Johannes 12:5-50

5 ”Varför sålde man inte den här oljan för trehundra denarer och gav pengarna till de fattiga?”[a] 6 Detta sa han inte för att han brydde sig om de fattiga, utan därför att han var en tjuv. Han skötte om kassan och brukade ta pengar därifrån.
7 Men Jesus svarade: ”Lämna henne ifred! Hon sparade den här oljan för min begravning. 8 De fattiga kommer ni alltid att ha ibland er, men mig har ni inte alltid.”
9 När en stor mängd judar fick höra att Jesus var där, kom de dit för att träffa honom och också för att se Lasaros, som han hade uppväckt från de döda. 10 Översteprästerna bestämde sig då för att döda Lasaros också, 11 eftersom fler och fler judar lämnade dem och istället började tro på Jesus.
Jesus rider in i Jerusalem på en åsna
(Matt 21:4-9; Mark 11:7-10; Luk 19:35-38)
12 Nästa dag fick en stor folkmassa som kommit till högtiden höra att Jesus var på väg till Jerusalem, 13 och de tog palmkvistar och gick ut för att möta honom. De ropade:
”Hosianna![b]”
”Välsignad är han som kommer i Herrens namn![c]”
”Israels kung!”
14 Jesus fick tag på en ung åsna och satte sig på den, som det står skrivet:
16 Lärjungarna förstod först inte detta. Men när Jesus hade förhärligats, kom de ihåg att så som det stod skrivet om honom, så hade det gjorts med honom.
17 Alla de som hade varit med när Jesus kallade ut Lasaros ur graven och uppväckte honom från de döda vittnade om detta. 18 Därför var det så många som gick ut för att möta honom, när de hörde att han hade gjort detta tecken.
19 Men fariseerna sa till varandra: ”Ni ser att ingenting hjälper! Hela världen följer ju efter honom!”
Jesus förklarar varför han måste dö
20 Bland dem som hade kommit till högtiden för att tillbe fanns det också några greker. 21 De kom till Filippos, han som var från Betsaida i Galileen, och sa: ”Herre, vi skulle vilja träffa Jesus.” 22 Filippos gick då och talade om detta för Andreas, och tillsammans gick de och berättade det för Jesus.
23 Men Jesus svarade dem: ”Den stund har nu kommit då Människosonen ska förhärligas. 24 Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: om ett vetekorn inte faller i jorden och dör, förblir det ett ensamt korn, men om det dör ger det en stor skörd. 25 Den som älskar sitt liv ska förlora det, men den som hatar sitt liv här i världen, han ska bevara det och få evigt liv.
26 Om någon vill tjäna mig, ska han följa mig, och där jag är, där ska också min tjänare vara. Om någon tjänar mig, ska han bli ärad av min Fader. 27 Just nu är jag fylld av ångest. Ska jag be: ’Fader, rädda mig från denna stund’? Ändå är det för den stunden jag har kommit. 28 Fader, förhärliga ditt namn!”
Då hördes en röst från himlen: ”Jag har redan förhärligat det och ska förhärliga det igen.” 29 När folket som stod där hörde det sa de att det var åskan, medan andra sa att en ängel hade talat till honom.
30 Men Jesus sa: ”Rösten hördes för er skull, inte för min. 31 Domen faller nu över den här världen, nu ska den här världens härskare kastas ut. 32 Och när jag har lyfts upp[f] från jorden ska jag dra alla till mig.” 33 Detta sa han för att göra klart för dem hur han skulle dö.
34 Då sa folket till honom: ”Vi har fått lära oss i lagen[g] att Messias ska stanna för evigt. Hur kan du nu säga att Messias ska lyftas upp? Vem är Människosonen?”
35 Jesus svarade: ”Ljuset ska finnas hos er bara en kort tid till. Vandra medan ni har ljuset, så att inte mörkret får makt över er. Den som vandrar i mörker vet inte vart han går. 36 Tro på ljuset, medan ni fortfarande har ljuset, så ska ni bli ljusets barn.” Sedan Jesus hade sagt detta gick han bort och gömde sig för dem.
Folket vill inte tro på Jesus
37 Trots alla tecken Jesus hade gjort inför dem, trodde de inte på honom. 38 Så gick det i uppfyllelse som profeten Jesaja sagt:
”Herre, vem trodde på vårt budskap,
och för vem har Herren uppenbarat sin makt?”[h]
39 De kunde helt enkelt inte tro, för Jesaja säger också:
40 ”Han har förblindat deras ögon
och gjort deras hjärtan hårda,
så att de inte kan se med sina ögon
och förstå i sitt hjärta och inte vända om
och bli botade av mig.”[i]
41 Detta sa Jesaja eftersom han såg hans härlighet[j], och det var om honom han talade.
42 Ändå fanns det många, till och med i det judiska rådet, som trodde på Jesus, men med tanke på fariseerna vågade de inte erkänna det öppet, för att inte bli uteslutna ur synagogan. 43 De ville hellre bli ärade av människor än av Gud.
44 Jesus ropade: ”Den som tror på mig, tror inte på mig utan på honom som har sänt mig, 45 och den som ser mig, ser honom som har sänt mig. 46 Jag har kommit som ett ljus hit till världen, för att ingen som tror på mig ska bli kvar i mörker. 47 Om någon hör mina ord men inte håller dem, så dömer inte jag honom, för jag har inte kommit för att döma världen, utan för att rädda den. 48 Den som förkastar mig och inte tar emot mina ord, han har en domare: han ska på den sista dagen dömas av det ord jag har talat. 49 Jag har inte talat av mig själv, utan Fadern som har sänt mig har befallt mig vad jag ska säga och tala. 50 Jag vet att hans befallning ger evigt liv. Därför talar jag som Fadern har sagt mig.”

5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;
11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.
16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.
17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.
19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
20 And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.
30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.
34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:
38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
