Abimélec
9 Abimélec hijo de Yerubaal fue a Siquén a ver a los hermanos de su madre, y les dijo a ellos y a todo el clan de su madre: 2 «Preguntadles a todos los señores de Siquén: “¿Qué os conviene más: que todos los setenta hijos de Yerubaal os gobiernen, o que os gobierne un solo hombre?” Acordaos de que yo soy de la misma sangre que vosotros».
3 Cuando los hermanos de su madre comunicaron todo esto a los señores de Siquén, estos se inclinaron a favor de Abimélec, porque dijeron: «Él es nuestro hermano». 4 Y le dieron setenta monedas de plata[a] del templo de Baal Berit, con las cuales Abimélec contrató a unos maleantes sin escrúpulos para que lo siguieran. 5 Fue a Ofra, a la casa de su padre, y sobre una misma piedra asesinó a sus setenta hermanos, hijos de Yerubaal. Pero Jotán, el hijo menor de Yerubaal, se escondió y logró escaparse. 6 Todos los señores de Siquén y Bet Miló se reunieron junto a la encina y la piedra sagrada que están en Siquén, para coronar como rey a Abimélec.
7 Cuando Jotán se enteró, subió a la cima del monte Guerizín y les gritó bien fuerte:
«¡Escuchadme, señores de Siquén,
y que Dios os escuche a vosotros!
8 »Un día los árboles salieron
a ungir un rey para sí mismos.
Y le dijeron al olivo:
“Reina sobre nosotros”.
9 Pero el olivo les respondió:
“¿He de renunciar a dar mi aceite,
con el cual se honra a los dioses y a los hombres,
para ir a mecerme sobre los árboles?”
10 »Después los árboles le dijeron a la higuera:
“Reina sobre nosotros”.
11 Pero la higuera les respondió:
“¿He de renunciar a mi fruto,
tan bueno y dulce,
para ir a mecerme sobre los árboles?”
12 »Luego los árboles le dijeron a la vid:
“Reina sobre nosotros”.
13 Pero la vid les respondió:
“¿He de renunciar a mi vino,
que alegra a los dioses y a los hombres,
para ir a mecerme sobre los árboles?”
14 »Por último, todos los árboles le dijeron al espino:
“Reina sobre nosotros”.
15 Pero el espino respondió a los árboles:
“Si de veras queréis ungirme como vuestro rey,
venid y refugiaos bajo mi sombra;
pero, si no, ¡que salga fuego del espino,
y que consuma los cedros del Líbano!”
16 »Ahora bien, ¿habéis actuado vosotros con honradez y buena fe al coronar rey a Abimélec? ¿Habéis sido justos con Yerubaal y su familia, y lo habéis tratado como se merecía? 17 Mi padre luchó por vosotros, y arriesgando su vida os libró del poder de los madianitas. 18 Pero hoy vosotros os habéis rebelado contra la familia de mi padre; habéis matado a sus setenta hijos sobre una misma piedra, y habéis hecho de Abimélec, hijo de su esclava, el rey de los señores de Siquén solo porque él es vuestro pariente. 19 Si hoy habéis actuado con honradez y buena fe hacia Yerubaal y su familia, ¡que seáis felices con Abimélec, y que también él lo sea con vosotros! 20 Pero, si no, señores de Siquén y Bet Miló, ¡que salga fuego de Abimélec y os consuma, y que salga fuego de vosotros y consuma a Abimélec!»
21 Luego Jotán escapó, huyendo hasta Ber. Allí se quedó a vivir porque le tenía miedo a su hermano Abimélec.
22 Abimélec había ya gobernado a Israel tres años 23 cuando Dios interpuso un espíritu maligno entre Abimélec y los señores de Siquén, quienes lo traicionaron. 24 Esto sucedió a fin de que la violencia contra los setenta hijos de Yerubaal, y el derramamiento de su sangre, recayera sobre su hermano Abimélec, que los había matado, y sobre los señores de Siquén, que habían sido sus cómplices en ese crimen. 25 Los señores de Siquén le tendían emboscadas en las cumbres de las colinas, y asaltaban a todos los que pasaban por allí. Pero Abimélec se enteró de todo esto.
