Now (A)the Jews' Feast of (B)Booths was at hand. (C)So his brothers[a] said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, (D)show yourself to the world.” (E)For not even (F)his brothers believed in him. Jesus said to them, (G)“My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but (H)it hates me because I testify about it that (I)its works are evil. You go up to the feast. I am not[b] going up to this feast, for (J)my time has not yet fully come.” After saying this, he remained in Galilee.

10 But after (K)his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.

But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles(A) was near, Jesus’ brothers(B) said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” For even his own brothers did not believe in him.(C)

Therefore Jesus told them, “My time(D) is not yet here; for you any time will do. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me(E) because I testify that its works are evil.(F) You go to the festival. I am not[a] going up to this festival, because my time(G) has not yet fully come.” After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.

10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.

A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus

51 When the days drew near for (A)him to be taken up, (B)he set his face (C)to go to Jerusalem. 52 And (D)he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of (E)the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53 But (F)the people did not receive him, because (G)his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell (H)fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”[a] 55 But he turned and rebuked them.[b] 56 And they went on to another village.

But as for you, go and (L)proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, (M)but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62 Jesus said to him, (N)“No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Samaritan Opposition

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(A) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(B) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(C) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(D) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[a]?”(E) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus(F)

57 As they were walking along the road,(G) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(H) has no place to lay his head.”

59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(I)

But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(J)

61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(K)

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
