11 ¶ Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered and said,

Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be justified?

Should thy lies make men be silent? Shalt thou mock, and shall no man make thee ashamed?

For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean before thine eyes.

But oh, that God would speak and open his lips against thee

and that he would show thee the secrets of wisdom! For thou dost deserve double according to sound wisdom; and thou dost know that God has forgotten thee because of thine iniquity.

¶ Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou come unto the perfection of the Almighty?

It is higher than the heavens; what canst thou do? It is deeper than Sheol; how canst thou know it?

The measure of it is longer than the earth and broader than the sea.

10 If he cuts off, or shuts up, or gathers together, then who can hinder him?

11 For he knows the vain men; and he sees the iniquity; will he not then understand it?

12 The vain man shall make himself understood, though man is born like a wild ass’s colt.

13 ¶ If thou would prepare thine heart and stretch out thine hands toward him;

14 if there is any iniquity in thy hand and thou dost put it far away and dost not consent that wickedness dwell in thy habitations,

15 then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; thou shalt be strongly established and shalt not fear;

16 and thou shalt forget thy misery and remember it as waters that passed away;

17 and thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.

18 And thou shalt trust because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig and sleep in safety;

19 thou shalt lie down, and no one shall make thee afraid; and many shall make requests unto thee.

20 But the eyes of the wicked shall consume themselves, and they shall have no refuge, and their hope shall be agony of the soul.

11 Zophar the Naamathite replies to Job:

“Shouldn’t someone stem this torrent of words? Is a man proved right by all this talk? Should I remain silent while you boast? When you mock God, shouldn’t someone make you ashamed? You claim you are pure in the eyes of God! Oh, that God would speak and tell you what he thinks! Oh, that he would make you truly see yourself, for he knows everything you’ve done. Listen! God is doubtless punishing you far less than you deserve!

“Do you know the mind and purposes of God? Will long searching make them known to you? Are you qualified to judge the Almighty? He is as faultless as heaven is high—but who are you? His mind is fathomless—what can you know in comparison? His Spirit is broader than the earth and wider than the sea. 10 If he rushes in and makes an arrest, and calls the court to order, who is going to stop him? 11 For he knows perfectly all the faults and sins of mankind; he sees all sin without searching.

12 “Mere man is as likely to be wise as a wild donkey’s colt is likely to be born a man!

13-14 “Before you turn to God and stretch out your hands to him, get rid of your sins and leave all iniquity behind you. 15 Only then, without the spots of sin to defile you, can you walk steadily forward to God without fear. 16 Only then can you forget your misery. It will all be in the past. 17 And your life will be cloudless; any darkness will be as bright as morning!

18 “You will have courage because you will have hope. You will take your time and rest in safety. 19 You will lie down unafraid, and many will look to you for help. 20 But the wicked shall find no way to escape; their only hope is death.”

Zophar

11 Then Zophar the Naamathite(A) replied:

“Are all these words to go unanswered?(B)
    Is this talker to be vindicated?(C)
Will your idle talk(D) reduce others to silence?
    Will no one rebuke you when you mock?(E)
You say to God, ‘My beliefs are flawless(F)
    and I am pure(G) in your sight.’
Oh, how I wish that God would speak,(H)
    that he would open his lips against you
and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom,(I)
    for true wisdom has two sides.
    Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin.(J)

“Can you fathom(K) the mysteries of God?
    Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?
They are higher(L) than the heavens(M) above—what can you do?
    They are deeper than the depths below(N)—what can you know?(O)
Their measure(P) is longer than the earth
    and wider than the sea.(Q)

10 “If he comes along and confines you in prison
    and convenes a court, who can oppose him?(R)
11 Surely he recognizes deceivers;
    and when he sees evil, does he not take note?(S)
12 But the witless can no more become wise
    than a wild donkey’s colt(T) can be born human.[a](U)

13 “Yet if you devote your heart(V) to him
    and stretch out your hands(W) to him,(X)
14 if you put away(Y) the sin that is in your hand
    and allow no evil(Z) to dwell in your tent,(AA)
15 then, free of fault, you will lift up your face;(AB)
    you will stand firm(AC) and without fear.(AD)
16 You will surely forget your trouble,(AE)
    recalling it only as waters gone by.(AF)
17 Life will be brighter than noonday,(AG)
    and darkness will become like morning.(AH)
18 You will be secure, because there is hope;
    you will look about you and take your rest(AI) in safety.(AJ)
19 You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid,(AK)
    and many will court your favor.(AL)
20 But the eyes of the wicked will fail,(AM)
    and escape will elude them;(AN)
    their hope will become a dying gasp.”(AO)
