Job Says God Will Deal with the Wicked

21 Then Job [a]answered,

“Listen carefully to my speech,
And let this be your way of consolation.
“Bear with me that I may speak;
Then after I have spoken, you may (A)mock.
“As for me, is (B)my complaint [b]to man?
And (C)why should [c]I not be impatient?
“Look at me, and be astonished,
And (D)put your hand over your mouth.
“Even when I remember, I am disturbed,
And (E)horror takes hold of my flesh.
“Why (F)do the wicked still live,
Continue on, also become very (G)powerful?
“Their [d](H)descendants are established with them in their sight,
And their offspring before their eyes,
Their houses (I)are safe from fear,
And the rod of God is not on them.
10 “His ox mates [e]without fail;
His cow calves and does not abort.
11 “They send forth their little ones like the flock,
And their children skip about.
12 “They [f]sing to the timbrel and harp
And rejoice at the sound of the flute.
13 “They (J)spend their days in prosperity,
And [g]suddenly they go down to [h]Sheol.
14 “They say to God, ‘(K)Depart from us!
We do not even desire the knowledge of Your ways.
15 [i]Who is [j]the Almighty, that we should serve Him,
And (L)what would we gain if we entreat Him?’
16 “Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand;
The (M)counsel of the wicked is far from me.

17 “How often is (N)the lamp of the wicked put out,
Or does their (O)calamity fall on them?
Does [k]God apportion destruction in His anger?
18 “Are they as (P)straw before the wind,
And like (Q)chaff which the storm carries away?
19 You say, ‘(R)God stores away [l]a man’s iniquity for his sons.’
Let [m]God repay him so that he may know it.
20 “Let his (S)own eyes see his decay,
And let him (T)drink of the wrath of [n]the Almighty.
21 “For what does he care for his household [o]after him,
When the number of his months is cut off?
22 “Can anyone (U)teach God knowledge,
In that He (V)judges those on high?
23 “One (W)dies in his full strength,
Being wholly at ease and [p]satisfied;
24 His [q]sides are filled out with fat,
And the (X)marrow of his bones is moist,
25 While another dies with a bitter soul,
Never even [r]tasting anything good.
26 “Together they (Y)lie down in the dust,
And (Z)worms cover them.

27 “Behold, I know your thoughts,
And the plans by which you would wrong me.
28 “For you say, ‘Where is the house of (AA)the nobleman,
And where is the (AB)tent, the dwelling places of the wicked?’
29 “Have you not asked wayfaring men,
And do you not recognize their [s]witness?
30 “For the (AC)wicked is reserved for the day of calamity;
They will be led forth at (AD)the day of fury.
31 “Who will [t]confront him with his actions,
And who will repay him for what he has done?
32 “While he is carried to the grave,
Men will keep watch over his tomb.
33 “The (AE)clods of the valley will [u]gently cover him;
Moreover, (AF)all men will [v]follow after him,
While countless ones go before him.
34 “How then will you vainly (AG)comfort me,
For your answers remain full of [w]falsehood?”

Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job

22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite [x]responded,

“Can a vigorous (AH)man be of use to God,
Or a wise man be useful to himself?
“Is there any pleasure to [y]the Almighty if you are righteous,
Or profit if you make your ways perfect?
“Is it because of your [z]reverence that He reproves you,
That He (AI)enters into judgment against you?
“Is not (AJ)your wickedness great,
And your iniquities without end?
“For you have (AK)taken pledges of your brothers without cause,
And (AL)stripped [aa]men naked.
“To the weary you have (AM)given no water to drink,
And from the hungry you have (AN)withheld bread.
“But the earth (AO)belongs to the (AP)mighty man,
And (AQ)the honorable man dwells in it.
“You have sent (AR)widows away empty,
And the [ab]strength of the (AS)orphans has been crushed.
10 “Therefore (AT)snares surround you,
And sudden (AU)dread terrifies you,
11 Or (AV)darkness, so that you cannot see,
And an (AW)abundance of water covers you.

12 “Is not God (AX)in the height of heaven?
Look also at the [ac]distant stars, how high they are!
13 “You say, ‘(AY)What does God know?
Can He judge through the thick darkness?
14 (AZ)Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see;
And He walks on the [ad]vault of heaven.’
15 “Will you keep to the ancient path
Which (BA)wicked men have trod,
16 Who were snatched away (BB)before their time,
Whose (BC)foundations were [ae]washed away by a river?
17 “They (BD)said to God, ‘Depart from us!’
And ‘What can [af]the Almighty do to them?’
18 “Yet He (BE)filled their houses with good things;
But (BF)the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19 “The (BG)righteous see and are glad,
And the innocent mock them,
20 Saying, ‘Truly our adversaries are cut off,
And their [ag]abundance (BH)the fire has consumed.’

