14 »El hombre, nacido de mujer,
Corto de días y lleno de tormentos(A),
2 Como una flor brota y se marchita(B),
Y como una sombra huye y no permanece(C).
3 -»Sobre él ciertamente abres Tus ojos(D),
Y lo[a] traes a juicio contigo(E).
4 -»¿Quién hará algo limpio de lo inmundo(F)?
¡Nadie!
5 -»Ya que sus días están determinados,
El número de sus meses(G) te es conocido[b],
Y has fijado[c] sus límites para que no pueda pasarlos.
6 -»Aparta de él Tu mirada para que descanse[d](H),
Hasta que cumpla[e] su día como jornalero.
7 ¶»Porque hay esperanza para un árbol
Cuando es cortado, que volverá a retoñar,
Y sus renuevos no le faltarán[f].
8 -»Aunque envejezcan sus raíces en la tierra,
Y muera su tronco en el polvo,
9 Al olor del agua reverdecerá
Y como una planta joven echará renuevos.
10 -»(I)Pero el hombre muere y yace inerte.
El hombre(J) expira, ¿y dónde está?
11 -»Como las aguas se evaporan[g] del mar,
Como un río se agota y se seca(K),
12 Así el hombre se acuesta y no se levanta;
Hasta que los cielos ya no existan,
No se despertará[h] ni se levantará[i] de su sueño(L).
13 ¶»¡Oh, si me escondieras en el Seol[j],
Si me ocultaras hasta que Tu ira se pasara[k](M),
Si me pusieras un plazo y de mí te acordaras!
14 -»Si el hombre muere, ¿volverá a vivir?
Todos los días de mi batallar esperaré
Hasta que llegue mi relevo.
15 -»Tú llamarás, y yo te responderé;
Anhelarás la obra de Tus manos(N).
16 -»Porque ahora cuentas mis pasos(O),
No observas mi pecado(P).
17 -»Sellada está en un saco mi transgresión(Q),
Y tienes cubierta[l] mi iniquidad.
18 ¶»Pero el monte que cae se desmorona[m],
Y se cambia la roca de su lugar;
19 El agua desgasta las piedras,
Sus torrentes se llevan el polvo de la tierra;
Así destruyes Tú la esperanza del hombre(R).
20 -»Prevaleces para siempre contra él, y se va(S);
Cambias su apariencia, y lo despides.
21 -»Alcanzan honra sus hijos, pero él no lo sabe;
O son humillados, pero él no lo percibe(T).
22 -»Pero su cuerpo[n] le da dolores,
Y se lamenta solo por sí mismo».

14 »Pocos son los días y muchos los problemas,
que vive el hombre nacido de mujer.
2 Es como las flores que brotan y se marchitan;
es como efímera sombra que se esfuma.
3 ¿Y en alguien así has puesto los ojos?
¿Con alguien como yo entrarás en juicio?
4 ¿Quién de la inmundicia puede sacar pureza?
¡No hay nadie que pueda hacerlo!
5 Los días del hombre ya están determinados;
tú has establecido los meses de su vida;
le has puesto límites que no puede rebasar.
6 Aparta de él la mirada y déjalo en paz;
como al jornalero, déjalo disfrutar de su trabajo.
7 »Si se derriba un árbol,
queda al menos la esperanza de que retoñe
y de que no se marchiten sus renuevos.
8 Tal vez sus raíces envejezcan en la tierra
y su tronco muera en su terreno,
9 pero al sentir el agua, florecerá;
echará ramas como árbol recién plantado.
10 El hombre, en cambio, muere y pierde su fuerza;
exhala el último suspiro y deja de existir.
11 Como del mar se evapora el agua
y los ríos se agotan y se secan,
12 así los mortales, cuando se acuestan,
no se vuelven a levantar.
Mientras exista el cielo,
no se levantarán los mortales
ni se despertarán de su sueño.
13 »¡Si al menos me ocultaras en el sepulcro[a]
y me escondieras hasta que pase tu enojo!
¡Si al menos me pusieras un plazo allí
y luego me recordaras!
14 Pero si alguien muere, ¿acaso volverá a vivir?
Cada día de mi servicio obligatorio
esperaré que llegue mi relevo.
15 Tú me llamarás, y yo te responderé;
desearás ver la obra de tus manos.
16 Desearás también contar mis pasos,
pero no tomarás en cuenta mi pecado.
17 En saco sellado guardarás mis transgresiones
y perdonarás del todo mi pecado.
18 »Pero así como un monte se erosiona y se derrumba
y las piedras cambian de lugar;
19 así como las aguas desgastan las rocas
y los torrentes erosionan el suelo,
así tú pones fin a la esperanza del hombre.
20 Lo apabullas del todo y él desaparece;
lo desfiguras y entonces lo despides.
21 Si sus hijos reciben honores, él no lo sabe;
si se les humilla, él no se da cuenta.
22 Solo siente el dolor de su propio cuerpo
y solo de sí mismo se conduele».

14 Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.
2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
3 And doth thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
5 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
6 Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.
7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
13 O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
15 Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
16 For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?
17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.
18 And surely the mountains falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.
19 The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.
20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
21 His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
22 But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
