La fuite de Jonas
1 L’Eternel adressa la parole à Jonas[a], fils d’Amittaï, en ces termes : 2 Mets-toi en route, va à Ninive[b] la grande ville et proclame des menaces contre ses habitants, car l’écho de leur méchanceté est parvenu jusqu’à moi.
3 Jonas se mit en route pour s’enfuir à Tarsis[c], loin de la présence de l’Eternel. Il descendit au port de Jaffa[d], où il trouva un navire en partance pour Tarsis. Il paya le prix de la traversée et descendit dans le bateau pour aller avec l’équipage à Tarsis, loin de la présence de l’Eternel.
4 Mais l’Eternel fit souffler un grand vent sur la mer et déchaîna une si grande tempête que le navire menaçait de se briser. 5 Les marins furent saisis de crainte, et chacun se mit à implorer son dieu. Puis ils jetèrent la cargaison par-dessus bord pour alléger le navire. Quant à Jonas, il était descendu dans la cale du bateau, il s’était couché et dormait profondément. 6 Le capitaine s’approcha de lui et l’interpella : Hé quoi ! Tu dors ! Mets-toi debout et prie ton Dieu. Peut-être Dieu se souciera-t-il de nous et nous ne périrons pas.
7 Pendant ce temps, les matelots se dirent entre eux : Allons, tirons au sort pour savoir qui nous attire ce malheur.
Ils tirèrent donc au sort et Jonas fut désigné. 8 Alors ils lui demandèrent : Fais-nous savoir qui nous attire ce malheur ! Quelles sont tes occupations ? D’où viens-tu ? De quel pays ? Et de quel peuple es-tu ?
9 Jonas leur répondit : Je suis hébreu et je crains l’Eternel, le Dieu du ciel qui a fait la mer et la terre.
10 Il leur apprit qu’il s’enfuyait loin de la présence de l’Eternel. Aussi ces hommes furent-ils saisis d’une grande crainte et lui dirent : Pourquoi as-tu fait cela ?
11 Comme la mer se démontait de plus en plus, ils lui demandèrent : Que te ferons-nous pour que la mer se calme et cesse de nous être contraire ?
12 Il leur répondit : Prenez-moi et jetez-moi à la mer, et la mer se calmera, car je sais bien que c’est à cause de moi que cette grande tempête s’est déchaînée contre vous.
13 Ces hommes se mirent d’abord à ramer de toutes leurs forces pour regagner la côte, mais ils n’y parvinrent pas, car la mer se déchaînait toujours plus contre eux. 14 Alors ils crièrent à l’Eternel et dirent : O Eternel, nous t’en prions, ne nous fais pas périr à cause de cet homme et ne nous tiens pas responsables de la mort d’un innocent. Car toi, ô Eternel, tu as fait ce que tu as voulu.
15 Puis ils prirent Jonas et le jetèrent par-dessus bord. Aussitôt, la mer en furie se calma. 16 Alors l’équipage fut saisi d’une grande crainte envers l’Eternel ; ils lui offrirent un sacrifice et s’engagèrent envers lui par des vœux.

Jona weigert Gods opdracht uit te voeren
1 De Here zei tegen Jona, de zoon van Amittai:
2 Ga naar de grote stad Ninevé en geef haar inwoners namens Mij de volgende boodschap: ‘De Here zegt: Ik waarschuw u, want Ik kan uw slechtheid niet langer verdragen!’
3 Maar Jona wilde niet. Hij ging naar de havenstad Jaffa waar hij een schip vond met de stad Tarsis als bestemming. Hij betaalde voor zijn overtocht, ging aan boord en vluchtte zo voor de Here.
