29 Job again took up his parable, and said,
2 “Oh that I were as in the months of old,
as in the days when God watched over me;
3 when his lamp shone on my head,
and by his light I walked through darkness,
4 as I was in my prime,
when the friendship of God was in my tent,
5 when the Almighty was yet with me,
and my children were around me,
6 when my steps were washed with butter,
and the rock poured out streams of oil for me,
7 when I went out to the city gate,
when I prepared my seat in the street.
8 The young men saw me and hid themselves.
The aged rose up and stood.
9 The princes refrained from talking,
and laid their hand on their mouth.
10 The voice of the nobles was hushed,
and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth.
11 For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me,
and when the eye saw me, it commended me,
12 because I delivered the poor who cried,
and the fatherless also, who had no one to help him,
13 the blessing of him who was ready to perish came on me,
and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me.
My justice was as a robe and a diadem.
15 I was eyes to the blind,
and feet to the lame.
16 I was a father to the needy.
I researched the cause of him whom I didn’t know.
17 I broke the jaws of the unrighteous
and plucked the prey out of his teeth.
18 Then I said, ‘I will die in my own house,
I will count my days as the sand.
19 My root is spread out to the waters.
The dew lies all night on my branch.
20 My glory is fresh in me.
My bow is renewed in my hand.’
21 “Men listened to me, waited,
and kept silence for my counsel.
22 After my words they didn’t speak again.
My speech fell on them.
23 They waited for me as for the rain.
Their mouths drank as with the spring rain.
24 I smiled on them when they had no confidence.
They didn’t reject the light of my face.
25 I chose out their way, and sat as chief.
I lived as a king in the army,
as one who comforts the mourners.

29 Then[a] Job again took up his discourse and said,

3 when his shining lamp was over my head—
by his light I walked through darkness—
4 as when I was in the days of my prime,
when God’s confiding was over my house,[c]
5 when Shaddaiwas still with me,
my children were all around me,
6 when my paths were washed in sour milk,
and the rock poured out streams of oil for me.
7 “At my going out the gate to the city,
I secured my seat in the square.
8 Young men saw me and stepped aside,
and the aged rose up and stood.
9 Officials refrained from talking,
and they laid their hand on their mouth.
10 The voices[d] of nobles were hushed,
and their tongue stuck to their palate.
11 “When the ear heard and commended me,
and the eye saw and testified in support of me
12 because I saved the needy who cried for help,
and I saved[e] the orphan for whom there was no helper.
13 The blessing of the wretched came upon me,
and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me;
my justice was like a robe and a headband.
15 “I was eyes to the blind,
and I was feet to the lame.
16 I was a father to the poor,
and I investigated the stranger’s[f] legal dispute.
17 And I broke the evil one’s jaw bones,
and I made his prey drop from his teeth.
18 “And I thought, ‘I will pass away in my nest,
and like the phoenix I shall multiply my days.
19 My roots were open to water,
and dew spent the night on my branches;
20 My glory was new with me,
and I was revitalized regularly.’[g]
21 “They listened to me and waited,
and they kept silent for my counsel.
22 After my word, they did not speak again,
and my word dropped down like dew upon them.
23 And they waited for me as for the rain,
and they opened their mouth wide as for the spring rain.
24 I smiled for them when they had no confidence in anything,
and they did not extinguish the light of my face.
25 I chose their way, and I sat as head,
and I dwelled like a king among the troops,
like one who comforts mourners.

4 As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
6 When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
7 When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
8 The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.
9 The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.
10 The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
11 When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:
12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.
16 I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.
17 And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.
18 Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.

21 Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
22 After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.

24 If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
25 I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.

3 when his lamp shone on my head

4 Oh, for the days when I was in my prime,
when God’s intimate friendship(E) blessed my house,(F)
5 when the Almighty was still with me
and my children(G) were around me,(H)
6 when my path was drenched with cream(I)
and the rock(J) poured out for me streams of olive oil.(K)
7 “When I went to the gate(L) of the city
and took my seat in the public square,
8 the young men saw me and stepped aside(M)
and the old men rose to their feet;(N)
9 the chief men refrained from speaking(O)
and covered their mouths with their hands;(P)
10 the voices of the nobles were hushed,(Q)
and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.(R)
11 Whoever heard me spoke well of me,
and those who saw me commended me,(S)
12 because I rescued the poor(T) who cried for help,
and the fatherless(U) who had none to assist them.(V)
13 The one who was dying blessed me;(W)
I made the widow’s(X) heart sing.
14 I put on righteousness(Y) as my clothing;
justice was my robe and my turban.(Z)

21 “People listened to me expectantly,

23 They waited for me as for showers

24 When I smiled at them, they scarcely believed it;

29 E Jó continuou a sua fala e disse:
2 “Ah! Se eu pudesse voltar meses atrás,
para os dias em que Deus me protegia!
3 Naquele tempo, Deus iluminava o meu caminho,
e com a sua luz eu podia andar na escuridão.
4 Naqueles dias, eu estava bem de vida,
e a amizade de Deus era a proteção do meu lar.
5 O Todo-Poderoso estava comigo,
e os meus filhos viviam ao meu redor.
6 Em casa sempre havia leite à vontade
e também azeite, tirado das oliveiras plantadas entre as pedras.
7 Quando eu saía para a reunião do tribunal
e me assentava entre os juízes,
8 os moços me viam e abriam passagem,
e os idosos se punham de pé.
9 As pessoas mais importantes paravam de falar
e ficavam em silêncio.
10 As autoridades se calavam;
não diziam mais nada.
Eu era pai dos pobres
11 “Quem me ouvia falar me dava parabéns;
os que me viam falavam bem de mim,
12 pois eu ajudava os pobres que pediam ajuda
e cuidava dos órfãos que não tinham quem os protegesse.
13 Pessoas que estavam na miséria me abençoavam,
e as viúvas se alegravam com o meu auxílio.
14 A minha justiça e a minha honestidade faziam parte de mim;
eram como a roupa que eu uso todos os dias.
15 Eu era olhos para os cegos
e pés para os aleijados.
16 Era pai dos pobres
e defensor dos direitos dos estrangeiros.
17 Eu acabava com o poder dos exploradores
e livrava das suas garras as vítimas.
Todas as pessoas me davam atenção
18 “Eu pensava assim:
‘Vou viver uma vida longa
e morrer em casa, com todo o conforto.
19 Serei como uma árvore de raízes que chegam até a água,
uma árvore que todas as noites é molhada pelo orvalho.
20 Todos só falarão bem de mim,
e eu serei sempre vigoroso e forte.’
21 Todas as pessoas me davam atenção
e em silêncio escutavam os meus conselhos.
22 Quando acabava de falar, ninguém discordava.
As minhas palavras entravam na cabeça deles
como se fossem gotas de água na areia.
23 Todos as esperavam ansiosos,
como se espera a chuva no tempo de calor.
24 Eu sorria para aqueles que tinham perdido a esperança;
o meu rosto alegre lhes dava coragem.
25 Eu era como um chefe,
decidindo o que eles deviam fazer;
eu os dirigia como um rei à frente do seu exército
e os consolava nas horas de aflição.
