Gibeon’s Deception Discovered
16 Three days after making the treaty with them, they heard that the Gibeonites were their neighbors, living among them. 17 So the Israelites set out and reached the Gibeonite cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.(A) 18 But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the community had sworn an oath(B) to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. Then the whole community grumbled against the leaders.

New International Version
16 Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near(A) them. 17 So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth(B) and Kiriath Jearim.(C) 18 But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath(D) to them by the Lord, the God of Israel.

16 And it happened at the end of three days, after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors who dwelt near them. 17 Then the children of Israel journeyed and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were (A)Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kirjath Jearim. 18 But the children of Israel did not [a]attack them, (B)because the rulers of the congregation had sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation complained against the rulers.
