De dienaar van God die komt redden

61 Jesaja zegt: De Geest van de Heer is op mij.[a] Hij heeft mij met zijn Geest gezalfd om goed nieuws te brengen aan nederige mensen. Hij heeft mij gestuurd om mensen die een gebroken hart hebben, te genezen. Om gevangenen te vertellen dat ze vrij zijn. Om mensen die vastzitten, uit hun gevangenis te halen. 2 Om te vertellen dat het grote feestjaar van de Heer begonnen is. Om te zeggen dat de dag is gekomen dat onze God zijn vijanden zal straffen. Om alle mensen die verdrietig zijn, te troosten. 3 Om alle mensen in Jeruzalem die treuren, weer blij te maken. Ze zullen geen as meer op hun hoofd hebben als teken van verdriet, maar een feestkroon. Ze zullen niet meer gebukt gaan onder verdriet, maar ze zullen blij zijn en feestvieren. Ze zullen worden genoemd: 'Eiken van rechtvaardigheid,' en: 'Bomen door de Heer geplant'. Zo zal Hij worden geëerd.

4 Ze zullen de oude puinhopen weer opbouwen tot steden. Wat vroeger werd verwoest, zullen ze weer opbouwen. Ze zullen de steden die in puin liggen, vernieuwen. Zelfs steden die eeuwenlang verwoest hebben gelegen, worden weer opgebouwd. 5 Vreemdelingen zullen klaarstaan om voor jullie te werken. Ze zullen jullie vee voor jullie hoeden en op jullie akkers en in de wijngaarden werken. 6 Maar jullie zullen priesters van de Heer worden genoemd, en dienaren van onze God. Jullie zullen leven van de rijkdommen die de volken hebben verzameld. Daarvan zullen jullie genieten. 7 Eerst stonden jullie verschrikkelijk te schande. Maar dat zal jullie dubbel worden vergoed. Eerst werden jullie uitgelachen. Maar dan zullen jullie juichen over de buit. Jullie zullen alles dubbel vergoed krijgen en voor altijd blij zijn.

8 De Heer zegt: "Want Ik houd van rechtvaardigheid. Ik haat beroving en Ik haat het kwaad. Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat mijn volk precies krijgt waar het recht op heeft. Ik zal een eeuwig verbond met hen sluiten. 9 Hun familie ná hen zal bekend zijn onder de andere volken en landen. Iedereen die hen ziet, zal moeten toegeven dat de Heer met hen is."

10 Jeruzalem zegt: "Ik ben heel erg blij met de Heer. Ik juich over wie God is. Want Hij heeft mij gered. Hij is voor mij opgekomen. Daardoor ben ik nu net zo mooi als een bruidegom in zijn feestkleren, of als een bruid met al haar sieraden om. 11 De Heer zal ervoor zorgen dat de volken rechtvaardig worden en Hem zullen prijzen. Dat is net zo zeker als dat er planten uit de aarde groeien en er zaden ontkiemen in een tuin. Alle volken zullen zien hoe geweldig Hij is. Ze zullen Hem prijzen."

Vreugde in plaats van rouw

61 De Geest van God de Here rust op mij, omdat de Here mij heeft gezalfd tot brenger van goed nieuws aan mensen die lijden en worden onderdrukt. Hij heeft mij gestuurd om mensen met gebroken harten te troosten, voor gevangenen vrijlating uit te roepen en hen die opgesloten zitten, te bevrijden. 2 Hij heeft mij gestuurd om aan mensen in de rouw te vertellen dat de tijd van Gods genade voor hen is gekomen, maar ook de dag van zijn toorn tegen hun vijanden. 3 Aan allen die in Israël rouwen, geeft Hij schoonheid in plaats van as, vreugde in plaats van rouw, lof in plaats van neerslachtigheid. Want God heeft hen geplant als sterke en rechtvaardige eiken ter wille van zijn eigen glorie.

4 Zij zullen de oude ruïnes herbouwen, steden restaureren die lang geleden werden verwoest en deze opnieuw tot leven brengen, ook al hebben zij vele generaties lang in puin gelegen. 5 Buitenlanders zullen uw dienaars zijn, zij zullen uw kudden voederen, uw land ploegen en uw wijngaarden verzorgen. 6 U zult priesters van de Here, helpers van onze God, worden genoemd. U zult worden gevoed met de rijkdommen van de volken en u zult u op hun schatten beroemen. 7 In plaats van schaamte en schande zult u een dubbele hoeveelheid voorspoed en eeuwige vreugde krijgen. 8 Want Ik, de Here, houd van gerechtigheid, Ik haat roof en het kwaad. Ik zal mijn volk trouw belonen en een eeuwigdurend verbond met hen sluiten. 9 Hun nakomelingen zullen bekend en beroemd zijn onder de volken, iedereen zal beseffen dat zij een volk vormen dat door God is gezegend.