26 Aconteció que Gaal hijo de Ébed llegó a Siquén, junto con sus hermanos, y los señores de aquella ciudad confiaron en él. 27 Después de haber salido a los campos y recogido y pisado las uvas, celebraron un festival en el templo de su dios. Mientras comían y bebían, maldijeron a Abimélec. 28 Gaal hijo de Ébed dijo: «¿Quién se cree Abimélec, y qué es Siquén, para que tengamos que estar sometidos a él? ¿No es acaso el hijo de Yerubaal, y no es Zebul su delegado? ¡Que sirvan a los hombres de Jamor, el padre de Siquén! ¿Por qué hemos de servir a Abimélec? 29 ¡Si este pueblo estuviera bajo mis órdenes, yo echaría a Abimélec! Le diría:[b] “¡Reúne a todo tu ejército y sal a pelear!”»
30 Zebul, el gobernador de la ciudad, se enfureció cuando oyó lo que decía Gaal hijo de Ébed. 31 Entonces envió en secreto mensajeros a Abimélec, diciéndole: «Gaal hijo de Ébed y sus hermanos han llegado a Siquén y están instigando a la ciudad contra ti. 32 Ahora bien, levantaos tú y tus hombres durante la noche, y poneos al acecho en los campos. 33 Por la mañana, a la salida del sol, lánzate contra la ciudad. Cuando Gaal y sus hombres salgan contra ti, haz lo que más te convenga».
34 Así que Abimélec y todo su ejército se levantaron de noche y se pusieron al acecho cerca de Siquén, divididos en cuatro compañías. 35 Gaal hijo de Ébed había salido, y estaba de pie a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, precisamente cuando Abimélec y sus soldados salían de donde estaban al acecho. 36 Cuando Gaal los vio, le dijo a Zebul:
―¡Mira, viene bajando gente desde las cumbres de las colinas!
―Confundes con gente las sombras de las colinas —replicó Zebul.
37 Pero Gaal insistió, diciendo:
―Mira, viene bajando gente por la colina Ombligo de la Tierra, y otra compañía viene por el camino de la Encina de los Adivinos.
38 Zebul le dijo entonces:
―¿Dónde están ahora tus fanfarronerías, tú que decías: “¿Quién es Abimélec para que nos sometamos a él?”? ¿No son esos los hombres de los que tú te burlabas? ¡Sal y lucha contra ellos!
39 Gaal salió al frente de los señores de Siquén y peleó contra Abimélec; 40 pero este los persiguió y, en la huida, muchos cayeron muertos por todo el camino, hasta la entrada de la puerta. 41 Abimélec se quedó en Arumá, y Zebul expulsó de Siquén a Gaal y a sus hermanos.
42 Al día siguiente, el pueblo de Siquén salió a los campos, y fueron a contárselo a Abimélec. 43 Entonces Abimélec tomó a sus hombres, los dividió en tres compañías, y se puso al acecho en los campos. Cuando vio que el ejército salía de la ciudad, se levantó para atacarlo. 44 Abimélec y las compañías que estaban con él se apresuraron a ocupar posiciones a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad. Luego dos de las compañías arremetieron contra los que estaban en los campos y los derrotaron. 45 Abimélec combatió contra la ciudad durante todo aquel día, hasta que la conquistó matando a sus habitantes; arrasó la ciudad y esparció sal sobre ella.
46 Al saber esto, los señores que ocupaban la torre de Siquén entraron en la fortaleza del templo de El Berit. 47 Cuando Abimélec se enteró de que ellos se habían reunido allí, 48 él y todos sus hombres subieron al monte Zalmón. Tomó un hacha, cortó algunas ramas, y se las puso sobre los hombros. A los hombres que estaban con él les ordenó: «¡Rápido! ¡Haced lo mismo que me habéis visto hacer!» 49 Todos los hombres cortaron ramas y siguieron a Abimélec hasta la fortaleza, donde amontonaron las ramas y les prendieron fuego. Así murió toda la gente que estaba dentro de la torre de Siquén, que eran como mil hombres y mujeres.
