John 8
J.B. Phillips New Testament
8Â 1Â while Jesus went off to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus deflates the rigorists
2-5Â Early next morning he returned to the Temple and the entire crowd came to him. So he sat down and began to teach them. But the scribes and Pharisees brought in to him a woman who had been caught in adultery. They made her stand in front, and then said to him, âNow, master, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. According to the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women to death. Now, what do you say about her?â
6-9a They said this to test him, so that they might have some good grounds for an accusation. But Jesus stooped down and began to write with his finger in the dust on the ground. But as they persisted in their questioning, he straightened himself up and said to them, âLet the one among you who has never sinned throw the first stone at her.â Then he stooped down again and continued writing with his finger on the ground. And when they heard what he said, they were convicted by their own consciences and went out, one by one, beginning with the eldest until they had all gone.
9b-10Â Jesus was left alone, with the woman still standing where they had put her. So he stood up and said to her, âWhere are they allâdid no one condemn you?â
11Â And she said, âNo one, sir.â âNeither do I condemn you,â said Jesus to her. âGo home and do not sin again.â
Jesusâ bold claimsâabout himselfâand his Father
12Â Later, Jesus spoke to the people again and said, âI am the light of the world. The man who follows me will never walk in the dark but will live his life in the light.â
13Â This made the Pharisees say to him, âYou are testifying to yourselfâyour evidence is not valid.â
14-18Â Jesus answered, âEven if I am testifying to myself, my evidence is valid, for I know where I have come from and I know where I am going. But as for you, you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. You are judging by human standards, but I am not judging anyone. Yet if I should judge, my decision would be just, for I am not aloneâthe Father who sent me is with me. In your Law, it is stated that the witness of two persons is valid. I am one testifying to myself and the second witness to me is the Father who sent me.â
19Â âAnd where is this father of yours?â they replied. âYou do not know my Father,â returned Jesus, âany more than you know me: if you had known me, you would have known him.â
20Â Jesus made these statements while he was teaching in the Temple treasury. Yet no one arrested him, for his time had not yet come.
21Â Later, Jesus spoke to them again and said, âI am going away and you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. You cannot come where I am going.â
22Â This made the Jews say, âIs he going to kill himself, then? Is that why he says, âYou cannot come where I am goingâ?â
23-24Â âThe difference between us,â Jesus said to them, âis that you come from below and I am from above. You belong to this world but I do not. That is why I told you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am who I am, you will die in your sins.â
25-26Â Then they said, âWho are you?â âI am what I have told you I was from the beginning,â replied Jesus. âThere is much in you that I could speak about and condemn. But he who sent me is true and I am only speaking to this world what I myself have heard from him.â
27-30Â They did not realise that he was talking to them about the Father. So Jesus resumed, âWhen you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will realise that I am who I say I am, and that I do nothing on my own authority but speak simply as my Father has taught me. The one who sent me is with me now: the Father has never left me alone for I always do what pleases him.â And even while he said these words, many people believed in him.
