⁴⁶ For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me. ⁴⁷ But if you don’t believe his writings,^(A) how will you believe My words?”^(B)

³⁴ “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. ³⁵ By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love^(A) for one another.”

Peter’s Denials Predicted

³⁶ “Lord,” Simon Peter said to Him, “where are You going?”

Jesus answered, “Where I am going^(B) you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later.”

³⁷ “Lord,” Peter asked, “why can’t I follow You now? I will lay down my life^(C) for You!”^(D)

³⁸ Jesus replied, “Will you lay down your life for Me? I assure you: A rooster will not crow until you have denied Me three times.

Take Up Your Cross

³⁴ Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself,^(A) take up his cross,^(B) and follow Me.^{(C) 35} For whoever wants to save^(D) his life will lose it,^(E) but whoever loses^(F) his life^(G) because of Me^(H) and the gospel^(I) will save it.^{(J) 36} For what does it benefit^(K) a man to gain^(L) the whole world^(M) yet lose^(N) his life?^{(O) 37} What can a man give in exchange for his life?^{(P) 38} For whoever is ashamed^(Q) of Me and of My words^(R) in this adulterous and sinful^(S) generation,^(T) the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory^(U) of His Father^(V) with the holy^(W) angels.”^(X)