50 Después Abimélec fue a Tebes, la sitió y la capturó. 51 Dentro de la ciudad había una torre fortificada, a la cual huyeron todos sus habitantes, hombres y mujeres. Se encerraron en la torre y subieron al techo. 52 Abimélec se dirigió a la torre y la atacó. Pero cuando se acercaba a la entrada para prenderle fuego, 53 una mujer le arrojó sobre la cabeza una piedra de moler y le partió el cráneo.
54 De inmediato llamó Abimélec a su escudero y le ordenó: «Saca tu espada y mátame, para que no se diga de mí: “¡Lo mató una mujer!”» Entonces su escudero le clavó la espada, y así murió. 55 Cuando los israelitas vieron que Abimélec estaba muerto, regresaron a sus casas.
56 Fue así como Dios le pagó a Abimélec con la misma moneda, por el crimen que había cometido contra su padre al matar a sus setenta hermanos. 57 Además, Dios hizo que los hombres de Siquén pagaran por toda su maldad. Así cayó sobre ellos la maldición de Jotán hijo de Yerubaal.

Abimelech’s Conspiracy
9 Then Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem, to (A)his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying, 2 “Please speak in the hearing of all the men of Shechem: ‘Which is better for you, that all (B)seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal reign over you, or that one reign over you?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and (C)bone.”
3 And his mother’s brothers spoke all these words concerning him in the hearing of all the men of Shechem; and their heart was inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our (D)brother.” 4 So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of (E)Baal-Berith, with which Abimelech hired (F)worthless and reckless men; and they followed him. 5 Then he went to his father’s house (G)at Ophrah and (H)killed his brothers, the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, because he hid himself. 6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, all of Beth Millo, and they went and made Abimelech king beside the terebinth tree at the pillar that was in Shechem.
The Parable of the Trees
7 Now when they told Jotham, he went and stood on top of (I)Mount Gerizim, and lifted his voice and cried out. And he said to them:
“Listen to me, you men of Shechem,
That God may listen to you!
8 “The(J) trees once went forth to anoint a king over them.
And they said to the olive tree,
(K)‘Reign over us!’
9 But the olive tree said to them,
‘Should I cease giving my oil,
(L)With which they honor God and men,
And go to sway over trees?’
10 “Then the trees said to the fig tree,
‘You come and reign over us!’
11 But the fig tree said to them,
‘Should I cease my sweetness and my good fruit,
And go to sway over trees?’
12 “Then the trees said to the vine,
‘You come and reign over us!’
13 But the vine said to them,
‘Should I cease my new wine,
(M)Which cheers both God and men,
And go to sway over trees?’
14 “Then all the trees said to the bramble,
‘You come and reign over us!’
15 And the bramble said to the trees,
‘If in truth you anoint me as king over you,
Then come and take shelter in my (N)shade;
But if not, (O)let fire come out of the bramble
And devour the (P)cedars of Lebanon!’
16 “Now therefore, if you have acted in truth and sincerity in making Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him (Q)as[a] he deserves— 17 for my (R)father fought for you, risked his life, and (S)delivered you out of the hand of Midian; 18 (T)but you have risen up against my father’s house this day, and killed his seventy sons on one stone, and made Abimelech, the son of his (U)female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother— 19 if then you have acted in truth and sincerity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then (V)rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. 20 But if not, (W)let fire come from Abimelech and devour the men of Shechem and Beth Millo; and let fire come from the men of Shechem and from Beth Millo and devour Abimelech!” 21 And Jotham ran away and fled; and he went to (X)Beer and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
Downfall of Abimelech
22 After Abimelech had reigned over Israel three years, 23 (Y)God sent a (Z)spirit of ill will between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem (AA)dealt treacherously with Abimelech, 24 (AB)that the crime done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might be settled and their (AC)blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who aided him in the killing of his brothers. 25 And the men of Shechem set [b]men in ambush against him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way; and it was told Abimelech.