Jesus speaks of personal freedom
31-32Â So Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, âIf you are faithful to what I have said, you are truly my disciples. And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free!â
33Â âBut we are descendants of Abraham,â they replied, âand we have never in our lives been any manâs slaves. How can you say to us, âYou will be set freeâ?â
34-38Â Jesus returned, âBelieve me when I tell you that every man who commits sin is a slave. For a slave is no permanent part of a household, but a son is. If the Son, then, sets you free, you are really free! I know that you are descended from Abraham, but some of you are looking for a way to kill me because you canât bear my words. I am telling you what I have seen in the presence of my Father, and you are doing what you have seen in the presence of your father.â
39-41Â âOur father is Abraham!â they retorted. âIf you were the children of Abraham, you would do the sort of things Abraham did. But in fact, at this moment, you are looking for a way to kill me, simply because I am a man who has told you the truth that I have heard from God. Abraham would never have done that. No, you are doing your fatherâs work.â âWe are not illegitimate!â they retorted. âWe have one FatherâGod.â
42-47Â âIf God were really your Father,â replied Jesus, âyou would have loved me. For I came from God, and I am here. I did not come of my own accordâhe sent me, and I am here. Why do you not understand my words? It is because you cannot hear what I am really saying. Your father is the devil, and what you are wanting to do is what your father longs to do. He always was a murderer, and has never dealt with the truth, since the truth will have nothing to do with him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks in character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. And it is because I speak the truth that you will not believe me. Which of you can prove me guilty of sin? If I am speaking the truth, why is it that you do not believe me? The man who is born of God can hear these words of God and the reason why you cannot hear the words of God is simply this, that you are not the sons of God.â
48Â âHow right we are,â retorted the Jews, âin calling you a Samaritan, and mad at that!â
49-51Â âNo,â replied Jesus, âI am not mad. I am honouring my Father and you are trying to dishonour me. But I am not concerned with my own glory: there is one whose concern it is, and he is the true judge. Believe me when I tell you that if anybody accepts my words, he will never see death at all.â
52-53Â âNow we know that youâre mad,â replied the Jews. âWhy, Abraham died and the prophets, too, and yet you say, âIf a man accepts my words, he will never experience death!â Are you greater than our father, Abraham? He died, and so did the prophetsâwho are you making yourself out to be?â
54-56Â âIf I were trying to glorify myself,â returned Jesus, âsuch glory would be worthless. But it is my Father who glorifies me, the very one whom you say is your Godâthough you have never known him. But I know him, and if I said I did not know him, I should be as much a liar as you are! But I do know him and I am faithful to what he says. As for your father, Abraham, his great joy was that he would see my coming. Now he has seen it and he is overjoyed.â
57Â âLook,â said the Jews to him, âyou are not fifty yet, and has Abraham seen you?â
58Â âI tell you in solemn truth,â returned Jesus, âbefore there was an Abraham, I AM!â
59Â At this, they picked up stones to hurl at him, but Jesus disappeared and made his way out of the Temple.
John 8
King James Version
8Â Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
2Â And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3Â And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
4Â They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5Â Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6Â This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
7Â So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8Â And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
9Â And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10Â When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11Â She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
12Â Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13Â The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
14Â Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
15Â Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
16Â And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17Â It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
18Â I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
19Â Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
20Â These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
21Â Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
22Â Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.
23Â And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
24Â I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
25Â Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
26Â I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
27Â They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
28Â Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
29Â And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
30Â As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31Â Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32Â And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33Â They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34Â Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35Â And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36Â If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
37Â I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38Â I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
39Â They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
40Â But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
41Â Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
42Â Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43Â Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44Â Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45Â And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46Â Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
47Â He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
48Â Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49Â Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
50Â And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51Â Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
52Â Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
53Â Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
54Â Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
55Â Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
56Â Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
57Â Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58Â Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59Â Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

New King James Version
Jesus the Light of the World
8Â But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2Â Now [a]early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and (A)taught them. 3Â Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, 4Â they said to Him, âTeacher, [b]this woman was caught in (B)adultery, in the very act. 5Â (C)Now [c]Moses, in the law, commanded us [d]that such should be stoned. But what do You [e]say?â 6Â This they said, testing Him, that they (D)might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, [f]as though He did not hear.
7Â So when they continued asking Him, He [g]raised Himself up and said to them, (E)âHe who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.â 8Â And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9Â Then those who heard it, (F)being[h] convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10Â When Jesus had raised Himself up [i]and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, âWoman, where are those accusers [j]of yours? Has no one condemned you?â
11Â She said, âNo one, Lord.â
And Jesus said to her, (G)âNeither do I condemn you; go [k]and (H)sin no more.â
12Â Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, (I)âI am the light of the world. He who (J)follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.â
Jesus Defends His Self-Witness
13Â The Pharisees therefore said to Him, (K)âYou bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not [l]true.â
14Â Jesus answered and said to them, âEven if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but (L)you do not know where I come from and where I am going. 15Â (M)You judge according to the flesh; (N)I judge no one. 16Â And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for (O)I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me. 17Â (P)It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. 18Â I am One who bears witness of Myself, and (Q)the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.â
19Â Then they said to Him, âWhere is Your Father?â
Jesus answered, (R)âYou know neither Me nor My Father. (S)If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.â
20Â These words Jesus spoke in (T)the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and (U)no one laid hands on Him, for (V)His hour had not yet come.
