 19 Manoah took a young goat and a grain offering and offered them on a rock to the Lord. The Lord’s messenger did an amazing thing as Manoah and his wife watched.[an] 20 As the flame went up from the altar toward the sky, the angel of the Lord went up in it[ao] while Manoah and his wife watched. They fell facedown[ap] to the ground.

21 The angel of the Lord did not appear again to Manoah and his wife. After all this happened Manoah realized that the visitor had been the angel of the Lord. 22 Manoah said to his wife, “We will certainly die, because we have seen a supernatural being!”[aq] 23 But his wife said to him, “If the Lord wanted to kill us, he would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from us.[ar] He would not have shown us all these things, or have spoken to us like this just now.”

24 Manoah’s wife[as] gave birth to a son and named him Samson.[at] The child grew and the Lord empowered[au] him. 25 The Lord’s Spirit began to control him[av] in Mahaneh Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.

According to this interpretation, in v. 5 the angel reveals the truth to her—actually she has recently conceived and is now pregnant (see the translation in R. G. Boling, Judges [AB], 217). Usage favors this interpretation. The predicate adjective הָרָה (harah, “[be/become] pregnant”) elsewhere has a past (1 Sam 4:19) or present (Gen 16:11; 38:25; 2 Sam 11:5) translation value. (The usage in Isa 7:14 is debated, but a present translation is definitely possible there.) A final, but less likely possibility, is that she miraculously conceived during the angel’s speech, sometime between his statements recorded in vv. 3 and 5.

In vv. 5 and 7 the angel refers to “God” (אֱלֹהִים, ʾelohim), not the Lord (יְהוַה, yehvah). Manoah’s wife calls the visitor “a man sent from God” and “God’s angel” (v. 6), while Manoah prays to the “Lord” (אֲדוֹנָי, ʾadonay) and calls the visitor “a man sent from God” (v. 8).
  38. Judges 13:17 tn Heb “Who your name? For [when] your word comes [to pass], we will honor you.” Manoah apparently gets tongue-tied and uses the wrong pronoun (“who” instead of “what”). He starts to say, “Who are you?” But then he switches to “your name” as if he began the sentence with “what.” See R. G. Boling, Judges (AB), 222.
  39. Judges 13:18 tn Heb “Why do you ask for my name, for it is incomprehensible?” The Hebrew adjective e פִּלְאִי (pilʾi, “wonderful, incomprehensible”) refers to what is in a category of its own and is beyond full human understanding. Note the use of this word in Ps 139:6, where God’s knowledge is described as incomprehensible and unattainable.
  40. Judges 13:19 tc Heb “Doing an extraordinary deed while Manoah and his wife were watching.” The subject of the participle is missing. The translation assumes that the phrase “the Lord’s messenger” was lost by homoioteleuton. If the text originally read לַיהוָה מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה (layhvah malʾakh yehvah), the scribe’s eye could have jumped from the first יְהוָה to the second, accidentally omitting two of the three words. Later the conjunction וּ (shureq) would have been added to the following מַפְלִא (mafliʾ) for syntactical reasons. Another possibility is that a pronominal subject (הוּא, huʾ) has been lost in the MT due to haplography.

  43. Judges 13:22 tn Or “seen God.” Some take the Hebrew term אֱלֹהִים (ʾelohim) as the divine name (“God”) here, but this seems unlikely since v. 21 informs us that Manoah realized this was the Lord’s messenger, not God himself. Of course, he may be exaggerating for the sake of emphasis. Another option, the one followed in the translation, understands Manoah to be referring to a lesser deity. The term אֱלֹהִים (ʾelohim) is sometimes used of an individual deity other than the Lord (see BDB 43 s.v. 2.a). One cannot assume that Manoah was a theologically sophisticated monotheist.

2 Now there was a certain man from (D)Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children. 3 And the (E)Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. 4 Now therefore, please be careful (F)not to drink wine or similar drink, and not to eat anything unclean. 5 For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no (G)razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be (H)a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall (I)begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”

6 So the woman came and told her husband, saying, (J)“A Man of God came to me, and His (K)countenance[a] was like the countenance of the Angel of God, very awesome; but I (L)did not ask Him where He was from, and He did not tell me His name. 7 And He said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. Now drink no wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’ ”

8 Then Manoah prayed to the Lord, and said, “O my Lord, please let the Man of God whom You sent come to us again and teach us what we shall do for the child who will be born.”

9 And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the Angel of God came to the woman again as she was sitting in the field; but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 Then the woman ran in haste and told her husband, and said to him, “Look, the Man who came to me the other day has just now appeared to me!”

11 So Manoah arose and followed his wife. When he came to the Man, he said to Him, “Are You the Man who spoke to this woman?”

And He said, “I am.”

12 Manoah said, “Now let Your words come to pass! What will be the boy’s rule of life, and his work?”

13 So the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. 14 She may not eat anything that comes from the vine, (M)nor may she drink wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean. All that I commanded her let her observe.”

15 Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “Please (N)let us detain You, and we will prepare a young goat for You.”

16 And the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Though you detain Me, I will not eat your food. But if you offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord.” (For Manoah did not know He was the Angel of the Lord.)

17 Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “What is Your name, that when Your words come to pass we may honor You?”

18 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, (O)“Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?”

19 So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, (P)and offered it upon the rock to the Lord. And He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife looked on— 20 it happened as the flame went up toward heaven from the altar—the Angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar! When Manoah and his wife saw this, they (Q)fell on their faces to the ground. 21 When the Angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and his wife, (R)then Manoah knew that He was the Angel of the Lord.

22 And Manoah said to his wife, (S)“We shall surely die, because we have seen God!”

23 But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things, nor would He have told us such things as these at this time.”

24 So the woman bore a son and called his name (T)Samson; and (U)the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. 25 (V)And the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him at [b]Mahaneh Dan (W)between Zorah and (X)Eshtaol.
