Job Speaks: My Friends Have Offered Useless Advice

26 Then Job replied to his friends,

“You have helped the person who has no power
and saved the arm that isn’t strong.
You have advised the person who has no wisdom
    and offered so much assistance.
To whom have you spoken these words,
and whose spirit has spoken through you?

God’s Power over Creation

“The souls of the dead tremble beneath the water,
and so do the creatures living there.
Sheol is naked in God’s presence,
    and Abaddon has no clothing.

“He stretches out his heavens[a] over empty space.
He hangs the earth on nothing whatsoever.
He holds the water in his thick clouds,
and the clouds don’t even split under its weight.
He covers his throne[b]
by spreading his cloud over it.
10 He marks the horizon on the surface of the water
at the boundary where light meets dark.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble
and are astonished when he yells at them.
12 With his power he calmed the sea.
With his insight he killed Rahab the sea monster.
13 With his wind the sky was cleared.
With his hand he stabbed the fleeing snake.

14 “These are only glimpses of what he does.
We only hear a whisper of him!
Who can understand the thunder of his power?”

Job Answers Bildad

26 Then Job answered:

“Bildad, what a great help you are to this tired, weary man!
    You have really supported me!
You have given such wonderful advice to this foolish man!
You have provided so much useful information![a]
Who helped you say these things?
Whose spirit inspired you to speak?

“The ghosts and their neighbors
in the underworld[b] shake with fear.
But God can see clearly into that place of death.
Death[c] is not hidden from God.
God stretched the northern sky over empty space.
He hung the earth on nothing.
He fills the thick clouds with water.
But he does not let its heavy weight break the clouds open.
He covers the face of the full moon.
He spreads his clouds over it and hides it.
10 He drew the horizon on the ocean,
like a circle where light and darkness meet.
11 The foundations that hold up the sky
shake with fear when God threatens them.
12 With his own power God calmed the sea.
With his wisdom he destroyed Rahab.
13 His breath made the skies clear.
His hand destroyed the snake that tried to get away.[d]
14 These are only a few of the amazing things God has done.
We hear only a small whisper of God’s thundering power.”

Footnotes

  1. Job 26:3 Job is being sarcastic here—showing by the way he speaks that he does not really mean it.
  2. Job 26:5 The ghosts … underworld Literally, “The ghosts under the water.” This refers to Sheol, the place of death.
  3. Job 26:6 Death Or “Abaddon,” a Hebrew name meaning “death” or “destruction.” See Rev. 9:11.
  4. Job 26:13 snake … get away Or “the escaping monster.” This might be another name for Rahab. See Isa. 27:1.

26 But Job answered and said,

How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength?

How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is?

To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee?

Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof.

Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.

He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.

He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.

He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it.

10 He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.

11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof.

12 He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud.

13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.

14 Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

Job: Man’s Frailty and God’s Majesty

26 But Job answered and said:

“How have you helped him who is without power?
How have you saved the arm that has no strength?
How have you counseled one who has no wisdom?
And how have you declared sound advice to many?
To whom have you uttered words?
And whose spirit came from you?

“The dead tremble,
Those under the waters and those inhabiting them.
(A)Sheol is naked before Him,
And Destruction has no covering.
(B)He stretches out the north over empty space;
He hangs the earth on nothing.
(C)He binds up the water in His thick clouds,
Yet the clouds [a]are not broken under it.
He covers the face of His throne,
And spreads His cloud over it.
10 (D)He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters,
At the boundary of light and darkness.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble,
And are [b]astonished at His rebuke.
12 (E)He stirs up the sea with His power,
And by His understanding He breaks up [c]the storm.
13 (F)By His Spirit He adorned the heavens;
His hand pierced (G)the fleeing serpent.
14 Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways,
And how small a whisper we hear of Him!
But the thunder of His power who can understand?”