Jesus Predicts His Departure
21Â Then Jesus said to them again, âI am going away, and (W)you will seek Me, and (X)will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.â
22Â So the Jews said, âWill He kill Himself, because He says, âWhere I go you cannot comeâ?â
23Â And He said to them, (Y)âYou are from beneath; I am from above. (Z)You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24Â (AA)Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; (AB)for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.â
25Â Then they said to Him, âWho are You?â
And Jesus said to them, âJust what I (AC)have been saying to you from the beginning. 26Â I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but (AD)He who sent Me is true; and (AE)I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him.â
27Â They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father.
28Â Then Jesus said to them, âWhen you (AF)lift[m] up the Son of Man, (AG)then you will know that I am He, and (AH)that I do nothing of Myself; but (AI)as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. 29Â And (AJ)He who sent Me is with Me. (AK)The Father has not left Me alone, (AL)for I always do those things that please Him.â 30Â As He spoke these words, (AM)many believed in Him.
The Truth Shall Make You Free
31Â Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, âIf you (AN)abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32Â And you shall know the (AO)truth, and (AP)the truth shall make you free.â
33Â They answered Him, (AQ)âWe are Abrahamâs descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, âYou will be made freeâ?â
34Â Jesus answered them, âMost assuredly, I say to you, (AR)whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35Â And (AS)a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36Â (AT)Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Abrahamâs Seed and Satanâs
37Â âI know that you are Abrahamâs descendants, but (AU)you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38Â (AV)I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have [n]seen with your father.â
39Â They answered and said to Him, (AW)âAbraham is our father.â
Jesus said to them, (AX)âIf you were Abrahamâs children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40Â (AY)But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth (AZ)which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41Â You do the deeds of your father.â
Then they said to Him, âWe were not born of fornication; (BA)we have one FatherâGod.â
42Â Jesus said to them, (BB)âIf God were your Father, you would love Me, for (BC)I proceeded forth and came from God; (BD)nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43Â (BE)Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44Â (BF)You are of your father the devil, and the (BG)desires of your father you want to (BH)do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and (BI)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45Â But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46Â Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47Â (BJ)He who is of God hears Godâs words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.â
Before Abraham Was, I AM
48Â Then the Jews answered and said to Him, âDo we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and (BK)have a demon?â
49Â Jesus answered, âI do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and (BL)you dishonor Me. 50Â And (BM)I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51Â Most assuredly, I say to you, (BN)if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.â
52Â Then the Jews said to Him, âNow we know that You (BO)have a demon! (BP)Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, âIf anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.â 53Â Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. (BQ)Who do You make Yourself out to be?â
54Â Jesus answered, (BR)âIf I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. (BS)It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is [o]your God. 55Â Yet (BT)you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, âI do not know Him,â I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and (BU)keep His word. 56Â Your father Abraham (BV)rejoiced to see My day, (BW)and he saw it and was glad.â
57Â Then the Jews said to Him, âYou are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?â
58Â Jesus said to them, âMost assuredly, I say to you, (BX)before Abraham was, (BY)I AM.â
59Â Then (BZ)they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, (CA)going[p] through the midst of them, and so passed by.

John 8
New International Version
8Â 1Â but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.(A)
2Â At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.(B) 3Â The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4Â and said to Jesus, âTeacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5Â In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(C) Now what do you say?â 6Â They were using this question as a trap,(D) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(E)
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7Â When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, âLet any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(F) at her.â(G) 8Â Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9Â At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10Â Jesus straightened up and asked her, âWoman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?â
11Â âNo one, sir,â she said.