26 Now Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him. 27 So they went out into the fields, and gathered grapes from their vineyards and trod them, and [c]made merry. And they went into (AD)the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech. 28 Then Gaal the son of Ebed said, (AE)“Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of (AF)Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him? 29 (AG)If only this people were under my [d]authority! Then I would remove Abimelech.” So [e]he said to Abimelech, “Increase your army and come out!”
30 When Zebul, the ruler of the city, heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was aroused. 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly, saying, “Take note! Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and here they are, fortifying the city against you. 32 Now therefore, get up by night, you and the people who are with you, and [f]lie in wait in the field. 33 And it shall be, as soon as the sun is up in the morning, that you shall rise early and rush upon the city; and when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may then do to them [g]as you find opportunity.”
34 So Abimelech and all the people who were with him rose by night, and [h]lay in wait against Shechem in four companies. 35 When Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance to the city gate, Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from lying in wait. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!”
But Zebul said to him, “You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men.”
37 So Gaal spoke again and said, “See, people are coming down from the center of the land, and another company is coming from the [i]Diviners’ Terebinth Tree.”
38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where indeed is your mouth now, with which you (AH)said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out, if you will, and fight with them now.”
39 So Gaal went out, leading the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled from him; and many fell wounded, to the very entrance of the gate. 41 Then Abimelech dwelt at Arumah, and Zebul [j]drove out Gaal and his brothers, so that they would not dwell in Shechem.
42 And it came about on the next day that the people went out into the field, and they told Abimelech. 43 So he took his people, divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the field. And he looked, and there were the people, coming out of the city; and he rose against them and [k]attacked them. 44 Then Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city; and the other two companies rushed upon all who were in the fields and killed them. 45 So Abimelech fought against the city all that day; (AI)he took the city and killed the people who were in it; and he (AJ)demolished the city and sowed it with salt.
46 Now when all the men of the tower of Shechem had heard that, they entered the [l]stronghold of the temple (AK)of the god Berith. 47 And it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together. 48 Then Abimelech went up to Mount (AL)Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an ax in his hand and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it and laid it on his shoulder; then he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, make haste and do as I have done.” 49 So each of the people likewise cut down his own bough and followed Abimelech, put them against the [m]stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire above them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died, about a thousand men and women.
50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and he [n]encamped against Thebez and took it. 51 But there was a strong tower in the city, and all the men and women—all the people of the city—fled there and shut themselves in; then they went up to the top of the tower. 52 So Abimelech came as far as the tower and fought against it; and he drew near the door of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 But a certain woman (AM)dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull. 54 Then (AN)he called quickly to the young man, his armorbearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest men say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’ ” So his young man thrust him through, and he died. 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed, every man to his [o]place.
56 (AO)Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father by killing his seventy brothers. 57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem God returned on their own heads, and on them came (AP)the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Abimelek
9 Abimelek(A) son of Jerub-Baal(B) went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem and said to them and to all his mother’s clan, 2 “Ask all the citizens of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you: to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember, I am your flesh and blood.(C)”
3 When the brothers repeated all this to the citizens of Shechem, they were inclined to follow Abimelek, for they said, “He is related to us.” 4 They gave him seventy shekels[a] of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith,(D) and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels,(E) who became his followers. 5 He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers,(F) the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham,(G) the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.(H) 6 Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo(I) gathered beside the great tree(J) at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.
7 When Jotham(K) was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim(L) and shouted to them, “Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you. 8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’
9 “But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’
10 “Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’
11 “But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’
12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’
13 “But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine,(M) which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’
14 “Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’
15 “The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade;(N) but if not, then let fire come out(O) of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’(P)
16 “Have you acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelek king? Have you been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family? Have you treated him as he deserves? 17 Remember that my father fought for you and risked(Q) his life to rescue you from the hand of Midian. 18 But today you have revolted against my father’s family. You have murdered his seventy sons(R) on a single stone and have made Abimelek, the son of his female slave, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is related to you. 19 So have you acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal and his family today?(S) If you have, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his, too! 20 But if you have not, let fire come out(T) from Abimelek and consume you, the citizens of Shechem(U) and Beth Millo,(V) and let fire come out from you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!”