10 Laat mij u vertellen hoe gelukkig God mij heeft gemaakt! Want Hij heeft mij gekleed in gewaden van heil en een mantel van gerechtigheid over mijn schouder gelegd. Ik lijk wel een bruidegom in zijn trouwpak of een bruid met haar sieraden. 11 God de Here zal de volken van de wereld zijn gerechtigheid laten zien, allen zullen Hem loven. Als een bloeiende boom of als een tuin, vroeg in de lente, vol met jonge planten die overal opschieten, zo zal God, de Here, gerechtigheid doen voortkomen onder alle volken.

The Lord Will Rejuvenate His People

61 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me,
because the Lord has chosen[a] me.[b]
He has commissioned[c] me to encourage[d] the poor,
to help[e] the brokenhearted,
to decree the release of captives,
and the freeing of prisoners,
2 to announce the year when the Lord will show his favor,
the day when our God will seek vengeance,[f]
to console all who mourn,
3 to strengthen those who mourn in Zion,
by giving them a turban, instead of ashes,
oil symbolizing joy,[g] instead of mourning,
a garment symbolizing praise,[h] instead of discouragement.[i]
They will be called oaks of righteousness,[j]
trees planted by the Lord to reveal his splendor.[k]
4 They will rebuild the perpetual ruins
and restore the places that were desolate;[l]
they will reestablish the ruined cities,
the places that have been desolate since ancient times.
5 [m] “Foreigners will take care of[n] your sheep;
foreigners will work in your fields and vineyards.
6 You will be called, ‘the Lord’s priests,
servants of our God.’[o]
You will enjoy[p] the wealth of nations
and boast about[q] the riches you receive from them.[r]
7 Instead of shame, you will get a double portion;[s]
instead of humiliation, they will rejoice over the land they receive.[t]
Yes,[u] they will possess a double portion in their land
and experience lasting joy.
8 For I, the Lord, love justice
and hate robbery and sin.
I will repay them because of my faithfulness;[v]
I will make a permanent covenant with them.
9 Their descendants will be known among the nations,
their offspring among the peoples.
All who see them will recognize that
the Lord has blessed them.”[w]
10 I[x] will greatly rejoice[y] in the Lord;
I will be overjoyed because of my God.[z]
For he clothes me in garments of deliverance;
he puts on me a robe symbolizing vindication.[aa]
I look like a bridegroom when he wears a turban as a priest would;
I look like a bride when she puts on her jewelry.[ab]
11 For just as the ground produces its crops
and a garden yields its produce,
so the Sovereign Lord will cause deliverance[ac] to grow,
and give his people reason to praise him in the sight of all the nations.[ad]

The Year of the Lord’s Favor

61 The Spirit(A) of the Sovereign Lord(B) is on me,
    because the Lord has anointed(C) me
    to proclaim good news(D) to the poor.(E)
He has sent me to bind up(F) the brokenhearted,
    to proclaim freedom(G) for the captives(H)
    and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a]
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor(I)
    and the day of vengeance(J) of our God,
to comfort(K) all who mourn,(L)
3     and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown(M) of beauty
    instead of ashes,(N)
the oil(O) of joy
    instead of mourning,(P)
and a garment of praise
    instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
    a planting(Q) of the Lord
    for the display of his splendor.(R)

4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins(S)
    and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
    that have been devastated for generations.
5 Strangers(T) will shepherd your flocks;
    foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.
6 And you will be called priests(U) of the Lord,
    you will be named ministers of our God.
You will feed on the wealth(V) of nations,
    and in their riches you will boast.

7 Instead of your shame(W)

and instead of disgrace
    you will rejoice in your inheritance.

10 I delight greatly in the Lord;
    my soul rejoices(AE) in my God.
For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
    and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,(AF)
as a bridegroom adorns his head(AG) like a priest,

11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up
    and a garden(AI) causes seeds to grow,
so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness(AJ)