âThen neither do I condemn you,â(H) Jesus declared. âGo now and leave your life of sin.â(I)
Dispute Over Jesusâ Testimony
12Â When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, âI am(J) the light of the world.(K) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.â(L)
13Â The Pharisees challenged him, âHere you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.â(M)
14Â Jesus answered, âEven if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(N) But you have no idea where I come from(O) or where I am going. 15Â You judge by human standards;(P) I pass judgment on no one.(Q) 16Â But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(R) 17Â In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(S) 18Â I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.â(T)
19Â Then they asked him, âWhere is your father?â
âYou do not know me or my Father,â(U) Jesus replied. âIf you knew me, you would know my Father also.â(V) 20Â He spoke these words while teaching(W) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(X) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(Y)
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
21Â Once more Jesus said to them, âI am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(Z) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.â(AA)
22Â This made the Jews ask, âWill he kill himself? Is that why he says, âWhere I go, you cannot comeâ?â
23Â But he continued, âYou are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(AB) 24Â I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(AC) you will indeed die in your sins.â
25Â âWho are you?â they asked.
âJust what I have been telling you from the beginning,â Jesus replied. 26Â âI have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(AD) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.â(AE)
27Â They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28Â So Jesus said, âWhen you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(AF) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(AG) 29Â The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(AH) for I always do what pleases him.â(AI) 30Â Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(AJ)
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesusâ Opponents Are
31Â To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, âIf you hold to my teaching,(AK) you are really my disciples. 32Â Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.â(AL)
33Â They answered him, âWe are Abrahamâs descendants(AM) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?â
34Â Jesus replied, âVery truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(AN) 35Â Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(AO) 36Â So if the Son sets you free,(AP) you will be free indeed. 37Â I know that you are Abrahamâs descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(AQ) because you have no room for my word. 38Â I am telling you what I have seen in the Fatherâs presence,(AR) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b]â(AS)
39Â âAbraham is our father,â they answered.
âIf you were Abrahamâs children,â(AT) said Jesus, âthen you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40Â As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(AU) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(AV) Abraham did not do such things. 41Â You are doing the works of your own father.â(AW)
âWe are not illegitimate children,â they protested. âThe only Father we have is God himself.â(AX)
42Â Jesus said to them, âIf God were your Father, you would love me,(AY) for I have come here from God.(AZ) I have not come on my own;(BA) God sent me.(BB) 43Â Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44Â You belong to your father, the devil,(BC) and you want to carry out your fatherâs desires.(BD) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(BE) 45Â Yet because I tell the truth,(BF) you do not believe me! 46Â Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why donât you believe me? 47Â Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(BG) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.â
Jesusâ Claims About Himself
48Â The Jews answered him, âArenât we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(BH) and demon-possessed?â(BI)
49Â âI am not possessed by a demon,â said Jesus, âbut I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50Â I am not seeking glory for myself;(BJ) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51Â Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.â(BK)
52Â At this they exclaimed, âNow we know that you are demon-possessed!(BL) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53Â Are you greater than our father Abraham?(BM) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?â
54Â Jesus replied, âIf I glorify myself,(BN) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(BO) 55Â Though you do not know him,(BP) I know him.(BQ) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(BR) 56Â Your father Abraham(BS) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(BT) and was glad.â
57Â âYou are not yet fifty years old,â they said to him, âand you have seen Abraham!â
58Â âVery truly I tell you,â Jesus answered, âbefore Abraham was born,(BU) I am!â(BV) 59Â At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(BW) but Jesus hid himself,(BX) slipping away from the temple grounds.
John 8
English Standard Version
8Â 1Â but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2Â (A)Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and (B)he sat down and taught them. 3Â The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4Â they said to him, âTeacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5Â Now (C)in the Law, Moses commanded us (D)to stone such women. So what do you say?â 6Â This they said (E)to test him, (F)that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7Â And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, (G)âLet him who is without sin among you (H)be the first to throw a stone at her.â 8Â And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9Â But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10Â Jesus stood up and said to her, âWoman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?â 11Â She said, âNo one, Lord.â And Jesus said, (I)âNeither do I condemn you; go, and from now on (J)sin no more.â]]
I Am the Light of the World
12Â (K)Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, (L)âI am the light of the world. Whoever (M)follows me will not (N)walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.â 13Â So the Pharisees said to him, (O)âYou are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.â 14Â Jesus answered, âEven if I do bear witness about myself, (P)my testimony is true, for I know (Q)where I came from and (R)where I am going, but (S)you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15Â (T)You judge according to the flesh; (U)I judge no one. 16Â Yet even if I do judge, (V)my judgment is true, for (W)it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father[a] who sent me. 17Â (X)In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18Â I am the one who bears witness about myself, and (Y)the Father who sent me bears witness about me.â 19Â They said to him therefore, âWhere is your Father?â Jesus answered, (Z)âYou know neither me nor my Father. (AA)If you knew me, you would know my Father also.â 20Â These words he spoke in (AB)the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but (AC)no one arrested him, because (AD)his hour had not yet come.