21 Then Jotham(W) fled, escaping to Beer,(X) and he lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek.
22 After Abimelek had governed Israel three years, 23 God stirred up animosity(Y) between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek. 24 God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons,(Z) the shedding(AA) of their blood, might be avenged(AB) on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him(AC) murder his brothers. 25 In opposition to him these citizens of Shechem set men on the hilltops to ambush and rob everyone who passed by, and this was reported to Abimelek.
26 Now Gaal son of Ebed(AD) moved with his clan into Shechem, and its citizens put their confidence in him. 27 After they had gone out into the fields and gathered the grapes and trodden(AE) them, they held a festival in the temple of their god.(AF) While they were eating and drinking, they cursed Abimelek. 28 Then Gaal son of Ebed(AG) said, “Who(AH) is Abimelek, and why should we Shechemites be subject to him? Isn’t he Jerub-Baal’s son, and isn’t Zebul his deputy? Serve the family of Hamor,(AI) Shechem’s father! Why should we serve Abimelek? 29 If only this people were under my command!(AJ) Then I would get rid of him. I would say to Abimelek, ‘Call out your whole army!’”[b](AK)
30 When Zebul the governor of the city heard what Gaal son of Ebed said, he was very angry. 31 Under cover he sent messengers to Abimelek, saying, “Gaal son of Ebed and his clan have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you. 32 Now then, during the night you and your men should come and lie in wait(AL) in the fields. 33 In the morning at sunrise, advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, seize the opportunity to attack them.(AM)”
34 So Abimelek and all his troops set out by night and took up concealed positions near Shechem in four companies. 35 Now Gaal son of Ebed had gone out and was standing at the entrance of the city gate(AN) just as Abimelek and his troops came out from their hiding place.(AO)
36 When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!”
Zebul replied, “You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men.”
37 But Gaal spoke up again: “Look, people are coming down from the central hill,[c] and a company is coming from the direction of the diviners’ tree.”
38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your big talk now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelek that we should be subject to him?’ Aren’t these the men you ridiculed?(AP) Go out and fight them!”
39 So Gaal led out[d] the citizens of Shechem and fought Abimelek. 40 Abimelek chased him all the way to the entrance of the gate, and many were killed as they fled. 41 Then Abimelek stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his clan out of Shechem.
42 The next day the people of Shechem went out to the fields, and this was reported to Abimelek. 43 So he took his men, divided them into three companies(AQ) and set an ambush(AR) in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose to attack them. 44 Abimelek and the companies with him rushed forward to a position at the entrance of the city gate. Then two companies attacked those in the fields and struck them down. 45 All that day Abimelek pressed his attack against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he destroyed the city(AS) and scattered salt(AT) over it.
46 On hearing this, the citizens in the tower of Shechem went into the stronghold of the temple(AU) of El-Berith. 47 When Abimelek heard that they had assembled there, 48 he and all his men went up Mount Zalmon.(AV) He took an ax and cut off some branches, which he lifted to his shoulders. He ordered the men with him, “Quick! Do what you have seen me do!” 49 So all the men cut branches and followed Abimelek. They piled them against the stronghold and set it on fire with the people still inside. So all the people in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women, also died.
50 Next Abimelek went to Thebez(AW) and besieged it and captured it. 51 Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and women—all the people of the city—had fled. They had locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof. 52 Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire, 53 a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull.(AX)
54 Hurriedly he called to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me,(AY) so that they can’t say, ‘A woman killed him.’” So his servant ran him through, and he died. 55 When the Israelites saw that Abimelek was dead, they went home.
56 Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers. 57 God also made the people of Shechem pay for all their wickedness.(AZ) The curse of Jotham(BA) son of Jerub-Baal came on them.
