³⁷ I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet ^(A)you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. ^38 (B)I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard ^(C)from your father.”

You Are of Your Father the Devil

³⁹ They answered him, ^(D)“Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, ^(E)“If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, ⁴⁰ but now ^(F)you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth ^(G)that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.

The Call of Abram

12 Now ^(A)the Lord said^[a] to Abram, “Go from your country^[b] and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. ^2 (B)And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. ^3 (C)I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and ^(D)in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”^[c]

Isaac's Birth Promised

¹⁵ And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah^[a] shall be her name. ¹⁶ I will bless her, and moreover, I will ^(A)give^[b] you a son by her. I will bless her, and ^(B)she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”

¹⁵ And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven ¹⁶ and said, ^(A)“By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, ¹⁷ I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring ^(B)as the stars of heaven and ^(C)as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess ^(D)the gate of his^[a] enemies, ¹⁸ and ^(E)in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, ^(F)because you have obeyed my voice.”

¹⁵ And thus Abraham,^{[a] (A)}having patiently waited, obtained the promise.
