³¹ It was the day of Preparation. The coming sabbath was a very special one, and the Judaeans were anxious that the bodies should not remain on the cross during the sabbath. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken, and their bodies taken away.

³² So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the men who were crucified with Jesus, first the one, then the other. ³³ But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn’t break his legs.