21 [ah](BI)Yield now and be at peace with Him;
Thereby good will come to you.
22 “Please receive [ai](BJ)instruction from His mouth
And establish His words in your heart.
23 “If you (BK)return to [aj]the Almighty, you will be [ak]restored;
If you (BL)remove unrighteousness far from your tent,
24 And (BM)place your [al]gold in the dust,
And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks,
25 Then [am]the Almighty will be your [an]gold
And choice silver to you.
26 “For then you will (BN)delight in [ao]the Almighty
And lift up your face to God.
27 “You will (BO)pray to Him, and (BP)He will hear you;
And you will pay your vows.
28 “You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you;
And (BQ)light will shine on your ways.
29 “When [ap]you are cast down, you will speak with [aq]confidence,
And the [ar](BR)humble person He will save.
30 “He will deliver one who is not innocent,
And he will be (BS)delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”

Job Says He Longs for God

23 Then Job [as]replied,

“Even today my (BT)complaint is rebellion;
[at]His hand is (BU)heavy despite my groaning.
“Oh that I knew where I might find Him,
That I might come to His seat!
“I would (BV)present my case before Him
And fill my mouth with arguments.
“I would learn the words which He would [au]answer,
And perceive what He would say to me.
“Would He contend with me by (BW)the greatness of His power?
No, surely He would pay attention to me.
“There the upright would (BX)reason with Him;
And I [av]would be (BY)delivered forever from my Judge.

“Behold, I go forward but He is not there,
And backward, but I (BZ)cannot perceive Him;
When He acts on the left, I cannot behold Him;
He turns on the right, I cannot see Him.
10 “But He knows the [aw]way I take;
When He has (CA)tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
11 “My foot has (CB)held fast to His path;
I have kept His way and not turned aside.
12 “I have not departed from the command of His lips;
I have treasured the (CC)words of His mouth [ax]more than my [ay]necessary food.
13 “But He is unique and who can turn Him?
And what His soul desires, that He does.
14 “For He performs what is appointed for me,
And many such decrees are with Him.
15 “Therefore, I would be dismayed at His presence;
When I consider, I am terrified of Him.
16 It is God who has made my (CD)heart faint,
And the Almighty who has dismayed me,
17 But I (CE)am not silenced by the darkness,
Nor (CF)deep gloom which covers me.

The Psalmist’s Profession of Uprightness.

A Psalm of David.

101 I will (A)sing of lovingkindness and [a]justice,
To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.
I will [b](B)give heed to the [c]blameless way.
When will You come to me?
I will walk within my house in the [d](C)integrity of my heart.
I will set no (D)worthless thing before my eyes;
I hate the [e]work of those who (E)fall away;
It shall not fasten its grip on me.
A (F)perverse heart shall depart from me;
I will know no evil.
Whoever secretly (G)slanders his neighbor, him I will [f]destroy;
No one who has a (H)haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.

My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me;
He who walks in a [g](I)blameless way is the one who will minister to me.
He who (J)practices deceit shall not dwell within my house;
He who speaks falsehood (K)shall not [h]maintain his position before me.
(L)Every morning I will [i](M)destroy all the wicked of the land,
So as to (N)cut off from the (O)city of the Lord all those who do iniquity.

Six Bowls of Wrath

16 Then I heard a loud voice from (A)the [a]temple, saying to the (B)seven angels, “Go and (C)pour out [b]on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”

So the first angel went and poured out his bowl [c](D)on the earth; and it became a loathsome and malignant (E)sore on the [d]people (F)who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

The second angel poured out his bowl (G)into the sea, and it became blood like that of a dead man; and every living [e]thing in the sea died.

Then the third angel poured out his bowl into the (H)rivers and the springs of waters; and they (I)became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters saying, “(J)Righteous are You, (K)who are and who were, O (L)Holy One, because You (M)judged these things; for they poured out (N)the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them (O)blood to drink. They [f]deserve it.” And I heard (P)the altar saying, “Yes, O (Q)Lord God, the Almighty, (R)true and righteous are Your judgments.”

The fourth angel poured out his bowl upon (S)the sun, (T)and it was given to it to scorch men with fire. Men were scorched with [g]fierce heat; and they (U)blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they (V)did not repent so as to (W)give Him glory.

10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the (X)throne of the beast, and his kingdom became (Y)darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain, 11 and they (Z)blasphemed the (AA)God of heaven because of their pains and their (AB)sores; and they (AC)did not repent of their deeds.

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the (AD)great river, the Euphrates; and (AE)its water was dried up, so that (AF)the way would be prepared for the kings (AG)from the [h]east.

Armageddon

13 And I saw coming out of the mouth of the (AH)dragon and out of the mouth of the (AI)beast and out of the mouth of the (AJ)false prophet, three (AK)unclean spirits like (AL)frogs; 14 for they are (AM)spirits of demons, (AN)performing signs, which go out to the kings of the (AO)whole [i]world, to (AP)gather them together for the war of the (AQ)great day of God, the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, (AR)I am coming like a thief. (AS)Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, (AT)so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.”) 16 And they (AU)gathered them together to the place which (AV)in Hebrew is called [j](AW)Har-Magedon.

Seventh Bowl of Wrath

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon (AX)the air, and a (AY)loud voice came out of the [k](AZ)temple from the throne, saying, “(BA)It is done.” 18 And there were flashes of (BB)lightning and sounds and peals of thunder; and there was (BC)a great earthquake, (BD)such as there had not been since man came to be upon the earth, so great an earthquake was it, and so mighty. 19 (BE)The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the [l]nations fell. (BF)Babylon the great was (BG)remembered before God, to give her (BH)the cup of the wine of [m]His fierce wrath. 20 And (BI)every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And (BJ)huge [n]hailstones, about [o]one hundred pounds each, *came down from heaven upon men; and men (BK)blasphemed God because of the (BL)plague of the hail, because its plague *was extremely [p]severe.
