29 Verder zei Job:
2 Was ik maar weer als vroeger,
in de tijd dat God me nog beschermde.
3 Toen liet Hij zijn licht op mij schijnen.
Daardoor was zelfs het donker licht om mij heen.
4 Was alles nog maar zoals toen ik nog jong was!
Toen ging God net zo vertrouwelijk met mij om als een vriend.
5 Toen was de Almachtige God nog met mij.
Mijn kinderen waren nog om me heen.
6 Toen had ik succes in alles wat ik deed.
Ik werd bijna vanzelf rijk.
7 Als ik naar de poort van de stad ging
om op mijn stoel tussen de wijze mannen te gaan zitten,[a]
8 dan gingen de jonge mannen weg, uit respect voor mij.
Hoogbejaarde mannen stonden eerbiedig voor mij op.
9 Leiders onderbraken hun gesprekken
en zwegen uit respect voor mij.
10 Iedereen zweeg,
niemand durfde nog iets te zeggen.
11 Iedereen bewonderde mijn wijsheid.
Iedereen zei goede dingen over mij.
12 Want ik hielp arme mensen die mij om hulp vroegen.
Weeskinderen werden door mij geholpen.
13 Ze waren me allemaal dankbaar.
Arme weduwen waren blij met mij.
14 Ik was eerlijk en rechtvaardig
in alles wat ik deed.
15 Ik stond altijd klaar
om blinden en kreupelen te helpen.
16 Als een vader zorgde ik voor de arme mensen.
Iedereen die met een rechtszaak kwam, behandelde ik eerlijk.
Ook als het vreemden waren.
17 Ik strafte de mensen die schuldig waren
en zorgde ervoor dat alles weer goed kwam voor hun slachtoffers.
18 Ik dacht dat het voor altijd goed met me zou gaan.
Dat ik een lang en gezond leven zou hebben.
19 Ik was als een boom die met zijn wortels altijd water vindt
en die met zijn takken drinkt van de dauw.
20 Alle dagen werd ik geëerd en gerespecteerd.
Alle dagen voelde ik me sterk.
21 De mensen luisterden naar mij.
Ze vroegen me om raad en om mijn mening.
22 Als ik die gegeven had,
had niemand er nog iets aan toe te voegen.
Wat ik gezegd had, was genoeg.
23 Ze wachtten op mij zoals ze op de regen wachtten.
Van mij verwachtten ze goede woorden,
zoals de regen zorgt voor een goede oogst.
24 Als ik hen toelachte, konden ze het maar nauwelijks geloven.
Altijd was ik vriendelijk tegen iedereen.
25 Ik leidde hen als een leider.
Ik voelde me als een koning die zijn leger aanvoert.

29 Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
2 Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;
3 When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;
4 As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
6 When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
7 When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
8 The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.
9 The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.
10 The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
11 When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:
12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.
16 I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.
17 And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.
18 Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.
19 My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.
20 My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.
21 Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
22 After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
23 And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
24 If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
25 I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.

3 when his lamp shone on my head

4 Oh, for the days when I was in my prime,
when God’s intimate friendship(E) blessed my house,(F)
5 when the Almighty was still with me
and my children(G) were around me,(H)
6 when my path was drenched with cream(I)
and the rock(J) poured out for me streams of olive oil.(K)
7 “When I went to the gate(L) of the city
and took my seat in the public square,
8 the young men saw me and stepped aside(M)
and the old men rose to their feet;(N)
