Joshua 6

New International Version

6 Now the gates of Jericho^(A) were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.

²Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered^(B) Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. ³March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. ⁴Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns^(C) in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.^(D) ⁵When you hear them sound a long blast^(E) on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout;^(F) then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”

⁶So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.”^(G) ⁷And he ordered the army, “Advance^(H)! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark^(I) of the Lord.”

⁸When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. ⁹The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard^(J) followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. ¹⁰But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!^(K)” ¹¹So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.

¹²Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. ¹³The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. ¹⁴So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.

¹⁵On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.^(L) ¹⁶The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!^(M) ¹⁷The city and all that is in it are to be devoted^[a]^(N) to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute^(O) and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid^(P) the spies we sent. ¹⁸But keep away from the devoted things,^(Q) so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction^(R) and bring trouble^(S) on it. ¹⁹All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron^(T) are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”

²⁰When the trumpets sounded,^(U) the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout,^(V) the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.^(W) ²¹They devoted^(X) the city to the Lord and destroyed^(Y) with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.

²²Joshua said to the two men^(Z) who had spied out^(AA) the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.^(AB)” ²³So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her.^(AC) They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.

²⁴Then they burned the whole city^(AD) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron^(AE) into the treasury of the Lord’s house.^(AF) ²⁵But Joshua spared^(AG) Rahab the prostitute,^(AH) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho^(AI)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.

²⁶At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:^(AJ) “Cursed^(AK) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:

“At the cost of his firstborn son
he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
he will set up its gates.”^(AL)

²⁷So the Lord was with Joshua,^(AM) and his fame spread^(AN) throughout the land.

65 “I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me;
    I was found by those who did not seek me.^(A)
To a nation^(B) that did not call on my name,^(C)
    I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’
²All day long I have held out my hands
    to an obstinate people,^(D)
who walk in ways not good,
    pursuing their own imaginations^(E)—
³a people who continually provoke me
    to my very face,^(F)
offering sacrifices in gardens^(G)
    and burning incense^(H) on altars of brick;
⁴who sit among the graves^(I)
    and spend their nights keeping secret vigil;
who eat the flesh of pigs,^(J)
    and whose pots hold broth of impure meat;
⁵who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me,
    for I am too sacred^(K) for you!’
Such people are smoke^(L) in my nostrils,
    a fire that keeps burning all day.

⁶“See, it stands written before me:
    I will not keep silent^(M) but will pay back^(N) in full;
    I will pay it back into their laps^(O)—
⁷both your sins^(P) and the sins of your ancestors,”^(Q)
    says the Lord.
“Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains
    and defied me on the hills,^(R)
I will measure into their laps
    the full payment^(S) for their former deeds.”

⁸This is what the Lord says:

“As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes^(T)
    and people say, ‘Don’t destroy it,
    there is still a blessing in it,’
so will I do in behalf of my servants;^(U)
    I will not destroy them all.
⁹I will bring forth descendants^(V) from Jacob,
    and from Judah those who will possess^(W) my mountains;
my chosen^(X) people will inherit them,
    and there will my servants live.^(Y)
¹⁰Sharon^(Z) will become a pasture for flocks,^(AA)
    and the Valley of Achor^(AB) a resting place for herds,
    for my people who seek^(AC) me.

¹¹“But as for you who forsake^(AD) the Lord
    and forget my holy mountain,^(AE)
who spread a table for Fortune
    and fill bowls of mixed wine^(AF) for Destiny,
¹²I will destine you for the sword,^(AG)
    and all of you will fall in the slaughter;^(AH)
for I called but you did not answer,^(AI)
    I spoke but you did not listen.^(AJ)
You did evil in my sight
    and chose what displeases me.”^(AK)

¹³Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“My servants will eat,^(AL)
    but you will go hungry;^(AM)
my servants will drink,^(AN)
    but you will go thirsty;^(AO)
my servants will rejoice,^(AP)
    but you will be put to shame.^(AQ)
¹⁴My servants will sing^(AR)
    out of the joy of their hearts,
but you will cry out^(AS)
    from anguish of heart
    and wail in brokenness of spirit.
¹⁵You will leave your name
    for my chosen ones to use in their curses;^(AT)
the Sovereign Lord will put you to death,
    but to his servants he will give another name.^(AU)
¹⁶Whoever invokes a blessing^(AV) in the land
    will do so by the one true God;^(AW)
whoever takes an oath in the land
    will swear^(AX) by the one true God.
For the past troubles^(AY) will be forgotten
    and hidden from my eyes.

