for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim.(A) The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.(B) So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.(C)

Allotment for Caleb

Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal,(D) and Caleb son of Jephunneh(E) the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God(F) at Kadesh Barnea(G) about you and me.(H) I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea(I) to explore the land.(J) And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,(K) but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear.(L) I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.(M) So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance(N) and that of your children(O) forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’[a]

10 “Now then, just as the Lord promised,(P) he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved(Q) about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!(R) 11 I am still as strong(S) today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous(T) to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day.(U) You yourself heard then that the Anakites(V) were there and their cities were large and fortified,(W) but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

13 Then Joshua blessed(X) Caleb son of Jephunneh(Y) and gave him Hebron(Z) as his inheritance.(AA)

  1. Joshua 14:9 Deut. 1:36

For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.

As the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.

Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadeshbarnea.

Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadeshbarnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.

Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.

And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God.

10 And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.
