²⁰ And Samson’s wife was given to one of his companions^(A) who had attended him at the feast.

² “I was so sure you hated her,” he said, “that I gave her to your companion.^(A) Isn’t her younger sister more attractive? Take her instead.”

²⁹ The bride belongs to the bridegroom.^(A) The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.^(B)

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

¹⁸ “I am not referring to all of you;^(A) I know those I have chosen.^(B) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture:^(C) ‘He who shared my bread^(D) has turned^[a](E) against me.’^[b](F)

⁴⁹ Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”^(A) and kissed him.

⁵⁰ Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”^[a](B)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.

⁶ When the Philistines asked, “Who did this?” they were told, “Samson, the Timnite’s son-in-law, because his wife was given to his companion.^(A)”

So the Philistines went up and burned her^(B) and her father to death.^(C)