New Heavens and a New Earth

¹⁷“See, I will create
    new heavens and a new earth.^(AZ)
The former things will not be remembered,^(BA)
    nor will they come to mind.
¹⁸But be glad and rejoice^(BB) forever
    in what I will create,
for I will create Jerusalem^(BC) to be a delight
    and its people a joy.
¹⁹I will rejoice^(BD) over Jerusalem
    and take delight^(BE) in my people;
the sound of weeping and of crying^(BF)
    will be heard in it no more.

²⁰“Never again will there be in it
    an infant^(BG) who lives but a few days,
    or an old man who does not live out his years;^(BH)
the one who dies at a hundred
    will be thought a mere child;
the one who fails to reach^[a] a hundred
    will be considered accursed.
²¹They will build houses^(BI) and dwell in them;
    they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.^(BJ)
²²No longer will they build houses and others live in them,^(BK)
    or plant and others eat.
For as the days of a tree,^(BL)
    so will be the days^(BM) of my people;
my chosen^(BN) ones will long enjoy
    the work of their hands.
²³They will not labor in vain,^(BO)
    nor will they bear children doomed to misfortune;^(BP)
for they will be a people blessed^(BQ) by the Lord,
    they and their descendants^(BR) with them.
²⁴Before they call^(BS) I will answer;^(BT)
    while they are still speaking^(BU) I will hear.
²⁵The wolf and the lamb^(BV) will feed together,
    and the lion will eat straw like the ox,^(BW)
    and dust will be the serpent’s^(BX) food.
They will neither harm nor destroy
    on all my holy mountain,”^(BY)
says the Lord.

¹³From Paphos,^(A) Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia,^(B) where John^(C) left them to return to Jerusalem. ¹⁴From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch.^(D) On the Sabbath^(E) they entered the synagogue^(F) and sat down. ¹⁵After the reading from the Law^(G) and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”

¹⁶Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand^(H) and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! ¹⁷The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country;^(I) ¹⁸for about forty years he endured their conduct^[a]^(J) in the wilderness;^(K) ¹⁹and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan,^(L) giving their land to his people^(M) as their inheritance.^(N) ²⁰All this took about 450 years.

“After this, God gave them judges^(O) until the time of Samuel the prophet.^(P) ²¹Then the people asked for a king,^(Q) and he gave them Saul^(R) son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin,^(S) who ruled forty years. ²²After removing Saul,^(T) he made David their king.^(U) God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;^(V) he will do everything I want him to do.’^(W)

²³“From this man’s descendants^(X) God has brought to Israel the Savior^(Y) Jesus,^(Z) as he promised.^(AA) ²⁴Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.^(AB) ²⁵As John was completing his work,^(AC) he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for.^(AD) But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’^(AE)

²⁶“Fellow children of Abraham^(AF) and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation^(AG) has been sent. ²⁷The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus,^(AH) yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets^(AI) that are read every Sabbath. ²⁸Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.^(AJ) ²⁹When they had carried out all that was written about him,^(AK) they took him down from the cross^(AL) and laid him in a tomb.^(AM) ³⁰But God raised him from the dead,^(AN) ³¹and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.^(AO) They are now his witnesses^(AP) to our people.

³²“We tell you the good news:^(AQ) What God promised our ancestors^(AR) ³³he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.^(AS) As it is written in the second Psalm:

“‘You are my son;
today I have become your father.’^[b]^(AT)

³⁴God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,

“‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’^[c]^(AU)

³⁵So it is also stated elsewhere:

“‘You will not let your holy one see decay.’^[d]^(AV)

³⁶“Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;^(AW) he was buried with his ancestors^(AX) and his body decayed. ³⁷But the one whom God raised from the dead^(AY) did not see decay.

³⁸“Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.^(AZ) ³⁹Through him everyone who believes^(BA) is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.^(BB) ⁴⁰Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:

⁴¹“‘Look, you scoffers,
    wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
    that you would never believe,
    even if someone told you.’^[e]”^(BC)
