Het tweede antwoord van God
40 Toen antwoordde de Heer Job vanuit het onweer. Hij zei:
2 Ga nu als een man op je benen staan,
dan zal Ik je een paar vragen stellen.
Ik wil van jou daarop een antwoord krijgen.
3 Wil jij beweren dat Ik niet eerlijk ben?
Vind jij dat Ik ongelijk heb,
omdat je zelf gelijk wil hebben?
4 Ben jij soms zo sterk als Ik?
Kun jij net zo met je stem donderen als Ik?
5 Laat Mij nu maar eens zien hoe geweldig je bent.
Bekleed je met macht en majesteit.
6 Straf dan de mensen die zich niets van Mij aantrekken.
Werp ze allemaal in het stof.
7 Verneder alle trotse en eigenwijze mensen.
Verpletter de schurken allemaal onmiddellijk.
8 Bedek hen met aarde,
sluit hen op in het dodenrijk.
9 Dan zal ook Ik jou prijzen,
omdat jij hen met je eigen kracht overwonnen hebt.
10 Kijk eens naar de behemot,[a]
die Ik gemaakt heb net zoals Ik jou heb gemaakt.
Hij eet gras als een koe.
11 Kijk eens wat een sterke poten hij heeft.
Kijk eens wat een gespierde buik!
12 Hij heeft een staart als een cederboom.
De spieren op zijn dijbenen zijn te zien.
13 Zijn ribben zijn zo sterk als koperen buizen,
zijn botten zo sterk als ijzeren staven.
14 Het is één van de geweldigste dieren die Ik heb gemaakt.
Alleen Ikzelf kan hem bedwingen.
15 Hij leeft van wat er groeit in de bergen,
waar de wilde dieren spelen.
16 Hij verschuilt zich in de schaduw van de bomen,
tussen het riet van het moeras.
17 De boomtakken geven hem schaduw.
Hij ligt midden tussen de wilgen.
18 Al stroomt de rivier nog zo snel, hij is er niet bang voor.
Hij zou de hele rivier wel kunnen opdrinken.
19 Wie durft hem bij de kop te grijpen?
Wie durft een ring door zijn snuit te halen om hem te vangen?
20 Kun jij een leviatan[b] met een vishaak optrekken?
Kun jij hem met een hengel uit het water halen?
21 Kun jij een ring door zijn neus steken,
of een haak door zijn kaak slaan?
22 Zal hij je smeken om hem met rust te laten?
Zal hij proberen om je met vriendelijke woorden over te halen?
23 Zal hij proberen een verbond met je te sluiten
om voortaan voor jou te werken?
24 Kun je met hem spelen zoals je met een vogeltje speelt?
Kun je hem vastbinden als huisdier voor je kinderen?
25 Zullen vrienden hem klaarmaken als maaltijd?
Zullen ze hem te koop aanbieden aan de handelaars?
26 Kun je hem doorsteken met speren,
of een harpoen in zijn kop steken?
27 Leg je hand eens op zijn kop.
Kijk wat er gebeurt, en je doet het nooit meer.
28 Als je denkt hem te kunnen vangen, vergis je je!
Alleen al als je hem ziet, val je van schrik achterover. (lees verder)

- Job 40:10 Het is niet duidelijk wat voor soort dier er met de 'behemot' bedoeld wordt. In de meeste vertalingen van het boek JOB wordt dit Hebreeuwse woord vertaald met nijlpaard. Maar een aantal dingen in de tekst maken dat wat onwaarschijnlijk. Bijvoorbeeld: een nijlpaard heeft maar een heel klein staartje en zijn spieren zijn niet echt te zien. Ook is een nijlpaard duidelijk niet het 'geweldigste dier,' want een olifant is veel groter. Ook komen nijlpaarden niet in de bergen voor.
- Job 40:20 Het is niet duidelijk welk dier er met de 'leviatan' bedoeld wordt. In de meeste vertalingen van het boek JOB wordt dit Hebreeuwse woord vertaald met krokodil. Maar een aantal dingen in de tekst maken dat wat onwaarschijnlijk. Bijvoorbeeld dat hij zo vreselijk angstaanjagend is, dat hij niet te doden zou zijn met zwaard, speer of pijl en boog, en vooral: dat hij neerkijkt op alle wilde dieren! Dat is moeilijk voor een dier op zulke korte poten.