21Â So he said to them again, (AE)âI am going away, and (AF)you will seek me, and (AG)you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.â 22Â So the Jews said, (AH)âWill he kill himself, since he says, âWhere I am going, you cannot comeâ?â 23Â He said to them, (AI)âYou are from below; I am from above. (AJ)You are of this world; (AK)I am not of this world. 24Â I told you that you (AL)would die in your sins, for (AM)unless you believe that (AN)I am he you will die in your sins.â 25Â So they said to him, (AO)âWho are you?â Jesus said to them, âJust what I have been telling you from the beginning. 26Â I have much to say about you and much to judge, but (AP)he who sent me is true, and I declare (AQ)to the world (AR)what I have heard from him.â 27Â They did not understand that (AS)he had been speaking to them about the Father. 28Â So Jesus said to them, âWhen you have (AT)lifted up the Son of Man, (AU)then you will know that (AV)I am he, and that (AW)I do nothing on my own authority, but (AX)speak just as the Father taught me. 29Â And (AY)he who sent me is with me. (AZ)He has not left me alone, for (BA)I always do the things that are pleasing to him.â 30Â As he was saying these things, (BB)many believed in him.
The Truth Will Set You Free
31Â So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, (BC)âIf you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32Â and you will (BD)know the truth, and the truth (BE)will set you free.â 33Â They answered him, (BF)âWe are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, âYou will become freeâ?â
34Â Jesus answered them, âTruly, truly, I say to you, (BG)everyone who practices sin is a slave[b] to sin. 35Â (BH)The slave does not remain in the house forever; (BI)the son remains forever. 36Â So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37Â I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet (BJ)you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38Â (BK)I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard (BL)from your father.â
You Are of Your Father the Devil
39Â They answered him, (BM)âAbraham is our father.â Jesus said to them, (BN)âIf you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40Â but now (BO)you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth (BP)that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41Â You are doing the works your father did.â They said to him, (BQ)âWe were not born of sexual immorality. We have (BR)one Fatherâeven God.â 42Â Jesus said to them, (BS)âIf God were your Father, you would love me, for (BT)I came from God and (BU)I am here. (BV)I came not of my own accord, but (BW)he sent me. 43Â (BX)Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot (BY)bear to hear my word. 44Â (BZ)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. (CA)He was a murderer from the beginning, and (CB)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. (CC)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45Â But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46Â Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47Â (CD)Whoever is of God hears the words of God. (CE)The reason why you do not hear them is that (CF)you are not of God.â
Before Abraham Was, I Am
48Â The Jews answered him, âAre we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and (CG)have a demon?â 49Â Jesus answered, âI do not have a demon, but (CH)I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50Â Yet (CI)I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51Â Truly, truly, (CJ)I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never (CK)see death.â 52Â The Jews said to him, âNow we know that you have a demon! (CL)Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet (CM)you say, âIf anyone keeps my word, he will never (CN)taste death.â 53Â (CO)Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?â 54Â Jesus answered, (CP)âIf I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. (CQ)It is my Father who glorifies me, (CR)of whom you say, âHe is our God.â[c] 55Â But (CS)you have not known him. (CT)I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be (CU)a liar (CV)like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. 56Â (CW)Your father Abraham (CX)rejoiced (CY)that he would see my day. (CZ)He saw it and was glad.â 57Â So the Jews said to him, âYou are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?â[d] 58Â Jesus said to them, âTruly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, (DA)I am.â 59Â So (DB)they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
