La sabiduría divina descubre la culpa
11 Sofar de Naamat contestó así:
2 ¿Quedará sin respuesta tanta palabrería
y tendrá razón un charlatán?
3 ¿Hará callar a otros tu verborrea
y te burlarás sin que nadie te contradiga?
4 Tú has dicho: “Mi conducta es limpia,
nada malo me puedes reprochar”.
5 Pero ojalá Dios te hablase,
abriese la boca para responderte:
6 te enseñaría secretos de sabiduría,
que son prodigios de habilidad.
Entonces acabarías sabiendo
que aún te perdona parte de tu culpa.
7 ¿Puedes sondear la profundidad de Dios,
descubrir la perfección del Todopoderoso?
8 Es más alta que el cielo: ¿qué harás?
Más honda que el reino de los muertos:
¿qué podrás saber tú?
9 Es más larga que la tierra
y más ancha que el mar.
10 Si se presenta y encierra en prisión,
si cita a juicio, ¿quién lo impedirá?
11 Pues conoce a quienes nada valen,
cuando ve la maldad se fija bien.
12 Y es que el necio se hará sensato
cuando un asno salvaje se haga manso.
13 Pero si no vacila tu mente,
si extiendes las manos hacia él,
14 si apartas tu mano de la maldad
y no alojas en tu tienda la injusticia,
15 podrás alzar la frente sin mancilla;
te acosarán, pero no tendrás miedo;
16 podrás olvidar tu infortunio,
recordándolo como agua que pasó.
17 Tu vida será más luminosa que el mediodía,
tus tinieblas serán como un amanecer;
18 vivirás seguro y con esperanza,
te sentirás protegido, dormirás tranquilo;
19 descansarás libre de sobresaltos
y muchos buscarán tu favor.
20 Pero los ojos del malvado se apagan,
no podrá encontrar un refugio,
su esperanza es sólo un suspiro.

Primer discurso de Zofar
11 A esto respondió Zofar de Namat:
2 «¿Quedará sin respuesta toda esta palabrería?
¿Resultará inocente este hablador?
3 ¿Todo ese discurso nos dejará callados?
¿Te burlarás sin que nadie te reprenda?
4 Tú afirmas: “Mi postura es la correcta;
soy puro a los ojos de Dios”.
5 ¡Cómo me gustaría que Dios interviniera
y abriera sus labios contra ti
6 para mostrarte los secretos de la sabiduría,
pues esta tiene dos lados![a]
Sabrías entonces que buena parte de tu pecado
Dios no lo ha tomado en cuenta.
7 »¿Puedes adentrarte en los misterios de Dios
o alcanzar la perfección[b] del Todopoderoso?
8 Son más altos que los cielos;
¿qué puedes hacer?
Son más profundos que el abismo;[c]
¿qué puedes saber?
9 Son más extensos que toda la tierra;
¡son más anchos que todo el mar!
10 »Si viene y te pone en un calabozo,
y luego te llama a cuentas,
¿quién lo hará desistir?
11 Bien conoce Dios a la gente sin escrúpulos;
cuando percibe el mal, no lo pasa por alto.
12 ¡El necio llegará a ser sabio
cuando de un asno salvaje nazca un hombre![d]
13 »Pero si le entregas tu corazón
y hacia él extiendes las manos,
14 si te apartas del pecado que has cometido
y en tu morada no das cabida al mal,
15 entonces podrás llevar la frente en alto
y mantenerte firme y libre de temor.
16 Ciertamente olvidarás tus pesares
o los recordarás como el agua que pasó.
17 Tu vida será más radiante que el sol de mediodía
y la oscuridad será como el amanecer.
18 Vivirás tranquilo, porque hay esperanza;
estarás protegido[e] y dormirás confiado.
19 Descansarás sin temer a nadie
y muchos querrán ganarse tu favor.
20 Pero los ojos de los malvados se apagarán;
no tendrán escapatoria.
¡Su esperanza es exhalar el último suspiro!».

11 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
2 Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?
3 Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?
4 For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.
5 But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;
6 And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.
7 Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?
9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
10 If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?
11 For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?
12 For vain men would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.
13 If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;
14 If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.
15 For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:
16 Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:
17 And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday: thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.
18 And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.
19 Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
20 But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.

11 Then Zophar the Naamathite(A) replied:
2 “Are all these words to go unanswered?(B)
Is this talker to be vindicated?(C)
3 Will your idle talk(D) reduce others to silence?
Will no one rebuke you when you mock?(E)
4 You say to God, ‘My beliefs are flawless(F)
and I am pure(G) in your sight.’
5 Oh, how I wish that God would speak,(H)
that he would open his lips against you
6 and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom,(I)
for true wisdom has two sides.
Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin.(J)
7 “Can you fathom(K) the mysteries of God?
Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?
8 They are higher(L) than the heavens(M) above—what can you do?
They are deeper than the depths below(N)—what can you know?(O)
9 Their measure(P) is longer than the earth
and wider than the sea.(Q)
10 “If he comes along and confines you in prison
and convenes a court, who can oppose him?(R)
11 Surely he recognizes deceivers;
and when he sees evil, does he not take note?(S)
12 But the witless can no more become wise
than a wild donkey’s colt(T) can be born human.[a](U)
13 “Yet if you devote your heart(V) to him
and stretch out your hands(W) to him,(X)
14 if you put away(Y) the sin that is in your hand
and allow no evil(Z) to dwell in your tent,(AA)
15 then, free of fault, you will lift up your face;(AB)
you will stand firm(AC) and without fear.(AD)
16 You will surely forget your trouble,(AE)
recalling it only as waters gone by.(AF)
17 Life will be brighter than noonday,(AG)
and darkness will become like morning.(AH)
18 You will be secure, because there is hope;
you will look about you and take your rest(AI) in safety.(AJ)
19 You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid,(AK)
and many will court your favor.(AL)
20 But the eyes of the wicked will fail,(AM)
and escape will elude them;(AN)
their hope will become a dying gasp.”(AO)