40 И Вечный сказал Аюбу из бури:
2 – Препояшь себя, как мужчина;
Я буду спрашивать, а ты отвечай.
3 Опровергнешь ли ты Мой суд?
Обвинишь ли Меня, чтобы себя оправдать?
4 Есть ли у тебя мощь, как у Всевышнего,
и гремит ли голос твой, как у Него?
5 Что ж, укрась себя славой и величием,
оденься в честь и великолепие.
6 Дай волю ярости своего гнева,
посмотри на гордого и смири его,
7 посмотри на надменного и унизь его,
придави злодеев к земле.
8 Зарой их всех вместе в землю
и окутай их лица тьмой.
9 Тогда и Сам Я тебе скажу,
что твоя правая рука тебя спасла.
10 Присмотрись к дивному зверю[a]:
Я создал его, как и тебя;
он ест траву, как вол.
11 Что за сила в бёдрах его,
что за крепость в мускулах живота!
12 Машет он своим хвостом, как кедром;
жилы бёдер его сплетены.
13 Ноги его, как медные трубы,
кости его, как железные прутья.
14 Он величайшее из творений Всевышнего;
лишь его Творец может меч к нему поднести.
15 Пищу ему дают горы,
где резвятся все дикие звери.
16 В зарослях лотоса он лежит,
скрыт среди тростников болотных.
17 Лотосы прячут его в тени;
ивы у ручья его окружают.
18 Бушует река – не страшно ему;
невозмутим он, хоть хлынь ему в пасть Иордан.
19 Кто схватит его, когда он смотрит?
Кто багор в его нос проденет?
20 Можешь ли вытащить удочкой левиафана[b]
и связать верёвкой его язык?
21 Проденешь ли канат ему в нос
и пронзишь ли челюсть его крюком?
22 Станет ли он тебя умолять
и кротко с тобой говорить?
23 Заключит ли он с тобой договор,
что пойдёт в услужение к тебе навек?
24 Станешь ли с ним играть, как с птичкой;
привяжешь ли на забаву служанкам?
25 Станут ли рыбаки о нём торговаться,
купцы – его тушу делить?
26 Пронзишь ли ты кожу его копьём
и рыбацкой острогой – голову?
27 Тронь его раз – и больше не станешь;
никогда не забудешь ту битву!

40 Moreover the Lord answered Job, and said,
2 Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.
3 Then Job answered the Lord, and said,
4 Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.
5 Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.
6 Then answered the Lord unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
7 Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
8 Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?
9 Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?
10 Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.
11 Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him.
12 Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.
13 Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret.
14 Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee.
15 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.
16 Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.
17 He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.
18 His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron.
19 He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
20 Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.
21 He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.
22 The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.
23 Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.
24 He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares.

God’s Power and Wisdom
40 Moreover the Lord (A)answered Job, and said:
2 “Shall (B)the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him?
He who (C)rebukes God, let him answer it.”
Job’s Response to God
3 Then Job answered the Lord and said:
4 “Behold,(D) I am vile;
What shall I answer You?
(E)I lay my hand over my mouth.
5 Once I have spoken, but I will not answer;
Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”
God’s Challenge to Job
6 (F)Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
8 “Would(I) you indeed [b]annul My judgment?
Would you condemn Me that you may be justified?
9 Have you an arm like God?
Or can you thunder with (J)a voice like His?
10 (K)Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor,
And array yourself with glory and beauty.
11 Disperse the rage of your wrath;
Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him.
12 Look on everyone who is (L)proud, and bring him low;
Tread down the wicked in their place.
13 Hide them in the dust together,
Bind their faces in hidden darkness.
14 Then I will also confess to you
That your own right hand can save you.
15 “Look now at the [c]behemoth, which I made along with you;
He eats grass like an ox.
16 See now, his strength is in his hips,
And his power is in his stomach muscles.
17 He moves his tail like a cedar;
The sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.
18 His bones are like beams of bronze,
His ribs like bars of iron.
19 He is the first of the (M)ways of God;
Only He who made him can bring near His sword.
20 Surely the mountains (N)yield food for him,
And all the beasts of the field play there.
21 He lies under the lotus trees,
In a covert of reeds and marsh.
22 The lotus trees cover him with their shade;
The willows by the brook surround him.
23 Indeed the river may rage,
Yet he is not disturbed;
He is confident, though the Jordan gushes into his mouth,
24 Though he takes it in his eyes,
Or one pierces his nose with a snare.
