4 Y respondió Elifaz el temanita, y dijo:

²Si probáremos a hablarte, te será molesto; pero ¿quién podrá detener las palabras?

³He aquí, tú enseñabas a muchos, y las manos debilitadas corroborabas.

⁴Al que vacilaba, enderezaban tus palabras, y las rodillas de los que arrodillaban esforzabas.

⁵Mas ahora que a ti te ha venido, te es molesto; y cuando ha llegado hasta ti, te turbas.

⁶¿No es éste tu temor, tu confianza, tu esperanza, y la integridad de tus caminos?

⁷Acuérdate ahora, ¿quién haya sido inocente que se perdiera? Y ¿adónde los rectos han sido cortados?

⁸Como yo he visto que los que aran iniquidad y siembran injuria, la siegan.

⁹Perecen por el aliento de Dios, y por el espíritu de su furor son consumidos.

¹⁰El bramido del león, y la voz del león, y los dientes de los leoncillos son arrancados.

¹¹El león viejo perece por falta de presa, y los hijos del león son esparcidos.

¹²¶ El negocio también me era a mí oculto; mas mi oído ha percibido algo de ello.

¹³En imaginaciones de visiones nocturnas, cuando el sueño cae sobre los hombres,

¹⁴me sobrevino un espanto y un temblor, que estremeció todos mis huesos.

¹⁵Y un espíritu que pasó por delante de mí, hizo que se erizara el vello de mi carne.

¹⁶Se paró un fantasma delante de mis ojos, cuyo rostro yo no conocí, y quedo, oí que decía:

¹⁷¿Por ventura será el hombre más justo que Dios? ¿Será el varón más limpio que el que lo hizo?

¹⁸He aquí que en sus esclavos no confía, y en sus ángeles halló locura.

¹⁹¡Cuánto más en los que habitan en casas de lodo, cuyo fundamento está en el polvo, y que serán quebrantados de la polilla!

²⁰De la mañana a la tarde son quebrantados, y se pierden para siempre, sin haber quien lo considere.

²¹¿Su hermosura, no se pierde con ellos mismos? Mueren, y no lo saben.

Eliphaz: Job Has Sinned

4 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

²“If one attempts a word with you, will you become weary?
But who can withhold himself from speaking?
³Surely you have instructed many,
And you ^(A)have strengthened weak hands.
⁴Your words have upheld him who was stumbling,
And you ^(B)have strengthened the ^[a]feeble knees;
⁵But now it comes upon you, and you are weary;
It touches you, and you are troubled.
⁶Is not ^(C)your reverence ^(D)your confidence?
And the integrity of your ways your hope?

⁷“Remember now, ^(E)who ever perished being innocent?
Or where were the upright ever cut off?
⁸Even as I have seen,
^(F)Those who plow iniquity
And sow trouble reap the same.
⁹By the blast of God they perish,
And by the breath of His anger they are consumed.
¹⁰The roaring of the lion,
The voice of the fierce lion,
And ^(G)the teeth of the young lions are broken.
¹¹^(H)The old lion perishes for lack of prey,
And the cubs of the lioness are scattered.

¹²“Now a word was secretly brought to me,
And my ear received a whisper of it.
¹³^(I)In disquieting thoughts from the visions of the night,
When deep sleep falls on men,
¹⁴Fear came upon me, and ^(J)trembling,
Which made all my bones shake.
¹⁵Then a spirit passed before my face;
The hair on my body stood up.
¹⁶It stood still,
But I could not discern its appearance.
A form was before my eyes;
There was silence;
Then I heard a voice saying:
¹⁷‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God?
Can a man be more pure than his Maker?
¹⁸If He ^(K)puts no trust in His servants,
If He charges His angels with error,
¹⁹How much more those who dwell in houses of clay,
Whose foundation is in the dust,
Who are crushed before a moth?
²⁰^(L)They are broken in pieces from morning till evening;
They perish forever, with no one regarding.
²¹Does not their own excellence go away?
They die, even without wisdom.’

    Yet who can keep from speaking?
³Behold, you have instructed many,

⁴Your words have upheld him who was stumbling,

⁵But now it has come to you, and you are impatient;
    it touches you, and you are dismayed.

    and the integrity of your ways your hope?
