35 Elihu fortsatte. Han sade:
2 Tror du det är rätt att säga:
"Min rättfärdighet är större än Guds",
3 eftersom du säger: "Vad gagnar den mig?
Har jag mer nytta av den än av min synd?"
4 Jag skall svara dig och dina vänner.
5 Blicka upp mot himlen och se,
lägg märke till skyarna högt över dig.
6 Om du syndar,
vad tillfogar du då honom?
Om dina överträdelser är många,
vad skadar det honom?
7 Om du är rättfärdig,
vad ger du honom,
vad får han ta emot av din hand?
8 Din ogudaktighet påverkar människor som är lika dig,
och din rättfärdighet människobarn.
9 Man klagar över allt förtryck,
man ropar om hjälp mot de mäktigas arm.
10 Men ingen frågar: "Var är Gud, som skapat mig,
han som låter lovsånger ljuda i natten,
11 han som ger oss mer insikt än jordens djur
och mer vishet än himlens fåglar?"
12 Man ropar, men han svarar inte
på grund av de ondas högmod.
13 Sannerligen, Gud hör ej på tomma böner,
den Allsmäktige bryr sig ej om dem.
14 Även när du säger
att du inte ser honom,
ligger din sak inför honom,
och du bör vänta på honom.
15 Men nu, då han inte straffar i vrede
och inte bryr sig så mycket om synden,
16 spärrar Job upp sin mun till fåfängt tal,
utan insikt hopar han ord.

Sin’s impact
35 Elihu continued:
2 Do you think it right?
You say, “I’m more just than God.”
3 Yet you ask, “What does it benefit you?
What have I gained by avoiding sin?”
4 I’ll answer you,
and your friends along with you.
5 Look at the heavens and see;
scan the clouds high over you.
6 If you’ve sinned, how have you affected God?
Your offenses have multiplied;
what have you done to him?
7 If you are righteous,
what do you give to him?
Or what does he receive from your hand?
8 Your evil affects others like you,
and your righteousness affects fellow human beings.
9 People cry out because of heavy oppression;
shout under the power of the mighty.
10 But no one says, “Where is God my maker;
who gives songs in the night;
11 who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth,
makes us wiser than the birds in the sky?”
12 Then they cry out; but he doesn’t answer,
because of the pride of the wicked.
13 God certainly doesn’t respond to a deceitful cry;
the Almighty doesn’t pay attention to it.
14 Although you say that you don’t see him,
the case is before him;
so wait anxiously for him.
15 Even though his anger is now held back,
a person doesn’t know it’s only delayed.[a]
16 So Job mouths emptiness;
he piles up ignorant words.

35 Elihu spake moreover, and said,
2 Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God's?
3 For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?
4 I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee.
5 Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou.
6 If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?
7 If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?
8 Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man.
9 By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.
10 But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;
11 Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?
12 There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.
13 Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.
14 Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.
15 But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity:
16 Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.
