⁷ Then the men of Israel said to the ^(A)Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell among us; so ^(B)how can we make a covenant with you?”

¹⁹ There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except ^(A)the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. All the others they took in battle.

² And ^(A)you shall make no ^[a]covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ^(B)you shall tear down their altars.’ ^(C)But you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this?

The Treaty with the Gibeonites

9 And it came to pass when ^(A)all the kings who were on this side of the Jordan, in the hills and in the lowland and in all the coasts of ^(B)the Great Sea toward Lebanon—^(C)the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite—heard about it,

¹⁶ “But ^(A)of the cities of these peoples which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance, you shall let nothing that breathes remain alive,

² and when the Lord your God delivers ^(A)them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. ^(B)You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them. ^3 (C)Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son.

^52 (A)then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all their molded images, and demolish all their ^[a]high places;

^12 (A)Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare in your midst.

³¹ And ^(A)I will set your ^[a]bounds from the Red Sea to the sea, Philistia, and from the desert to the ^[b]River. For I will ^(B)deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out before you. ^32 (C)You shall make no ^[c]covenant with them, nor with their gods. ³³ They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against Me. For if you serve their gods, ^(D)it will surely be a snare to you.”