4 Terwijl het schip voortzeilde, joeg de Here echter een harde wind over de zee. Er ontstond een storm waardoor het schip dreigde te vergaan. 5 In hun doodsangst riepen de bemanningsleden hun goden te hulp en gooiden de lading overboord om het schip lichter te maken. Terwijl dit gebeurde, lag Jona te slapen in het scheepsruim. 6 De kapitein van het schip kwam naar beneden, wekte hem en zei: ‘Ligt u op een moment als dit te slapen? Vooruit, sta op. Roep uw god te hulp. Misschien zal hij genadig zijn en ons leven redden!’ 7 De bemanning overlegde en besloot te loten om erachter te komen wie de goden had beledigd en dus de schuld had van deze verschrikkelijke storm. Jona bleek de schuldige te zijn. 8 ‘Wat hebt u uitgehaald,’ vroegen zij hem, ‘dat wij in deze vreselijke storm terechtkomen? Wie bent u? Wat doet u hier? Uit welk land komt u?’ 9,10 Hij zei: ‘Ik ben een Hebreeër en ik geloof in de Eeuwige, de God van de hemel, die de hemel, de aarde en de zee heeft gemaakt.’ Daarna vertelde hij hun dat hij op de vlucht was voor de Here. De angst sloeg de mannen om het hart toen zij dat hoorden. ‘Waarom hebt u dat gedaan?,’ riepen zij. 11 ‘Wat moeten wij met u doen om een eind te maken aan deze storm?’ Want de zee werd steeds dreigender. 12 ‘Gooi mij maar overboord,’ zei hij, ‘dan zal de zee weer tot rust komen. Want ik weet dat deze storm míjn schuld is.’
13 Zij spanden zich nog meer in om het schip naar de wal te roeien, maar het lukte niet. Zij konden niet tegen de storm op. 14 Toen schreeuwden zij in gebed tot de Here: ‘Here,’ smeekten zij, ‘laat ons toch niet sterven om de zonde van deze man en stel ons niet verantwoordelijk voor zijn dood, want het is niet onze schuld, U hebt naar uw eigen inzicht gehandeld.’ 15 Toen pakten zij Jona en gooiden hem overboord in het woest kolkende water, en de storm ging liggen! 16 De mannen werden vervuld met een diep ontzag voor de Here, zij brachten Hem offers en zwoeren Hem te zullen dienen. 17 De Here had echter gezorgd voor een grote vis, die Jona inslikte. Jona bleef drie dagen en drie nachten in die vis.

Jonah’s Disobedience
1 Now the word of the Lord came to (A)Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to (B)Nineveh, that (C)great city, and cry out against it; for (D)their wickedness has come up before Me.” 3 But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to (E)Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to (F)Tarshish (G)from the presence of the Lord.
The Storm at Sea
4 But (H)the Lord [a]sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.
5 Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten [b]the load. But Jonah had gone down (I)into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.
6 So the captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, (J)call on your God; (K)perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
7 And they said to one another, “Come, let us (L)cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this trouble has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 Then they said to him, (M)“Please tell us! For whose cause is this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?”
9 So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear [c]the Lord, the God of heaven, (N)who made the sea and the dry land.”
Jonah Thrown into the Sea
10 Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11 Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?”—for the sea was growing more tempestuous.
12 And he said to them, (O)“Pick me up and [d]throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, (P)but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them. 14 Therefore they cried out to the Lord and said, “We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and (Q)do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, (R)have done as it pleased You.” 15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, (S)and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men (T)feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord and took vows.
Jonah’s Prayer and Deliverance
17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And (U)Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah Flees From the Lord
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah(A) son of Amittai:(B) 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh(C) and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 But Jonah ran(D) away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish(E). He went down to Joppa,(F) where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.(G)
4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.(H) 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.(I)
But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call(J) on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”(K)
7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.”(L) They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.(M) 8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord,(N) the God of heaven,(O) who made the sea(P) and the dry land.(Q)”
10 This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)
11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”(R)
13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.(S) 14 Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man,(T) for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.”(U) 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.(V) 16 At this the men greatly feared(W) the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows(X) to him.
Jonah’s Prayer
17 Now the Lord provided(Y) a huge fish to swallow Jonah,(Z) and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
