⁴ And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of ^(A)Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired ^(B)worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him.

^33 (A)As soon as Gideon died, the people of Israel turned again and ^(B)whored after the Baals and made ^(C)Baal-berith their god.

^5 (A)But the Jews^{[a] (B)}were jealous, and taking ^(C)some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd.

⁷ and certain ^(A)worthless scoundrels^[a] gathered about him and defied Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was ^(B)young and irresolute^[b] and could not withstand them.

³ Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of ^(A)Tob, and ^(B)worthless fellows collected around Jephthah and went out with him.

^2 (A)And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul,^[a] gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him ^(B)about four hundred men.

⁴⁶ When all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered ^(A)the stronghold of the house of ^(B)El-berith. ⁴⁷ Abimelech was told that all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together. ⁴⁸ And Abimelech went up to Mount ^(C)Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood and took it up and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men who were with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do as I have done.” ⁴⁹ So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against ^(D)the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about 1,000 men and women.
